Where would we be without a helping hand from time to time? We’re so lucky on In Tune to be able to offer the space and opportunity for artists to shine and it’s a week to celebrate our home-grown talent – all of whom have had help from the great teaching institutions when it was needed.

Birmingham City Organist Thomas Trotter honed his craft on the organ of King’s College Cambridge (in the picture I'm with Thomas in Birmingham Town Hall during a live In Tune for the Mendelssohn Weekend in 2009), the young artists on Thursday’s show have had assistance from the Park Lane Group, and the Sacconi Quartet were given instruments from altruistic benefactors (if that’s not tautology!) and the Royal Society of Musicians.

The Cardinall’s Musick have the use of the Duke of Norfolk’s private chapel for their outstanding recordings, and now the In Tune studio to is to herald a year celebrating the genius of the great 17th century composer William Byrd.

Christian Blackshaw – most aristocratic and thoughtful of pianists – brings his Mozart and young Edward Watson, of the Royal Ballet, the joy of dancing to Prokofiev’s dramatic score for Romeo and Juliet.

A Happy New Year indeed!

  • Comment number 1.

I think coughing has declined at concerts over recent years. My theory is that the smoking ban and nicotine replacement has helped, as lungs are now better aerated!

Concert irritants - starter for ten:

    1 Coughing during movements

2 Unwrapping cough sweets during movements

    3 "Reflex" coughing between movements

    4 Talking during the music

    5 Eating noisily/unwrapping sweeties

6 Coming in late and expecting to be/being shown to seats in the middle of a row

7 Mobile phones - just getting them out in a darkened auditorium is annoying, never mind ringing phones/photography with phones

    8 Humming along

    9 Whistling along

10 People who spend too much time on blog sites complaining about everyone else...

A collective noun for a group of cellists ought to be a choir as the cello is the closest instrument to the human voice

  • Comment number 4.

please could you tell Christopher Purves that his performance as Beckmesser, I think it was at the Albert Hall, at least I saw it on telly, was the best, funniest interpretation that I have ever seen and I just wish he could do it again as a proper stage performance at the Met or R~O~H or ENO. I shall never never forget it. PLEASE pass this on.

I should also like to say that it took me so long to find 'Comments' that I missed half the programme and will have to listen to it again on iplayer, do you really want people's comments?
