People are always asking me what films are coming up that I'm really looking forward to. I usually say the ones that I don't know anything about yet, but here I pick a selection of upcoming movies that I think could be stand outs - and ask what new releases you are eager to see.

We Need to Talk About Kevin. Obviously.

The Rum Diary. With the hope that Johnny Depp is on good form.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Although the second trailer, the almost-4 minute trailer, has some dreadful moments.

As for 2013, it's all about The Dark Knight Rises.

  • Comment number 2.

Really looking forward to Perfect Sense, it looks like my kind of movie. And it's out on friday!!!

Eastwood's J.Edgar, might be interesting, just to see how DiCaprio plays it.

Contagion could be really good. I am a big fan of Soderbergh

Andrew Niccol's sci fi thriller "In Time" just hope its as good as Gattaca. It sounds a little like Harlan Ellison's short story "Repent Harlequin, Said The Tick Tock Man" Gotta love those weird 60's sci fi titles.

  • Comment number 3.

Hi Mark...I agree with your selections but other movies I'm excited about are Contagion , We need to talk about Kevin,The Thing prequel(I'm a big fan of the original) and J Edgar

  • Comment number 4.

I'm really looking forward to "A dangereus Method" mit Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung.

Both are very good acters and Cronenberg is an interessting director. I'm also very interessted in the subject of psychology.

  • Comment number 5.

I was really looking forward to the Original Trilogy, in the vague hope that some cinemas will show it in 2D and I can take my daughter to go and see them in their big screen splendour. But, and this is a BIG BUT, if Lucas has done unto them as he has done unto the Blue Ray release, then I will keep my money and watch my old tapes at home. It's not the same as the big screen but I am not giving my money to that megalomaniac who believes it is his right to destroy the Original Trilogy just because he can.

  • Comment number 6.

    'In Time'

    'Shame'

    'Contagion'

    'Hugo'

    'Tyrannosaur'

    '50/50'

    'The Artist'

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'

    'Wild Bill'

    'The Ides of March'

    'J.Edgar'

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1' - Completely agree with you Mark.

  • Comment number 7.

John Dies at the End , it just look silly but maybe it will a deeper meaning

The Other F Word, looks like it maybe a funny look how do you be a punk and a dad

Revenge of the Electric Car the follow up to the under seen Who killed the Electric Car which shown how car companies and government worked together to try and kill it

  • Comment number 8.

Hi Mark, one film that belongs on that list is "The Help" which I have seen here in New Zealand 5 times, yes FIVE times. Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer should be a lock for the Best Actress and Supporting Actress Oscars along with the Adapted Screenplay Oscar. It's the most emotionally moving film I think I have ever seen. It's out in the UK at the end of this month :)

  • Comment number 9.

Yep mark me down too for Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method". Though I will be staying far, far way from the Oscar baiting fims you mention in your video. Both "War Horse" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" look like the worst kind of sentimental drivel. No sir I don't have the stomach for schmaltzy anymore...

As for surprises, "Drive" is a perfect example of a recent film that I knew little about going in and was absolutely blown away by. Film of the year for me (so far, here's hoping there are other pleasant surprises around the corner).

  • Comment number 10.

I'm really looking forward to "A Dangerous Method." I really loved Cronenberg previous two films, "A History Of Violence" & "Eastern Promises."

Other films I am keeping an eye out for are "50/50", "War Horse" & "J. Edgar".

Another film I want to see is "Shame" the new film from Steve McQueen. I've heard great things from friends of mine who saw it at The Toronto Film Festival.

  • Comment number 11.

    Take Shelter

Directed by Jeff Nichols, it stars Michael Shannon (the creepy looking fellow from Broadwalk Empite) who begins to suffer from apocolyptic visions and, much to the bemusement of his family, decides to make an underground shelter in his back garden. The trailer is on imdb and it just looks very very interesting!

  • Comment number 12.

It's probably gonna be cheesy but as I loved 'Robot Jox' and 'Crash and Burn' as a youngster I'm looking forward to 'Real Steel'

Fincher's 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' looks appealing, even if it does have Julian Sands in a somewhat major-ish role...

'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' has potential but as the original is only around an hour long I fear that the pacing may become somewhat plodding

'Contagion' looks paranoid enough to be thrilling, but that could just be the way the trailer was edited...

