After the boycotts that dogged the Olympic Games in the 1980s, many athletes argued that sport and politics should not mix but several Olympians have dabbled in the world of politics over the years.
Britain's double Olympic champion Sebastian Coe is the most obvious to spring to mind, while Russia's Alexander Karelin won three wrestling golds and one silver before being elected to parliament in 1999.
But neither can hold a torch to British middle distance runner Philip Noel-Baker.
He won Olympic silver in the 1500m at the 1920 Antwerp Games, a year after his involvement in the formation of the League of Nations - a forerunner of the United Nations.
For his "lifelong ardent work for international peace and co-operation", Noel-Baker was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1959.
He is the only Olympian, to date, to be awarded the prize.
Which current Olympians do you think would make good politicians?
