Newsweek Scotland: The big event of the week

What's the big event of the week for you? I'm trying to decide between the arrival (finally) of the English asparagus from the fields of Worcestershire and Lincoln and the Cup Final at Hampden when the Hibs get their hands (finally) on the trophy.

For Michael Moore it is probably the publication of the submissions to his UK government consultation on the referendum - all 3000 of them. Doesn't sound a lot, does it, when the Scottish government got over 20,000. After all more of us vote in Westminster elections than Holyrood ones. What message does this give us? Probably that most sensible folk have been waiting for the asparagus.

At the risk of boring you, we discuss the referendum with John Downie of the SCVO, one of the Future of Scotland group who are wrestling the agenda from the politicians and conducting their own survey of what people want. They are likely to propose a second question in the referendum in the belief that is what the Scots want and that it is only the parties who don't want to hear the people's voice because they are all playing their own private game with our country.

We will be asking if Britain has a coherent foreign policy because an American think tank led by a former Ambassador says we don't. We are weakening NATO, threatening the US alliance and being isolated in Europe. That's not a message a Conservative Foreign Office will want to hear.

We delve into the claims this week that London would stop all naval contracts to Scottish yards and ask: Really? Would they? Even if Scotland had the facilities and expertise and value for money? What would be the point of that? Vindictiveness, perhaps. We hear from a defence expert who doubts the claims.

We hear of the difficulties of running medical services in remote areas - think Ardnamurchan - and ask Douglas Fraser to say why we should be worried about Greece exiting the Euro. In journalism, it is the what does it mean for ME!? question. We have an intriguing item on Taleban poetry and Angus Macleod on the papers. What more do you want - only asparagus spears and a Hibs win!

Join me tomorrow at 8.

there surely is only one big story this week:

" For lunch in the parliamentary restaurant, Ms McAlpine was understood to have had smoked venison with Strathdon Blue cheese dressing and poached red wine pear, followed by breast of Scottish chicken with grilled asparagus chorizo, olives and parma ham. The first minister had asparagus and soup."

No comment Neil, I don't know how to follow that! But but seriously Derek, another great programme today from start to finish. Writing as a politically non-aligned listener I can't wait to hear the prog on a Saturday as there are usually some fresh contributers, some of whom are new to me, and like today's John Downie can bring a note of sanity to important subjects.