'A Dangerous Method' looks like it's going to be absolutely brilliant (Full disclosure: I'm a total Cronenberg fanboy)

I want to see Dario Argento's 'Dracula 3D', preferably NOT in 3D. After the mess that was Giallo though, I'm rather apprehensive...

'John Dies At The End' looks suitably bonkers and humorous, it's also been too long since Coscarelli's 'Bubba Ho-Tep'

I'm hoping that 'The Hunger Games' will be entirely faithful to the book and they manage to do it justice on screen.

  • Comment number 13.

I usually consider myself a bit of a film snob, but I have to admit the film I'm most looking forward to is 50/50. The trailers suggest it has a nice blend of drama and comedy, and it could be the sleeper hit comedy of the year.

  • Comment number 14.

I'm still really looking forward to Melancholia which I haven't seen yet cause I've been sick all week and got gradually got worst after your book tour stop at The Picturehouse.

But besides that.. I'm really looking forward to... The Artist, Contagion, A Dangerous Method, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which I think is gonna be great, I haven't seen the originals and to honest have no interest after it was announced Fincher was doing the English version) Hugo, The Ides of March, Immortals, In Time (i'm a big Andrew Niccol fan even though I find the Truman Show a big flawed to say the least), J. Edgar (Which i think will be brilliant), The Rum Diary

  • Comment number 15.

"Red lights". Looking forward to Mark's review as well. Let's hope is not as claustrophobic as "Buried", but the trailer is very dark as well.

  • Comment number 16.

Midnight in Paris for me; the positive reviews thus far have got me very excited to see Woody on form again, doing what he does best.

  • Comment number 17.

'Shame' is one I'm really looking forward to, 'Midnight In Paris' is Woody Allen's finest film in years and is excellent

However, 'Snowtown' which is out next month is my film of the year so far

  • Comment number 18.

Well there are so many great-looking films coming up, I hardly know where to start. Never have I been more excited about the next few months of film then I am now. Here's the ones I'm most excited about.

    The Ides of March

    The Skin I Live In

    The Rum Diary

    J. Edgar

    My Week with Marilyn

    Hugo

    A Dangerous Method

We Need to Talk About Kevin

    The Iron Lady

    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    Carnage

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

    The Adventures of Tintin

  • Comment number 19.

The one film I'm very much looking froward too is Sherlock Holmes (2) A Game of Shadows, Robert Downey Jr., Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, and Jude Law not being an annoyingly over the top pretty boy.

As for Hugo i can't help looking at Sacha Baron-Cohen without expecting him to say 'Good Moaning'

  • Comment number 20.

"The Artist". A black and white silent film about the silent era itself, which ended up winning Best Actor at Cannes - the same Cannes that gave Nicholas Winding Refn best director for "Drive"*? Count me in!

*Ignore Tree Of Life as best film. Eugh...

  • Comment number 21.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close & Annoyingly U2....

  • Comment number 22.

The Film, I am most looking forward to is Hong-jin Na's follow up to his amazing 2008 debut "The Chaser" (Mark have you seen this?) called the "Yelllow Sea". Its out this month Mark so I hope you can review because I bet I wont find a screening of it near me. If you'd gone to Canne you would have seen it.

On top of this I am looking forward to Brad Pitt's Sports Biopic Money Ball, as well as the two big remakes The Thing and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

  • Comment number 23.

By far, the movie I am looking forward to the most:

Tyrannosaur (Paddy Considine directing a great cast. I really liked the trailer. Can't wait for this one.)

Take Shelter (I thought the trailer was interesting and Michael Shannon has a sort of Willem Defoe/Christopher Walken 'real' craziness about him.)

Tintin (for the same reasons Mark listed)

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Liked the first, but I hope this one's better.)

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier. Spy (I think it opens in December here...)

Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone (The Reality Of my Surroundings was a great album...)

But the movies I'm REALLY looking forward to come out next year (Hint, hint... Ridley Scott... Chris Nolan...even Andrew Stanton...)

Ones I'm not looking forward to: The Thing prequel, which the trailers are reminding me of the Hitcher remake for a variety of reasons.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo... Because I just saw this! I don't care iif it's Fincher, either... Listening to his DVD commentary made me think he had a completely different view of what he had actually put on screen (and I now see him as an 'accidental genius' with a very good eye for visuals... It explained Alien 3 for me in any case).

  • Comment number 24.

