Six stunning photos of today's "hurricane sun"

Chris Hitchings

Across the British Isles, people have been looking to the skies today as the sun took on a mysterious shade of red.

The phenomenon was first spotted in the West of England and Wales, before moving across other parts of the UK. It has been caused by sands picked up in the Sahara by wind as it moves northward with ex-hurricane Ophelia.

For many, it was a perfect chance to get out with their cameras.

1) Caroline Hooper captured this image in Notgrove, Gloucestershire

2) In Wiltshire, Judy captured this image of the sun peeking through the trees

3) At the home of Downton Abbey, the red sun created a dramatic scene

4) Zoe Klienman captured this image of the BBC's New Broadcasting House looking sinister this afternoon

5) Over Chester, the sun was captured by @ReevesLj

6) And finally, this stunning footage was captured in Bristol
