Every year Autumn brings about change in Ambridge: We’re no longer out on The Green at the fete, lounging by the pool at Home Farm or on a long summer evening stroll up Lakey Hill. It’s time to turn our attentions to root vegetables, silage and cider.
Even though the nights are drawing in and the weather is less enjoyable there are still dependable village events to lift the spirits.
The Flower and Produce Show: The annual village competition for home produce – flowers, vegetables, jams, cakes… You name it, there’s probably a category for it. Competition is always fierce and this year there is the added attraction of the inaugural Freda Fry Memorial Award for Best in Show.
Apple Day: Hosted in October primarily in the community orchard at Grange Farm. Essentially an apple-themed fun day: apple games, apple food and of course, cider. Typically there’s a Grundy-led demonstration of the cider-making process and Eddie has his clipboard at the ready to sign people up for the cider club.
If you’re not one for public events, there’s always The Ambridge Tearoom for some comforting cake and a warming cup of something. If you’re after something stronger, settle in for a cosy night at The Bull and try their selection. If you’re any good at quizzes, Bert and Joe will happily recruit you to their team.