    I'm looking forward to quite a few films, most of which have already been mentioned so I've taken one from each section/ genre of the industry, here goes;

British Blockbuster: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

    British Indie: Tyrannosour

    American Indie: Weekend

    American Blockbuster: Hugo

    Guilty Pleasure: Anonymous

    Sci fi: In Time

    Action/Epic/Fantasy: Immortals

    Horror: The Awakening

    Drama: Moneyball

    Documentary: We Were Here

    Foreign: The Monk

Not Looking Forward To: New Year's Eve, Dream House, Real Steel, Footloose

  • Comment number 25.

    Iron Lady

    A Dangerous Method

    The Master

    The Hobbit (Part 1)

    Star Trek 2

Couldn't give a monkeys about another Scorcese or Spielberg stinker. Not to mention the most over hyped series in the world, Nolan's next Batman instalment. If you ask me The Dark Knight wouldn't have been any more memorable than Batman Begins if it hadn't been for Ledger's performance.

  • Comment number 26.

    Shame.

If it's anything as good as Hunger, which was also written by Steve McQueen and starred Michael Fassbender, then that really is something to look forward to.

  • Comment number 27.

    Dr. K.

While I can't muster the same enthusiasm that you can for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, here is my list of films that I am very much looking forward this year:

    1. We Need to Talk about Kevin. I've been hearing a lot of great things about this film on the festival circuit. It's got great pedigree in front and behind the camera from a compelling and complex source material. It will be interesting to see how Ramsey handles this.

    2. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for the same reasons as you.

    3. 50/50. I'm a big fan of Joseph Gordon Levitt and when I heard the term cancer-comedy drama, then saw the trailer, I knew that this film could be one to watch. It's possible that it could turn into mawkish sentimental schmaltz but hopefully it will be do something interesting with the source material.

    4. Tyrannsaur. It comes out this week and I can't wait.

    5. War Horse. It looks like it's going to pure Spielberg, complete with John Williams soundtrack which is always worth some merit.

    6. Hugo. Just to see how Mr. Scorsese handles a family film.

    7. Moneyball. The talent behind the camera is terrific, Bennet Miller finally following up his terrific biopic Capote with this baseball drama.

    8. And of course my guilty pleasure that I am most heartedly looking forward to is Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Brad Bird, director of great animated films such as The Incredibles and The Iron Giant makes his live action debut and I'll say it I like Tom Cruise as an actor. He's always worth watching if sometimes his decisions are questionable but this looks like it could be the most fun, action packed, entertaining blockbuster of the christmas holidays.

  • Comment number 28.

I'm surprised the Doc's not looking forward to the set-before-not-sets-up-Alien 'Prometheus'. I certainly am!

  • Comment number 29.

I'm very excited about 'Tyrannosaur' especially after watching the amazing short 'Dog Altogether'.

Also 'The Woman In Black'. I'm interested to see if Daniel Radcliffe can break away from Harry Potter and if this will be the real resurrection of Hammer Horror and not the mediocre effort 'Wake Wood'

  • Comment number 30.

for me for the rest of the year there are a few defining films and plenty to look forward to next year.

. Tyrannsaur-Paddy considine's directorial debut, with a sure hand (from the trailer anyway) which seems to have toucehs of both Andrea Arnolds Fish Tank and this years Ned's, ironically made by the star Peter mullan.

. Sleeping beauty for some bizzare reasson seems interesting if only for the stir it has caused at cannes and centeral theme of the loss of innocence

. The artist ( if it is released this year) seems like it would be a treat, especailly as it is from the person who made the highly forgotten about OSS 117 films.

. Really looking forward to a film called Bellflower, an unknown american production with lots of flamethrowers and anger.

. As for films i have missed-films like Attenberg, tomboy and Pina are amongst my most looked forward. For this month the one on everyonesmind at the minute is We need to talk about kevin ( a book my mother hates but says she will see the film). Ofcourse thereare many more including Wuthering Heights, also Tin tin should be good just motion capture and 3D is, emmm, well accombination that has been entirely successful.

. Next year-A dangerous method, harakari: Death of a samurai (favourite of this year is 13 assassins) and won kar wi's new film

The good doctor is right in his assertion that the films you expect little from are the best, with films like Love like posion, Le quattro Volte, Benda billi and A seperation are among my favourites of this year

  • Comment number 31.

