A taste of summer

British summer time started yesterday and many parts of Wales enjoyed a taste of summer.

Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far with a top temperature of 20.7°C recorded at Porthmadog in Gwynedd. Not quite a record for March but warmer than Majorca and well above the average of 10°C.

The highest temperature recorded in Wales in March was 23.9°C at Prestatyn in Denbighshire and Ceinws in Powys on 29 March 1965.

Some of you have also been in touch on Twitter recently telling me that your car is covered in a strange yellow dust.

The dust is actually sand which has come all the way from the Sahara, blown our way by winds high in the atmosphere. This does happen from time to time when the wind is from the south - a bit of a nuisance but it's completely harmless, although it can affect air quality.

Watch a clip explaining the mysterious yellow dust.

More dust from the Sahara may be washed out of the sky by rain and showers over the next few days.

According to the Met Office, March 2014 has been drier, warmer and sunnier than average, a welcome boost after such a wet winter.

The first few days of April will bring more warm weather but also some rain and showers which may be heavy and thundery in places and by Friday it will feel cooler with daytime temperatures 11 to 14°C.
