#Mercury6Music – what is missing from the Mercury Prize shortlist?

So the nominations for this year’s Mercury Prize have been announced (Wednesday 10 September). Cue: the usual online frenzy of “told-you-sos” and “shock absences” surrounding the shortlist – with one even angrily headlining their story with “Why No Ed Sheeran in the Mercury Prize nominations?”

As ever, the 12 albums nominated include several names you could’ve quite confidently bet your prized record collection on such as Royal Blood’s self-titled debut, Damon Alban’s ‘Everyday Robots’ and performance poet Kate Tempest’s ‘Everybody Down’ (the former two being the favourites to win at the awards ceremony on 30 October). Then there are the curveballs that the judges like to throw in there to keep us on our toes, including FKA Twigs’ ‘LP1’and the splendidly named jazz trio, GoGo Penguin with ‘v2.0’.
But with so many great albums from the last 12 months not even getting a peep in (James? Elbow? La Roux?), we thought we’d hand Sunday’s show (14 September, 6-8pm) over to you to celebrate YOUR favourite records of 2014 from the UK and Ireland.
So what tracks should we play from albums you reckon are criminally MISSING from this year’s nominations? Check out the full Mercury Prize shortlist here.
Some album ideas for starters:
Brian Eno and Karl Hyde’s ‘Someday World’
Elbow’s ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’
James’s ‘Petite Mort’
La Roux’s ‘Trouble in Paradise’
Morrissey’s ‘World Peace is None of Your Business’
Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’
Temples’ ‘Sun Structures’
Wild Beasts’ ‘Present Tense’
