A short taste of summer

Usk in Monmouthshire was the warmest place in Wales yesterday with a top temperature of 19.8°C. Mind you, the nights have been cool this week, especially in land. In Bala in Gwynedd the temperature dropped to 1.9°C on Tuesday night with a ground frost.

While last night, with its clear sky, there was a stunning full moon.

The reason for the settled weather is high pressure but it's not sunny everywhere today. Cloud in the north was thick enough for a few spots of rain this morning.

Tomorrow should be sunnier in the north and warmer too. In the north-east, in the Wrexham area and Flintshire, the temperature could well reach 22°C making it the warmest day of the year so far.

Forecast chart Friday 16 May 2014.

Saturday looks set to be the best day of the weekend; sunny and warm with top temperatures between 19 and 22°C, but a little cooler on some coasts with refreshing sea breezes. The sea temperature is currently around 12°C around the Welsh coast.

Sunday will bring more dry weather. The best of the hazy sunshine is likely in the southeast in the morning but during the day cloud will gradually increase and thicken from the west. One or two light showers may break out during the afternoon, while a cold front may bring some rain to Anglesey, north-west Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire.

Forecast chart Sunday 18 May 2014.

Temperatures on Sunday afternoon will range from around 14°C in Haverfordwest to 18°C in Llangollen with a light to moderate south to south-westerly breeze.

Next week, it looks set to turn more unsettled with low pressure bringing showers and some rain at times. The rain may be heavy and thundery but with some drier, brighter interludes in between.
