A short-lived cold snap

We've had just about everything thrown at us today: rain, sleet, hail, thunder and some snow. In fact in Llandrindod, which is over 900 feet above sea level, a light cover of snow fell.

The cold snap is going to be short-lived. It will turn milder again tomorrow with more heavy rain and gales on the way! Some rivers are already swollen with several flood alerts in force.

This evening and tonight will be dry apart from a few passing showers. These falling as snow on higher ground in the south including the Brecon Beacons.

Temperatures inland will fall close to freezing with some frost and the Met Office has issued a warning of icy patches on untreated roads.

Tomorrow's chart shows low pressure over the Atlantic with fronts heading our way.

Tomorrow will start off chilly with some frost and icy patches inland. The odd fog patch as well. In the south and west, heavy showers are likely in places in the morning and it will be breezy and milder on the coast.

There will be some dry weather tomorrow and a little sunshine but the next batch of rain will spread across the country during the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise as high as 10 or 11°C and the wind will increase again as well, becoming strong with gales developing. Gusts 45-50mph inland, 60-70mph on exposed coasts and hills in the south and west and northwest later in the afternoon.

A heavy rain warning is in force from Friday afternoon and into Saturday. Another 10-20mm is likely, 40mm on high ground with a risk of flooding in places. So wet and windy tomorrow evening, but after midnight the heavy rain should clear away with temperatures staying well above freezing.

Over the weekend, there will be some dry, bright weather and sunshine but further rain and showers at times as well. Sunday will be a little colder with the showers turning wintry on higher ground.

Next week, it looks like there’s more heavy rain and gales on Monday - not ideal for travelling before Christmas!
