This week's show is still available via the BBC iPlayer. Please visit the link below any time between now and the start of the next programme.
There's a tonne of magic and wonder in a remarkable piece of music, sure, but I think what sets a great song – and a great songwriter – apart is brilliant, sharp, insightful, evocative and original lyrics.
Admittedly there are many fine-ish songs with dawdly, cliched lyrics that sleepwalk through the rock 'n' roll lexicon – fire, desire, higher... yawn – but, for me, a great song has to, as a prerequisite, have a great lyric.
But where do great lyrics come from? Is it an innate verbal aptitude, something that is prompted by leading an interesting life? Or is it about having a fine eye and an acute ear for other people's interesting lives? Or is it a combination of all of these things, and probably many more besides?
One of the finest UK lyricists of the past two decades is Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine's frontman Jim Bob. He's now also an acclaimed author and released an excellent new solo album in September.
On this week's show Jim Bob offers us his illuminating Words of Wisdom on the songwriting process.
Elsewhere in the show Ben 'Soundhog' Hayes brings in some Doctor and the Medics and talks about the mid '80s UK psych revival, and we have debut plays (and fine lyrics) from The Rifts, Cave Story, Burning Ferns, The Barry Massive, Shoot the Rabbit, Lloyd Best, Wired to Follow and Bloom.