    The Adventures of Tintin

    The Ides of March

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

    Wuthering Heights

    The Iron Lady

    Contagion

    A Dangerous Method

    Real Steel

    Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows

    Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

    For the new year

    War Horse

    J. Edgar

    The Avengers

    The Dark Knight Rises

  • Comment number 32.

I am most looking forward to Walter Sallis' On The Road, having seen what he was able to do with the story of Che I'm sure he's more than worthy to adapt Kerouac. Other than that, most of the films mentioned in the blog are definitely on my list, as well as A Dangerous Method, but I think Polanski's Carnage has the most possibility to be a true classic gem with as much acid as Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf and Glengarry Glen Ross together!

  • Comment number 33.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned On the Road, the adaptation of Keroac's classic beat quest for truth and God. Especially after Howl's commendable transferal to the screen it's exciting to think of the possibilities for Keroac's novel, surely the more cinematic and filmic of the texts (the author himself expressed his wished to see it on the silver screen). That is to say nothing of the fact that the adaption is being helmed by none other than Walter Salles, the director responsible for bringing Guevara's memoirs of discovery and the road so vividly to life with the Motorcycle Diaries, or that it boasts a talented cast including Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortenson.

  • Comment number 34.

    pipped

  • Comment number 35.

'The girl with the dragon tattoo' i dont usually bother with American remakes, but i didn't care much for the original so i reckon Fincher could top it.

The rest of these titles i only know from this blog,

    Clint Eastwood's J Edgar.

'In time' no idea what its about but Andrew Niccol made 'Gattaca' and thats reason enough.

'Midnight in Paris' if this is Woody Allen's return form then great.

I suspect my film of the year will be the one i have the least expectation of.

  • Comment number 36.

I agree with most of your films, Tintin im really looking forward to aswell as Hugo, in regards to Breaking Dawn I dont like the twilight movies but my girlfriend is dragging me allong to see them so Im trying to be as open minded as possable.

The movies I am most looking forward to are J Edger, Resistance, Grave Encounters, The Rum Diary and even guilty pleashers like Johnny English 2 and Mission Impossable 4, despite how bad Mission Impossable may look the trailer looks rather fun.

  • Comment number 37.

I'm really looking forward to seeing The Rum Diary, i remember this being talked about a number of years ago.

I think The Help, looks like it promises alot, it seems like the sort of film that could be oscar contender but if it will be any good only time will tell.

I'm interested in We Bought a Zoo, Matt Damon is someone I tend to find amazing in whatever role he does.

There are just three films i am looking forward too. I think they will be others.

  • Comment number 38.

I'm looking forward to a film called '0000' (I think its pronounced Zero). It looks really interesting

  • Comment number 39.

Here is the trailer if your interested

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBrd5AF8kos

  • Comment number 40.

Out of that list, I have to say that Wuthering heights looks the most interesting to me!

The Tintin movie on the other hand... Why go that route with the "real" looking animation? It reminds me of Polar express, looks-wise which I'm not a fan of. Might as well do it with real actors? It doesn't have much charm, in my opinion...? It looks like a video game... It looks like it's an amusing movie (the dog probably contributes to this to a great extent) yet at the same time a missed opportunity to me; if you do a movie like that in a different way it's just a lot better. I remember Terry Gilliam saying essentially the same about Zemeckis's Beowulf which is also done in that style where the fact that it's animated is kind of pointless?

Anyway, I don't really follow what comes out nowadays as I just find that most movies that appear on my radar (which I know is merely a percentage of everything) are made on a certain level i.e. they're somewhat uninteresting. To me anyways. I remember being impressed by The American and up to a certain point by Black swan...but if you'd ask me to name more I'd struggle.

Oh wait. Happy go lucky was good too.

  • Comment number 41.

"The Film, I am most looking forward to is Hong-jin Na's follow up to his amazing 2008 debut "The Chaser" (Mark have you seen this?) called the "Yelllow Sea". Thats a great call forgot about that one and The Chaser is a cracking film.

The Rum Diary Johnny Depp and Hunter S Thompson and hoping for another

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in terms of standard.

In Time I'm also looking forward simply because Andrew Niccol is behind it and I rate him as highly as Christopher Nolan.

A Dangerous Method, Cronenberg + Mortensen = Sold

The Artist as that trailer just blew me away and looks stunning.

  • Comment number 42.

I just remembered... There is one movie I'm looking forward to: The woman in black. I'd go check that out in the cinema.

