The Soviet Union proved a real powerhouse after joining the Olympic movement in 1951 and competing at nine summer Olympic Games from 1952-88.
They topped the medals table on seven occassions and finished second on the other two.
The first time they achieved the feat was at the 1956 Melbourne Games, where they won 98 medals.
Thier total comprised 37 golds, 29 silvers and 32 bronzes at only their second summer Olympic Games.
Gymnast Larissa Latynina, who would go on to win a record 18 Olympic medals, contributed four golds, one silver and one bronze to the haul.
Distance runner Vladimir Kuts was the star of the athletics team, winning double gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
Kuts, who died of a heart attack, aged 48, enjoyed a rivalry with British athletes Chris Chataway and Gordon Pirie in the mid 50s and the trio reduced the world record by 23 seconds in just three years.
