Stan Was, a producer in the Radio 4 presentations department (and practically the in-house photographer - you'll see lots of his work in the Radio 4 pool on Flickr.com) was present in the Loose Ends studio Saturday and took some lovely pics of the two bands on the show: The Mummers and Smoke Fairies. Yours truly was present for a magical collision of Radio 3 interactive head (and Proms producer) Roland Taylor and Radio 4 newsreader Kathy Clugston in Studio 70A this week. They had, naturally, brought their Ukuleles and they played Ode to Joy - the centrepiece of the big Ukulele Prom that Roland is producing - down the line for a Radio Ulster arts programme. Then I recorded Kathy and Roland's impromptu verse and chorus from Norwegian Wood. Here's the audio and here they are in action:

Nevertheless, as you know, Steve, I do occasionally listen to Radio 4 (Reith, for example), so if you want to join us at the legendary Nag's Head (or indeed, prom 45), please all feel free. As for music, Radio 3 is probably slightly more musical than Radio 4, although who, do you feel, has the most catholic tastes?

Radio 3 tends to avoid 'pop', if only because so many other stations broadcast the stuff. Yet classical, jazz and world music can all, on occasion, be popular, so the distinctions between different musical genres tend to fray on the edges.
Radio 4, with its focus on speech, can take a less tribal view of music than 1, 2, 3 etc. I should perhaps confess, as a promenader, to more protestant tastes, although, on occasion, methinks we do protest too much!