Also, what's the current status of Gilliam's The man who killed Don Quixote?? I'm sure if that one ever gets made it will be very good. :)

  • Comment number 43.

Looking forward to a Muppet double bill, obviously the upcoming Muppet movie and Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey...

  • Comment number 44.

Don't suppose your book tour will come to the U.S. :P?

  • Comment number 45.

    Hey Mark,

Have to say I am looking forward to a lot of the same movies that you are. However, I am a bit surprised you didn't give a mention to Killer Joe, which not only marks the return of one of your heroes, the great William Friedkin, but also sees him linking up with Matthew McConaughey, who seems to be getting in touch with his inner Cowboy. It also has Juno Temple in it, who usually provides good value.

Also looking forward to Moneyball, which apparently brought tears to the eyes of Bret Easton Ellis (which is some feat given he was the man behind American Psycho).

  • Comment number 46.

    A Dangerous Method.

It's a film about the relationship between Sigmund Freud (played by Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender), directed by David Cronenberg. 'Nuff said.

  • Comment number 47.

I really don't understand this weak spot you've got for the awful pouting Twilight movies, Mark. Here's a good take on them from a feminist point of view: https://skepchick.org/2008/12/why-twilight-is-hurting-america/

Also a critique of the book: https://teenskepchick.org/2008/12/26/twilight-lolita-and-he-loves-her/

  • Comment number 48.

Going for films going to be released this year (so I'm not going to include War Horse, The Muppets and J Edgar) I'm most looking forward to:

    Hugo

The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

    The Rum Diary

    The Ides of March

    The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

    50/50

The films I'm not looking forward to are:

    Footloose

Jack and Jill (I'm going against my rule because of how bad this looks)

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1

    The Three Musketeers

There are also some films I'm unsure on whether I want to see them or not like: Texas Killing Fields

    Contagion

We Need To Talk About Kevin

    Anonymous

    Moneyball

  • Comment number 49.

Which movies am I looking forward to..?

I guess from your selection, the Tintin movie, since I am a fan of the comics.

I also saw a poster for a movie called Baikonur. Now I want to see that from the name alone. It is even shot on location at the Baikonur cosmodrome.

And I'd really like to see the new Ghibli movie From Up on Poppy Hill.

I am a bit in doubt about Prometheus. Alien prequel...do we need tis? But if he really rethought it and made it a unique stand alone movie it could really be a nice treat. Haven't seen a good scifi movie for some time.

  • Comment number 50.

Am holding out high hopes for Shame.

Being a Michael Fassbender fan has been a surprisingly disappointing experience as he is generally the best thing in films that do not live up to him so to have him back with Steve McQueen is so exciting. Even if the film is a fraction as good as Hunger it will be leaps and bounds ahead of pretty much everything else he has done.

Please don't talk to me about Prometheus in all honesty I'd rather watch 300 or Jonah Hex again than watch Ridley Scott destroy the memory of the only great film he ever made. (I am however prepared to be surprised - prepared, but not hopeful)

  • Comment number 51.

    My selections are

The Rum Diary-looks like a good dramedy

The Ides of March-hopefully a great political thriller

The Awakening-looks like a good chiller

Shame-Michael Fassbender is a great actor and I look forward to seeing what he can do with this film.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1-I like the Twilight saga and am looking forward to the latest instalement.

Wuthering Heights-looking forward to the new take on the story.

    A Dangerous Method-shoukd be good.

    Moneyball-the premise sounds compelling.

    J Edgar-an interesting biopic.

Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol- I like the previous films so should be a good continuation.

The Help-looks like a good moral story.

Contagion-hopefully this will be an intense thriller.

  • Comment number 52.

Directors i have real faith in,Speiberg and Ramsey, and strangely enough Guy Ritchie. So Tintin, Kevin and Holmes. If a remake of `Dragon Tatoo` doesnt suck ,I will be amazed. Is it me or does the Three Musketeers look like a Sherlock Holmes wannabee!!

  • Comment number 53.

Roman Polanski's Carnage. Polanski's greatest films are his early ones, which were usually about a small group of people being horrible to each other in a claustrophobic setting. This film shares that theme. Could it be as good as Knife in the Water and Repulsion? We'll find out in December, man.

