Ruth's finest moments

Julie|12:46 UK time, Tuesday, 2 September 2008

Calling all Ruth fans: do not miss tonight's episode! Ruth's had many eventful moments over her years in Shieldinch but tonight she surpasses herself. I don't want to reveal all just now but if you really want to know what happens then check out the Spoilers page.

So, it seems appropriate to relive some of her finest hours. We've been discussing it in the office and have been remembering fondly such scenes as Ruth charging up the stairs then chucking her mum down them, and the time she kidnapped wee Franco. She's also stabbed Scott (he must be a forgiving guy), returned from Italy with a secret husband, rifled through Marty's medical files at the surgery, and beat up Iona twice!

The episode that really got us talking today is when she took her revenge on Marty on Valentine's Day. She let him think all was well before handing him a syphilis leaflet, disguised as a Valentine's card! She chucked him and all of his clothes out into the street, then forced him to sell his business to Lenny and give her the proceeds. Marty was quickly sent packing and believes his wife has since had an abortion.

Two of the team are now arguing about whose idea it was to disguise the syphilis leaflet as a Valentine's card...

You can relive Ruth's life with Marty in our photo gallery, and watch some of her classic clips.

What are your favourite Ruth moments? I have to confess to enjoying the scene in which she beat up Iona, before Roisin and Gina save the day :)

So, did you all see last night's show? If not, check out the episode guide here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/tv/rivercity/episode/0621/ and you can catch it on the iPlayer: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00d8zs2. Ruth's extreme revenge on Zoe was quite brilliant.

What d'you think is next for Ruth and Zoe? What will Nicki and Rory think of their loved one's behaviour? Will anyone be on Zoe's side?

Ruth has shown a tender side in the past (remember when she saved Madonna from kidnap, despite everyone thinking she'd taken her?) and it was heartbreaking when she miscarried. Where does she go from here?

I enjoy Ruth as a character because I had a friend much like her (I know that sounds like one of those evasive sayings - "I had a friend" - but it's true in this case.) When she was okay, she was the sweetest, most patient friend in the world. When her bipolar disorder flared up, she would be phoning you at 2 AM shrieking that you were plotting to destroy her life. Much like Ruth did with Scott, she demanded that I choose between her and my partner. The worst part was when she got better again, she would be upset with me for taking anything she'd said to me personally, as if I was just supposed to put up with being attacked. That was the final straw for me really.

But I do appreciate how the show has portrayed Ruth over the years, as someone who is genuinely ill, and that she has friends who do her best to support her even when she's attacking them.

I enjoyed the attempt made by ruth to get zoe the sack from the surgery. Loved the way she disguises herself and nicks the prescription pads and then burns them at her flat. It just gives you a great insight into the way her mind works. Glad to say that zoe escaped on that ocassion due to the doctor thinking it was her fault. Having said that Ruth then went on to persuade the doctor to say nothing to Zoe, and then told Zoe she had smoothed things over with the doc. Phew Ruth is one freaky character!
