Springwatch highlights: Mon 7th June
From blazing sun to wild storms, the first weekend of this year's Springwatch was one of extremes. There was plenty of drama from the Pensthorpe nests too. The willow warblers and the wrens fledged, we had a new family of blackcaps and the kestrel chicks were developing fast. Simon moved to magical farmland further west in Dorset and his Black Fox Squad got video evidence of this near-mythical creature.
Our highlights were Martin's precarious peregrine ringing, the avocets finally hatching and Simon's look at the wonderful stamina of the singing skylark. So that's our highlights and we'd love to hear yours. (It feels like a long time ago now, but you can see Thursday's highlights here).

Looking forward to tonight :)
oh, and if you get a chance, maybe someone could mention the awful thing linked below from the Farnes' warden blog. How anyone could behave like that I just do not know.

A couple of years ago I photograped one sitting on a pavement in a residential area devouring a pigeon. I still have the photos. Another wonderful sight I have witnessed here in Devon is a white stag, so enchating and magical and something I will never forget

And our cat Smokey loved Simon with the skylarks. She's 14 and not very active but ran across the room to jump up to the tv cabinet to try and catch one. She has been watching the re-runs online. Just to complete our family Katy our dog very much enjoyed seeing the badgers and is hoping for more black & white or night vision shots. :)

I reached up to the nest just to see if all the eggs had hatched or not, sometimes there's one left, infertile.
Instantly my hand turned red with 'tiny bugs' and seconds later they were up my arm and just a few seconds later I was in the bath !!
They got absolutely everywhere. Sadly Chris I didn't save you any !

We too have mags, but also blackbirds, blue tits, sparrows & the odd thrush. All I can say is try changing the bird food, we just ask the local market trader for different types of food to attract different birds, it has seemed to work for the last couple of years. I have put the bird feeder next to the pond, so the babies can feed while mum is having a bath, also there's a tray for water.
I also play the springwatch download for the blackbird song (in my kitchen) I was amazed when Mr Blackbird sat on the patio outside to listen!

Having watched SW over the last few nights I realised that I saw a female Sparrow Hawk last month.
She flew over our back fence swooped down and banked right just above the ground a few feet infront of me and flew up and out of the garden.
What is the range from the nest they hunt in is she local? Do they regularly hunt the same places?
Could she take out a medium sized rabbit as we have 2 that are always out in the garden during the day?

Sadly, their food is being devoured by squirrels who jump over 7 ft from a fence onto the bird feeders, beating our squirrel proof defences!
How far can squirrels jump?
All we want to do is provide our birds with some food!!
