Typical Welsh winter weather

Moist south-westerly winds are bringing plenty of low cloud, rain and drizzle to Wales today. However it’s much drier and even a little brighter in the rain shadow of the north-east. It's also very mild here with temperatures in Flintshire reaching 14° Celsius, 6 degrees above average and more like May than December!

There is more rain, drizzle and hill fog to come today and tonight. This will be heaviest on high ground. The Cambrian Mountains, Brecon Beacons and Heads of the Valleys have a weather warning in force until 6am tomorrow. The heavy rain is accompanied by a strong to gale force wind with a risk of flooding in places - see Natural Resources Wales for details.

Tonight a cold front will move south-east and the heavy rain will clear later in the night. The wind will ease and temperatures will drop once the rain clears.

Weather chart 19 December

Tomorrow promises to be a much better day - much drier and brighter with sunshine and a few showers in the north and west. Temperatures will be lower than today and will reach a seasonal 6 to 9° Celsius with a chilly west to north-westerly breeze. The air will be much clearer too with good visibility.

Saturday will be a bright and breezy day with some sunshine and apart from one or two showers it will be largely dry. The brisk wind will ease during the afternoon with highs of 7 to 9° Celsius.

On Sunday it will be much cloudier and windier with a little rain and drizzle on high ground. Parts of the east and north-east will be drier and brighter. It will turn milder again with a fresh to strong south-westerly wind, with top temperatures reaching 10 to 13° Celsius.

Next week will start mild and windy with some rain and drizzle, but over Christmas the signs are it will turn clearer and colder again with some sunshine, a little frost and a few showers. A white Christmas looks unlikely at this stage, although I wouldn’t rule out a dusting of snow on Snowdon.
