Derek's weekend weather: sunshine and showers

Derek Brockway

Yesterday torrential rain caused flash flooding in parts of Wales. Thankfully, today is much drier and brighter with some blue sky and sunshine but the air is unstable with a few towering clouds and a scattering of heavy showers as well.

A few of you have spotted rainbows today and even double rainbows like this one by Sadye Baker:

Rainbows are beautiful but if you are wondering how they are they formed, you can find out more here.

If you are lucky, you may see a rainbow over the weekend with more sunshine and showers in the forecast. The showers will be hit and miss but if you catch one it could be heavy with hail and thunder possible. However some places will stay dry, especially on Sunday.

Temperatures will be on the cool side 10 to 13 Celsius and it will be chilly at night with ground frost and some air frost in rural spots by Sunday morning. A few mist and fog patches are likely as well.

If you're watching or taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday morning, the weather should be in good shape and ideal for the runners.

Next week is the 25th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987 which left a trail of devastation. Michael Fish will never forget the Great Storm - it made him famous!

Also next week, the changeable weather looks set to continue with further spells of wet and windy weather but with some sunshine in between.
