A cold front moving south east on Thursday

Derek Brockway

Yesterday Usk in Monmouthshire was the warmest place in Wales with a high of 18 Celsius.

It was cooler on the south and west coast though; 11 Celsius in Pembrey and on Bardsey Island with the sea surface temperature only 8 Celsius.

Today moist south-westerly winds are bringing low cloud, patches of light rain, drizzle, mist, hill and coastal fog but there is a change on the way.

A cold front will move south east tomorrow and introduce much clearer and fresher air.

Friday and the weekend will be cool but bright with a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers.

The showers will be heavy in places with a risk of thunder and hail. The showers will also be wintry on the mountains with a little snow.

The nights will be colder than recently too with ground frost and rural air frost.

After a sunny start to Sunday cloud will increase with spots of light rain spreading from the north west during the afternoon and evening.

The first half of April was colder and drier than average in Wales. Since then, we have enjoyed a few warm days but April is set to end on a chilly and unsettled note.

May will more than likely start on the cool side as well but a few computer models are showing a trend towards higher pressure after May 3, bringing drier and warmer weather. How long this improvement will last remains to be seen…
