Welcome to Cue Sheffield!

Neil Land

Chief Adviser & Business Manager BBC Sport

Snooker and Sheffield – the two are synonymous with one another, part of the UK’s sporting heritage. It is 38 years since the Crucible hosted its first World Snooker Championship and we’ve been there for every single one.

The BBC broadcasts more live Snooker than any other sport, a measure of the enduring love that audiences have for the game. This year, alongside our usual comprehensive coverage of the championship, we’re offering something slightly different.

We've created Cue Sheffield - a bunch of BBC programmes and free events to celebrate the World Snooker Championship across the city. It started before the tournament began with live broadcasts in Sheffield from the One Show and BBC Breakfast, plus a special edition of Radio 5 live's comedy panel show, Fighting Talk. For the first 12 days of the tournament, we’ve set up our studio in the Winter Garden – a chance to see the likes of Hazel Irvine, Steve Davis and John Parrott presenting our coverage on BBC Two.

Across this first Bank Holiday weekend in May there will be live shows including Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Radio Sheffield’s Paulette Edwards, 6 Music’s Jarvis Cocker & Steve Lamacq, Radio 2’s Ken Bruce plus special live music events from the city’s iconic Leadmill venue.

There will be something for kids as CBBC favourites, Blue Peter and Match of the Day Kickabout record programmes around the city. Tying in with these programmes, BBC Get Inspired are laying on a range of free sporting activities - including the Snooker-Football tie-up ‘Snookball’ and a chance to experience a virtual cycle of the Tour de Yorkshire. We’re also offering local schools and city visitors the ‘BBC Experience’ – a pop-up dome containing loads of great BBC stuff including the latest in digital innovation and the chance to be a sports commentator for the day.

Cue Sheffield is a partnership with the sport, the city and the people of Sheffield. Thanks to the support of Sheffield Hallam University, we’ve been able to target work experience opportunities on these shows for their media and journalism students. It’s a chance for them to learn more about the mechanics of live broadcasting and the challenges of delivering high quality content to millions of listeners…beyond the familiarity of a traditional radio studio. We’re also involving Hallam’s event management students with the running of our sporting activities across the city and linking up with Sheffield City Council’s teams to jointly promote the events. It’s a team effort.

We hope there is something for everyone to enjoy – young and old, Snooker-fanatic or proud local. If you are in the area, why not pop along?
