Red warning of wind

There's plenty of severe weather across Wales today with heavy rain and strong winds.

We've already had gusts of 78mph at Pembrey and 75mph at Aberdaron and Milford Haven.

The winds will strengthen to the north and west this afternoon where we could see gusts nearer 100mph along Cardigan Bay and the Llyn peninsula.

Most of Wales is currently covered by an amber warning for strong winds but the Met Office has issued a red 'take action' warning for the north and west Wales coast.

That's the highest level they can issue and these winds are capable of bringing down trees and power lines as well as causing cause structural damage and travel disruption.

So, this afternoon we'll have heavy rain on and off with another 20-30mm likely with some hail clearing to showers later.

Gale force winds will however persist, especially along exposed coasts but it will be getting drier later.

It could be wintry on higher ground (above 200m) for parts of north and mid Wales with top temperatures hovering between 7-9°C.

This evening the strong winds will persist in the north and west but they will slowly ease. With clear spells and a few scattered showers we could see some snow for higher communities as temperatures fall to around freezing.

Thursday will feel colder with icy patches and a mixture of sunshine, showers and hail. It will remain wintry on higher ground and highs of just 5-7°C.

Then into Friday, another low pressure system moves up from the south-west bringing further wet and windy weather. Friday will start dry but with strong winds. Heavy rain (60-80mm) is possible by the end of the week.

The outlook remains unsettled into the weekend and into next week with further spells of wet and windy weather but less extreme and with slightly longer drier interludes.