We Need to Talk About Kevin. Only a week-and-a-half away, but it's gonna be one long week-and-a-half. Just a handful of the talents involved in this film: Lynne Ramsay, Tilda Swinton, John C. Reill and Jonny Greenwood, the impossibly talented Radioheadian guitarist. I'm salivating.

In terms of what I'm NOT looking forward to, I must say it's Tintin and Hugo. I share Dr Kermode's incredulity and exasperation with 3D. I see this gimmick essentially as having to pay extra to be distracted from the film and end up with a headache. So I'm appalled that the two modern American masters are stooping to such a miserable level. Furthermore, I feel betrayed that they are working in the digital medium in general, after both men publically renounced digital filmmaking several years ago, promising to never abandon lovely 35mm film. But maybe I'm taking this too personal. I'll go see both movies but I'm not happy about it.

    Thanks for reading!

  • Comment number 54.

Definitely looking forward to A Dangerous Method - Cronenberg does Freud & Jung, with Vincent Cassel in the mix? I laughed so hard when I heard about this the first time, I'm still dying to see this.

Prometheus, I think, will be worth a look, hopefully Ridley Scott can rediscover some of the magic that made Alien and Blade Runner so great.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is on my list also. The trailers look excellent, and I haven't seen the original so I'm not too bothered it's a remake.

Finally, the new film from David Lynch. Oh no wait, he hasn't made a new film, has he. He's released an album. WHAT HAS GONE WRONG IN THIS WORLD?!!

  • Comment number 55.

    Well, for this year, I'm hopping to see Inkubus(https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1650537/ ), A Dangerous Method (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1571222/ ), Immortals (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1253864/ ), The Darkest Hour (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1093357/ );

However, the movie I truly want to see is Prometheus... if there is someone truly capable of making 3D worth while is ridley scott. His movies have always been submersive experiences for me, but this will be his first 3D movie...

    Hpe Tintin is good too...

  • Comment number 56.

    Oh, Sherlock Holme 2 aswell!

  • Comment number 57.

And "The Retreat" seems good also!

  • Comment number 58.

The Dark Knight Rises I'm both anxious to see and fearful that is not as good as its predecessor...

  • Comment number 59.

#49 - Scott's taken the stand alone-route with Prometheus; an original story inspired by Alien's 'Space Jockey' fossil. As I wrote earlier, set before not a set-up.

  • Comment number 60.

I'm looking forward to the following films in Oz:

    A Dangerous Method

    Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (loved the Swedish original)

TT3D Closer to the Edge (next week)

    Anonymous

Midnight in Paris (next week also)

    The Ides of March

    The Iron Lady (Boxing Day)

    The Hobbit Part 1

Most of which I'll miss as I'll be overseas during November. BUGGER! But at least I'll be able to see some great movies at the Phoenix in East Finchley. Best cinema "IN THE WORLD!"

  • Comment number 61.

Why is everyone so exited about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. If you want to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo it has been on DVD now for a long time. The extended versions even came out recently.

How can anyone take the remake seriously after seeing the trailer in which the characters (particularly Rooney Mara) talk, weird sweedish accents. Flashy trailers cannot change the fact that there isn't any real reason for it to exist. I feel we are in Let Me In territory with this, and i really, really like David Fincher.

  • Comment number 62.

None of the films in that clip are on my 'must-see' list for this year. A few people have already mentioned films i'm interested in seeing (Tyrannosaur, A Dangerous Method, Shame).

I'm curious to see The Rum Diary, mainly because I'm a huge Hunter S Thompson fan and loved the original novel, I just hope the filmmakers have done a good job of it (and not turned it into a Hangover-style debauchery fest, which the trailer would suggest it is).

A couple of films I'm looking forward to are:

    God Bless America:

Bobcat Goldthwait's satire about a man who goes on a killing spree after watching too much soul-crushing reality tv. It got a tremendous reception at the Toronto film festival and looks like it could be a hybrid of Network and Natural Born Killers or something.

    Extraterrestrial:

A spanish low-budget sci-fi by Nacho Vigalondo (writer/director of Timecrimes, the best sci-fi film of recent years, in my opinion) about a couple who wake up after a one night stand to find their city in the middle of an alien invasion.

Not sure if either of those films will be out in the UK before the end of the year but I'm looking forward to them greatly.

  • Comment number 63.

I am really looking forward to seeing Scorsese's George Harrison documentary, 'Living In The Material World'. However, the nearest cinema showing it is 70 miles away.

