Hi, my name is Maggie. I first heard about the BBC work experience scheme from my Principle. I applied for the scheme using a link on our school portal. My application was successful and I was invited to the assessment centre.

During my time with the BBC I worked with Internal Communications, some of main tasks were:

• To work on features for the intranet portal of the BBC

• Create and edit HR web pages

• Make a list of programmes that could be featured on the intranet

• Create a short film about the summer work experience scheme

Every task I was given was challenging and so much fun to complete, I always felt so proud of myself after I saw the finished product of my task and saw the end result. I was very lucky to have been chosen to be part of the scheme, as I was able to learn new skills that would last me a life time and further develop the skills I already had. For this I am forever thankful to my mentor for all her help and advice.

This summer I had the most amazing opportunity to be chosen to work with the BBC for a week. I was placed in television HQ in broadcasting house and it has been one of the most eye-opening and inspiring experiences I've ever had. On my first day we had to complete all necessary health and safety checks amongst other normalities to ensure our placement was safe and benefited us all, we them spilt off into our working groups and we met our supervisors. I had the best supervisor I could have wished for, all staff made us all feel completely welcome, equal and a part of their team. Throughout the week I carried out many tasks that opened my eyes about television and all the effort that went into it. I attended commissioning meetings, met schedulers and helped out with paperwork in the office. During all these experiences I asked lots of questions and every single person was more than happy to answer in more detail these questions and I felt generally appreciated and a part of the team. Luckily, my supervisors allowed us to get the chance to visit radio and news in this week because it was also in my interests which helped me a lot. I am so grateful to the BBC for this experience and feel as if the staff went above and beyond to allow me to get the best experience that was possible. In one week the BBC altered and enhanced my knowledge and respect for television and the BBC in general, I have no complaints I absolutely loved it and would recommend highly!

*The Summer Work Experience Scheme was developed by BBC Outreach & Corporate Responsibility for young people who live or study in the London boroughs where we have large staff sites – Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham. This summer, 16 young people spent a week working in a number of departments across the business. The scheme is intended to help those in our local communities learn more about the how the BBC works, as well as helping our staff understand the views of our audiences.
