What music would you choose for our animal stars?
It was the mysterious Kevin Carter's idea that 'Teenage Kicks' would be the perfect soundtrack to illustrate the sibling rivarly of our two heron chicks. But what about our other animal characters? The patient osyercatcher mum, the gangsterish buzzards or the ugly/cute barn owl baby Bob... what soundtrack would you give these guys?

For the barn owl chicks Billy Idol - Rebel Yell, because the lyrics are "in the midnight hour she cried more more more and its quite furious - like when the chicks are getting all manner of different things "down their neck"! Or Echo and the Bunnymen - Killing Moon because "fate up against your will, through the thick and thin - he will wait until you give yourself to him" I think is appropriate for feeding and both have a mystic quality suitable for owls.
Finally for the grass snakes in the compost heap - Souxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence because "the sun is up, the sky is blue, its beautiful and so are you, wont you come out and play, look around" Maybe this is appropriate for snakes, as it is a haunting tune, there are many of them, suggesting the snakes are asking each other to play together and as many people have a fear of snakes it has a fun element?

(Tho' "Pogo-Packham" songs generally seem tailor-made for most of the delightfully enthusiastic youngsters featured!) Regards, TB.
PS - I, too, love just the natural sounds of all these brilliant creatures (Chris Watson - much more please!!), or no sound at all to accompany at least some of the excellent wildlife footage (don't get me started on the Beeb's seemingly inescapable, intrusive, gratuitous, wallpapery, "incidental" music (excellent audio-camouflage, also, for the Chris P generation - and many either side of this I suspect! - grumpy, grumpy!!) - but I also greatly enjoy the so-speedily and cleverly-choreographed, anthromorphic pieces to specially selected tracks! I also recognise that Springwatch has, to some extent, become similar to a magazine-style programme, and seems to aim to include a little of something for everyone, across all age groups etc, etc - and so, almost inevitably, works better in places for some folk than for others and "vice versa". I imagine that it is thus all too easy to inadvertently cause offence and this must be tricky for the producer et al to juggle, especially over a three-week period, using a lot of live or quickly-recorded pieces - the old fine line problem I guess. I imagine I'm being highly annoying (including to myself!) just by contributing this "stuff", but I've become side-tracked yet again from what I was planning to do on-line and the "STOP!!!" button has, as ever, failed ... (I'm sure the "PS" bit should be shorter - considerably! - than the main message ... ). Sorry all! The END.