  • Comment number 64.

    In no particular order :

    Tyrannosaur

    The Ides Of March

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

But for guilty pleasures I'm looking forward to Paranormal Activity 3, and The Muppets, especially after this spoof trailer :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHqLcEtt368

  • Comment number 65.

Not really looking forward to the "The Thing" I can't see it making anywhere near as much of an impact as the first. As with most prequels and remakes I can't really see the need for their existence, aside from the obvious answer...money and lack of creativity/originality.

Not looking forward to Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill" that is all.

Looking forward to "The Dark Knight Rises" in an IMAX cinema.

Also Looking forward to "Prometheus" but I'd have to watch it in 2D, why 3D Ridley? Why?

"The Rum Diary" I enjoyed "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" so I hope this is good too.

  • Comment number 66.

Most of the things I'm looking forward to have been mentioned, other than TAKE SHELTER, a really good trailer!

  • Comment number 67.

    The films I'm looking forward to see between now and the new year are;

    Sleeping Beauty

    The Adventures of Tintin

    Contaigen (Despite getting mixed reviews)

    The Rum Diary

The Thing (I know its a remake of a great and much loved film, but the buzz has been mixed so I might give this one a go)

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

  • Comment number 68.

The Thing – So far the trailers look promising, and we are promised mechanical monster effects, not CGI ones. Let’s hope it also has a few surprises up its sleeve and isn’t just a slavish remake.

    Ronal the Barbarian

    Perfect Sense

    Tyrannosaur

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

We Need to Talk About Kevin

    Arthur Christmas

  • Comment number 69.

The Ides of March. (Looks great)

The Rum Diary. (Bruce Robinson. Depp. Have high hopes!)

    A Dangerous Method. (It's Cronenberg!)

We Need to Talk About Kevin.

    Carnage. (Looks great)

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. (It's Fincher. What a trailer! Sizzle!)

The Adventures of Tintin. (Not entirely sold on the look -uncanny valley anyone?)

War Horse. (I'll bet this really breaks out and grabs a massive audience! Could this be the beards' Titanic come Oscar time?)

Note: The Iron Lady. (Yes, a stunning Streep performance expected but, a moive about Thatcher! For the love of... why? Do you think it will be glossing the facts much? Hmm.)

  • Comment number 70.

Things I'm looking forward to this year -

    Sleeping Beauty

    A Dangerous Method

    Tyrannosaur

Good to see a few people mentioning 'John Dies at the End'. Definitely one to watch, as well.

  • Comment number 71.

@queenrocks21 Living In The Material World will be on BBC 2 in November shown over 2 nights the same way No Direction Home was. Don't get your hopes up though. It's not all that.

  • Comment number 72.

Also I sincerley hope that Iron Lady bombs in this country. Why would anyone want to go & see a film about that woman?

  • Comment number 73.

I really not looking forward to the 'Dragon Tattoo' remake. Its just a case of wh?, Ok the original trilogy was a mixed bag, but the original film was an excellant visual and thrilling piece of work. Fincher is a good but somewhat overated director, but Mark, if Brett Ratner had directed the remake, you would be leading the lynch mob...but hey its a good director so we will give him get the benefit of the doubt. I wonder if Daniel Craig will use the same awful accent he used in Defiance,or just sound like the swedish chef from the muppets. We shall see.

  • Comment number 74.

a few i have just remembered and i am surprised that i have forgot about them.

.Not sure if Mark will like this but The Future is a film i have been anticipating for awhile. It's the film by Miranda July the director of Me, You and everyone else we know-that is primarily why i don't think it is a film that is being hugely anticiapted by him. Her styles is cokie to the extreme but her first feature takes the mundane and makes it interesting and alive. To me she is a director who takes characters (who are open about there emotions) and serious themes and does something different, blending fantasy with reality. Kind of funny and kind of sad. i really hope it is pulled of here

. Surprised this wasn't mentioned but what about Terrence Davis's Deep Blue Sea?

. For next year there has been great Buzz surrounding Martha, may, marcy, marlene described as a film which seems like a great companion piece to Debra Grankik's Winter's Bone (anything that has that comparison seems like one that is worht seeing)

. Finally, Once was one of the best films released for many years (or at least for me) and the Documentary The Swell Seasson is coming out featuring the Band The Swell Seasson and the tribulations. Anything with the Swell seasson or the Once team behind it seems great.

