April showers return as temperatures drop

Wales has been basking in warmth and sunshine this week. Porthmadog in Gwynedd was our hotspot at 21°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As the weekend arrives, this warm spell comes to an end. We're in for more typical April weather - showers and sunny spells. It will also feel cooler and breezier.

Friday afternoon will be drier further east, but much cloudier with some mist patches. A band of patchy rain is due to spread in from the south-west with light south-westerly winds which will lower temperatures to 12-15°C.

That rain moves north-eastwards Friday night and will eventually clear overnight with a few mist and fog patches forming. Cloudy skies will hold up the temperatures overnight, so feeling quite a mild night at 6-11°C.

It won't be too chilly a start on Saturday with some mist and cloud around. There will be plenty of dry, bright weather too, but also a few showers. There will be a greater chance of showers in the afternoon in the south and as a weak front moves into north-west Wales. It will turn slightly cooler and breezier at 9-14°C.

On Saturday night into Sunday, that cold front will sink south-eastwards across Wales with some rain and colder air following behind.

There will be some early rain on Sunday in the south, but that will clear south-eastwards to sunshine and just a few showers. We expect drier and brighter weather following from the north, but also brisk winds mean it will turn colder - cold enough for snow in the Cambrian mountains and Snowdonia! Temperatures will lower to 8-12°C in towns and cities.

Pressure will build later on Sunday to allow a clearer, colder night. There may be some frost early on Monday morning with a drier and brighter day following, but also colder.

So it will be quite a mixed weekend with lots of sunny spells and April showers. Monday is looking more settled but this will change through the rest of next week.

After a very warm and dry start to April, it's looking changeable, breezy and cooler for the rest of the month.
