Ruby Robbed By Jacko

ruby.jpgAs I write this, Ruby Murray still holds the record for the most records in the pop charts - five - at the same time. Her moment was March 1955, a month in which she sold over 650 000 records. Her chart performance has not been bettered since - not by Elvis, The Beatles, Madonna, Springsteen or Kylie. we've always been rather proud that a gal from the Donegal Road, Belfast could have delivered this.

But guess what - Michael Jackson is likely to have a raft of tunes in the Top 20. Possibly more than five and maybe even the entire chart. Such is the nature of the download age that we don't have to wait for the records to get pressed, shipped and registered. We was robbed.

Glad to read this praise for Ruby Murray - I still have some of her old 78s: "Evermore" was a favourite... Once stopped her at the stage door of the old Empire Theatre, Edinburgh, for a photograph. This had to be taken with "open flash" as my then camera (a folding Kodak 620) had no flash contacts built in, so I had to press the shutter, fire off the flash from my left hand, then close the shutter. It worked amazingly well and I still treasure that shot along with a similar one, same place, same procedure, of all round entertainer Danny Kaye (remember him with "Tubby the Tuba?"). In these days, fans could get so close to the star without any interference from bouncers or bodyguards! Happy days.
