At 21:53 27th Nov 2011, BARBARA POWELL wrote:Thank you for the chance to see a puss moth cocoon on Unsprung. Many years ago a friend found a pair of mating puss moths and we successfully raised a batch of their spectacular caterpillars in the local playgroup. As the textbooks said they needed to pupate on tree bark, we released them onto the poplar tree where we had been gathering the leaves to feed them, and so never saw what happened next.
Another brilliant caterpillar is the Emperor, we found a female and were able to cage it so that it would attract a male. By putting the cocoons out to overwinter in a hedge, and watching for emerging adults in the spring, we managed to keep the cycle going for three years.
