Friday Flickr Favourites - National Marine Week

Jeremy Torrance web producerJeremy Torrance web producer|12:00 UK time, Friday, 13 August 2010

Editor's note: While Jeremy's away researcher Ella Davies provides a round up of your brilliant marine photos.

What better way to round off a fortnight celebrating our national marine treasures than a themed Friday Flickr favourites? Try saying that ten times fast!

You've obviously been having a brilliant time at the beach this summer so thanks to everyone that remembered their camera and added photos to our Summerwatch group. Here are the Nature UK team's coastal best picks.

Marvellous mammals

Ally Kemp was lucky enough to see the bottlenose dolphins of the Moray Firth up close and personal. Everyone likes this show off!

Niknok2007 photographed a rather more leisurely scene on the Farne Islands featuring 'beach bum' grey seals.

Along the shore

We love the perfect camouflage of this shore crab by Alison Brown.

Jo92photos' eye-watering capture of a snakelocks anemone in a Cornish rockpool is a real reminder of how vibrant the world under the waves can be.

Dominic Heard had a great day out at the beach, packing his camera and a one-gallon aquarium to capture this common blenny amongst others. In Dominic's own words, the first rule of rockpooling is "Do no harm. Take nothing but pictures" and we're very glad he got some excellent shots!

Bird bonanza

Of course a trip to the seaside isn't complete without a few gulls. We think Sean Driscoll's photo of an adult and juvenile herring gull shows the best side of these familiar chip-muggers.

Jeff Cohen's awkward gannet reminds us of staggering across a pebbly beach. It's not always easy to look glamorous!

Finally we couldn't feature coastal photos without that colourful cutie the puffin. The composition of Nick Slack's shot really caught our eye.

It's great to see my Anemone photo being included in the blog. They were so fascinating to watch and looked almost tropical with those superly rich colours. A rockpool hunt is always rewarding. My little gandaughter particularly liked the pea crabs and hermit crabs.

Can anyone come up with the reason why large groups of juvenile swallows are gathering on gutters and around houses here in Tighnabruaich which is a costal village in Argyll, Scotland? They are also flying up under the eaves of our houses each morning around 8 am each morning as if they are feeding but I can see no obvious evidence of hatching insects. I have never seen them behaving like this before here. The swallows are grouping in small flocks all over the village - earlier than they usually do. Any ideas?
