Well as shocks go, the announcement of David Bowie’s death was right up there. Anyone who came of age in the 70s will feel this as quite a blow. Who else was capable of so many brilliant songs, styles, fashions and videos? Whatever he did, he always, always looked so effortlessly cool. We’ll all have our favourites but I’ll go with Life On Mars and Sound and Vision to lead the parade. I did a Top of the Pops once in which he recorded a song (which I don’t think was ever used as it didn’t chart) but he foxed everyone especially the cameramen by jumping off the stage with his guitar and sung as he strolled around the studio floor. It was wonderful! There’ll be loads on R2 today obviously, though it is a little early to be more specific...
Elsewhere (and rather trivially) I have a streaming cold and I’m off to see The Revenant. For a gentle start to the week. On the show tonight international best selling author Michael Lewis talking The Big Short. Now a movie with Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Steve Carell, it tells a complicated, riveting, extraordinary tale of misfits who spotted that the biggest credit bubble in history was about to burst. They bet against the banking system and made a killing. It’s an amazing story-don't miss Michael after 6.
And WINNING THE JACKPOT oldies works for that and the Lotto winners at the weekend.
