This week’s Now Playing (Sunday 25 January, 6-8pm) is all about the humble and gracious acoustic guitar.
25 years ago this week, MTV’s Unplugged broadcast for the first ever time. And which band played this momentous premiere? Squeeze, of course.
So it got us thinking, why not celebrate the soft white underbelly of rock (or other musical genres) with a Now Playing entirely dedicated to the mighty acoustic guitar? Or rather, Tom Robinson needs your help, dear listener, to create the ultimate acoustic guitar-inspired playlist.
It can be a secret weapon in the armoury of the shredder, an industry standard among the folk fraternity, and an instrument favoured by some of the most important musicians throughout musical history.
There are, obviously, thousands of acoustic moments in music, and loads of artists (Nirvana, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill and even Kiss) have released acoustic-only albums. Some artists have gone through acoustic phases (Beck, Led Zeppelin, Metallica), and other artists use the acoustic guitar as a gateway to satanic majesty (Tenacious D).

We want definitive acoustic moments: poignant rock ballads, surprise acoustic moments from bands you wouldn’t expect, amazing acoustic cover versions, or simply songs where the strum is mightier than the riff.
Get your acoustic-inspired suggestions to Tom – including the reasons WHY - via the hashtag #Acoustic6Music to help create a playlist. Comment on the Now Playing Facebook page, here on the blog, email nowplaying@6music.co.uk or drag tracks onto our Spotify and Rdio playlists.
