January's a strange, torpid, wasteland of a month, generally speaking.
In the olden days this was because the music industry spent the majority of the opening month sunning themselves on lilos stitched together from their charges' souls, floating in swimming pools filled with the tears of a billion exploited songwriters, in secret Caribbean resorts, built out of pure money hardened to diamond by the unrelenting grasp of unscrupulous, satanic MDs.
Sadly that industry is now no more than a stale whisper on a Syco fart.
But January still tends to be a little quiet. Who knew that turkey digestion (or, for me, the Quorn equivalent) could so slow and hinder original music production?
Maybe it's due to cracker-explosion-related tinnitus?
Or reindeer allergies fuzzing up larynxes?
Or the fact that the magnanimous festival that's supposed to celebrate the baby Jesus and his upcoming altruistic philosophies, in actuality wheedles and bleeds every spare penny out of peoples' pockets, so that they've barely enough left to afford a sprout let alone a ticket for a gig or a music download.
Or maybe it's because it's a bit parky?
As in 'cold', not 'silver fox chatshow host'.
ANYWAY... 2014 appears to be Buckaroo-ing the trend, as if a cabal of fascinating Welsh musicians have all snuck up on a jittery plastic horse and placed great new sounds over its saddle while it was being distracted by an oncoming lorry advertising a certain supermarket's value lasagnes.
This week's show flings debut plays for Spencer Segelov, Personal Best, Tom Ap Dan, Boys At Heart, The Starling Radicals, Dan Joseph Jones, Karedig and The Paisley Vale all over the carpet - as well as ludicrously excellent new songs from Elly Sinnett and... well, let's just leave it at that, for now.
I open the programme with Elly Sinnett's Luna Eyes, the title track for her debut EP proper. I waxed lyrical about this song a few months back on the BBC music blogs. I wax more lyrical now. So waxy and so lyrical that it's like someone turned Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Morrissey into scented candles: sandalwood, apple and pine, and bitterness, respectively.
Please send new releases, demos, gig info and well-polished apples to: themysterytour@gmail.com or via the BBC Introducing Uploader.
Elsewhere on the show, the estimable Alan Holmes - godfather of the Welsh underground, so don't mess him about - talks about Cousin Silas, and Ben 'Soundhog' Hayes gets well jiggy with The Barron Knights.
I talk too much. What's new?
