More showers in store but warm weather on the way

It felt more like autumn than late spring over the weekend with low pressure bringing strong to gale force winds, heavy rain and blustery showers. At Mumbles Head weather station in Swansea the wind reached severe gale force 9 on Saturday with a gust of 63mph recorded, the wind strong enough to bring down one or two trees.

There was also some very wet weather over the weekend, especially in Snowdonia. So far this month Capel Curig has had 130.2mm of rain but around 90mm of this fell over the weekend. The average rainfall for the whole of May at Capel Curig is 132.7mm.

However, the inclement weather didn't stop Welsh Women Walking who are celebrating their fifth anniversary, from reaching the top of Pen y Fan on Sunday morning along with some of their supporters.

And it wasn't a total washout over the weekend, with 6 hours of sunshine recorded at St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan on Sunday.

Thankfully it is less windy today with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers although parts of north and northeast Wales had a wet morning with a few hours of heavy rain.

Tomorrow more showers will brew-up and will turn heavy in places with thunder but a lot of places will miss them and stay dry. The north and west coast should become clear and sunny in the afternoon with top temperatures reaching between 12 and 15°C.

As for the rest of the week, the weather will improve with high pressure on the way bringing dry, settled conditions and good sunny spells.

It will become warmer as well with temperatures rising into the mid to high teens perhaps reaching 20°C in places on Friday afternoon although some coasts will be a little cooler with onshore breezes. The fine weather should last into the weekend but may break during Sunday.
