It sounded like it was under water - is it some sort of crayfish or shrimp

Definitely a corncrake. You can call them up by drawing a comb across a credit card. Sounds exactly the same!

Its a corncrake I live in Orkney and hear themregularly but its not so easy to see them, have only seen 5 in last 2 years, brilliant camoflauge
