Lynda, we love you

Radio 4

As Lynda Snell resigns from the fete committee to make room for younger members, we look back on her achievements in Ambridge.

Too easily dismissed as a blow-in by Joe Grundy and Brian Aldridge, Lynda is an energetic organiser who has revitalised many Ambridge traditions that may have fallen by the wayside without her efforts.

Her Resurgam garden may have been seen as slightly self-indulgent, but the community is usually hugely appreciative of her efforts to bring the village together. Whether it’s persuading unwilling amateur thespians to take part in the Christmas show, creating steering groups and heading up committees to ensure village functions stay on track, or campaigning vigorously against any threat to Ambridge, Lynda’s a force of nature. Like most energetic people she’s sometimes avoided by villagers, but only because they know once she has them in her sights they’ll be powerless to resist.

Despite never having had children, she has always had an affinity with young people. When Kate Madikane was going through one of her many tricky phases, it was Lynda that was able to reason with her and the two still have a mutually respectful bond. She's also got a good relationship with her two step daughters, Leonie and Coriander, and adores her grandson Mungo.

Devoted husband Robert adores his ‘Lyndybottom’, curbs her excesses and consoles her when her good intentions are misconstrued. She may be a contentious member of Ambridge life, but you’d always, always want her on your side.

Lynda Snell: Love her or hate her, she certainly gets things done.
