Margaret Thatcher outside Downing Street on general election day, 1987.
We are making a number of schedule changes at Radio 4, to allow Baroness Thatcher’s life and achievements to be fully remembered and assessed over the coming days.
On Monday at 8pm, Peter Riddell, director of the Institute for Government, presents Margaret Thatcher: Potency and Paradox, a comprehensive obituary on her time in Downing Street. Drawing on specially recorded interviews with friends, former cabinet colleagues and rivals and members of the establishment, the programme explores the background to the many extraordinary moments of her premiership.
Tuesday’s Thought for the Day will be presented by the Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool. Then, at 9.02am, Andrew Neil presents The People’s Thatcher, a portrait of the late prime minister as reflected through voices and opinions of ordinary men and women who supported and voted for her as well as those for whom she became nothing short of a figure of loathing.
Starting on Tuesday, Reflections on Thatcher is a series of brief extracts from diverse writings that follow her rise and fall. The authors include Barbara Castle, Alan Clark, John Major, Julian Barnes and others (12.55pm and 7.42pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Monday and Tuesday).
Woman’s Hour will devote a special edition on Wednesday to Britain’s first and only female prime minister. On Saturday at 11.02am, What Thatcher Did Next will reflect on her life after leaving office.
There will also be extensive coverage and debate in news and current affairs programmes and in Any Questions?
On Wednesday 17 April at 10am, Radio 4 will broadcast Baroness Thatcher’s funeral service live from St Paul’s Cathedral, with commentary by James Naughtie. There will be no Woman's Hour. Episode 3 of An Everyday Story of Afghan Folk will be at 7.45pm. Episode 1 of The Big Ditch? How the Panama Canal Changed the World and Episode 3 of Wordaholics can be heard the following Wednesday.
We’ll let you know about any further schedule changes on our website as soon as they are confirmed.
