Several days of fine and settled weather

It's fair to say that, although not perfect, this summer so far has been better than last year. And that shows up in the figures for June.

According to the Met Office it was slightly cooler than average in Wales with a mean temperature of 12.8°C which is the same as June 2012 (the long term average is 13.2°C).

But unlike June last year, which was the dullest since 1997, it was sunnier than normal with 200 hours of sunshine.

June was also drier than normal too with only 56.8mm of rain compared to the long term average of 85.8mm. The exact opposite of June 2012 which was the wettest for 100 years!

Low pressure has brought us wind and rain today but there is a big change on the way. The jet stream which will be over the UK on Wednesday will move north by the end of the week, allowing high pressure from the Azores to build northeast into the UK.

Forecast chart from the Met Office

This will bring a big improvement in the weather by Friday and over the weekend with a good deal of sunshine and it will gradually becoming warmer too.

Normally we can only forecast about five days ahead and even that can be difficult sometimes given the chaotic nature of the atmosphere. But the various computer models around the world that help us predict the weather are all consistent in keeping high pressure over or close to the UK well into next week.

This increases confidence that we are in for several days of fine and settled weather. Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to high 20s next week.

A few places could even hit 30° Celsius, 86° Fahrenheit, making it the best spell of July weather we've had since 2006 when the temperature in Penhow in Monmouthshire soared to a record high of 34.2°C!
