#6MusicCycles - help create a cycling playlist

Alex Burnard

Content Producer

With the Tour de France starting in Leeds this weekend (Saturday 5 July), us at Now Playing Towers are joining in the 6 Music Cycles season of celebrations by inviting you to help us create a cycling-inspired playlist.

The race event will be the 101st Tour, and the first to start in the UK since 2007. From the start in Leeds to the finish in Paris on 27 July the riders would have cycled 3,500km. Ouch. I hope they’re wearing those padded lycra things.

So what should be in the playlist? We'll be hearing from some well-known cycling-loving names plus hooking up with online cycling communities to pick a few tracks. But the rest is up to YOU.

You could go for:

  • Songs with cycling references in them, or literally about cycling, like ‘Bicycle Race (I Like To Ride My Bicycle)’ by Queen, ‘Broken Bicycles’ by Tom Waits, and obviously Kraftwerk’s ’Tour de France'?
  • How about songs you like to cycle to? What gets you pumped when you’re at that spin class? Or cycling through the countryside? Or racing to get to work.
  • Geographical references to do with the Tour route, look at the route here ?
  • Cycling puns! We all love a pun so…Wheel, Spoke, Frame, Tyre/Tired, Seat, Brake/Break, Chafe…other words in songs that are or sound like cycling parts…?
  • Or any other wonderful reason for a song, as long as the reason is cycling related. We’re pretty strict about that.

As per, you can contact us by posting your song ideas under here, on the 6 Music and Now Playing Facebook pages, Tweet suggestions to #6MusicCycles or drag tracks onto our collaborative Spotify and Rdio playlists.
