Grimmy's fantasy in 90 minutes

Rhianna Dhillon

Movie Critic

Day three of Educating Grimmy has begun – it’s been a hectic morning. We recalled the events of last night, where Grimmy chose to watch The Breakfast Club to further his movie education and it went down a storm. Or at least better than anyone could have predicted.

Apart from having to be told off by his neighbour about his escaping puppy, Grimmy managed to watch the film all the way through and more importantly, enjoyed it. The Breakfast Club is very 80s - big hair, baggy shirts and a hell of a lot of over-acting but it was full of the day to day pressures of being a teenager at a typical high school, with cliques, drugs and megalomaniacal teachers. He gave it 4 stars… as did I. I’m genuinely starting to fear for my job.

Today’s genre is fantasy, which could be anything up to and including Twilight, Avatar, The Neverending StoryandLabyrinth. Labyrinth was a popular choice for our watch and tweet-along tonight but as I explained yesterday, it would have been a bit trippy to see David Bowie in too-tight leather trousers and I think I might have lost Grimmy in the maze of rubbish special effects. So I am over the moon that Grimmy picked The Fifth Elementas tonight’s film, he’s a man of taste, who saw that coming? The Fifth Element is another opportunity to seeBruce Willis wearing a vest, except this time it’s orange. He drives a flying taxi because it’s set in space - Milla Jovovich, a clone, drops into his cab one day and the rest is history. Well, it will be if you join us from 6pm tonight and tweet us what you think of the film.

One of my favourite scenes fromThe Fifth Element. Look closely (ish) and you’ll see Mathieu Kassovitz, the love interest in Amélieand the director of La Haine.

Daniel Radcliffe joined us in the studio, what a sweet, polite guy - so easy to talk to and gave us some salacious gossip, which I couldn’t possibly repeat… He was more approachable than Vanessa Hudgens, although not as pretty. I’m going to hazard a guess that he’s more normal than tomorrow’s big guest, Miley Cyrusand he confessed to knowing absolutely nothing about fantasy films despite starring in one of the biggest franchises of all time (Harry Potter, in case you were wondering. Which hopefully you weren’t). I know it’s easy to write off a fantasy film as one for the nerds but it really is one of the biggest grossing genres of them all. Lord of the Rings anybody? I love films like Star Wars and The Fifth Element, which blur the lines between fantasy and Sci –Fi. It’s the ultimate escapism; you don’t constantly search for parallels in your day to day life, unless you work with Ewoks. If you fancy a relaxing, easy to watch fantasy film, stick on Stardust. It’s got witches, an invisible world, ghosts, comical deaths, a star personified, Ricky Gervais, Robert De Niro, David Walliams, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sienna Millerand even a fleeting cameo from our new Man of Steel…in fact, forget the film, just celeb watch! AND Take That’s number 1 hit Rule the World features (Don’t let that put you off).