So that's it along with comment 30.

  • Comment number 75.

Shame, the new Steve McQueen film has me the most excited, I loved Hunger and the premise of his ne film sounds like it's been inspired by the early Polanski works I love like Repulsion.

I just watched the Take Shelter trailor on Simon79's mention since I adore Michael Shannon. He seems to be taking the paranoia reins from his Bug days once again.

Finally, new Cronenburg and Arnold films are always cause for excitement so I shall be checking those out if they find their way down to Cornwall.

  • Comment number 76.

Any film that uses a cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song over the trailer for a covered film (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) deserves no praise! 'Thou shall NOT cover Zeppelin shall be the whole of the law'!

  • Comment number 77.

A Dangerous Method - Cronenberg is on his best form ever so I'll be there every time despite the casting of Miss Knightely.

I'm going to be a bore and say I'm not looking forward to anything that isn't a great surprise (like Drive) -

If I am looking forward to something it's Mr Nolan's moment of truth:

    The Dark Knight Rises!

Can he join directors like Leone and Greengrass and make a stunning 3rd part that surpasses it's predecessors?

    OR

Will he join Coppola and Jackson and drop the ball?

  • Comment number 78.

    Hmmm.

Mark complains about the 3D version in 1935 of "L'Arrivée d'un Train à la Ciotat" in his book "The Good The Bad And The Multiplex".

"Hugo" has a 3D shot of a train coming at the audience.

Mark is now open to the possibility that Marty might just change the "landscape of cinema."

Mark's mental train of thought has jumped the rails methinks.

    Just saying.

  • Comment number 79.

Umm, none of those films appeals to me. Next.

  • Comment number 80.

Your gonna love TT3D,Closer to the Edge, Guy Martins a natural comedy genius.

It gets lonely in those campervans!

  • Comment number 81.

i have noticed no body has flagged up the film MARGIN CALL

many good actors and a true story ( about what a big company did to save them self's )

a thrilling drama all about the script and acting hope it doesn't let me down

  • Comment number 82.

Isn't 'The Thing' (2011) a remake of 'The Thing' (1882) which is remake of the best, original version, 'The Thing - From Another World' (1951). The Howard Hawks version is the best - I guess I have a thing about this thing. Perhaps I'm wrong; when its reviewed, I'm not hearing the connection to the 1951 version...

I'm holding out for "Iron Sky" -- it better be wunderbar

  • Comment number 83.

Looking at plot description and hearing U2 in the trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close makes it sound extremely and incredibly awful

  • Comment number 84.

Based on the trailers I've seen, In Time and Moneyball look really good.

In Time: I really liked the Truman show and of course this should look beautiful with Roger Deakins' cinematography. It'll be interesting to see how Justin Timberlake does as well. I liked him in the social network and I thought he suited the kind of comedy in Friends with Benefits perfectly but this will be a completely different role.

Moneyball: Excellent trailer, and with Wally Pfister, Aaron Sorkin and Brad Pitt involved it looks like it's going to be amazing.

Also, J. Edgar looks interesting - I'm sure it will be decent as are all of Eastwood's films I've seen.

I'm surprised to say that the Mission Impossible trailer is really good as well. Brad Bird is an interesting choice of director and I'm exited to see how this change of genre works out for him.

  • Comment number 85.

P.S. I really enjoyed the first Sherlock Holmes but after watching the trailer I think this one's going to be a step down.

The Dark Knight Rises - I know I'm jumping ahead but this has got to be the most anticipated film of all time.

  • Comment number 86.

@17 fuzzyian - Have you seen Snowtown yet? I suggest reading up on the case before seeing the movie because it can be pretty disorienting even to those who are familiar with the events and followed the trial. I think it's a flawed movie but does have some unique standout elements to it.

  • Comment number 87.

I can't wait to see 50/50, Coriolanus, Dark Horse and I'm Carolyn Parker, all of which I'm seeing at the London Film Festival. I also tried (and failed) to get tickets to see We Need To Talk About Kevin at the festival, but I'm convinced that's going to be great. Also, the men of the moment, Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender, should be on top form in The Ides of March and Shame and A Dangerous Method respectively.

Add to that The Descendants (more than a little excitement about George Clooney and Alexander Payne working together), The Iron Lady, The Artist, Trishna, the tour de force of Winslet, Reilly, Foster and Waltz in Roman Polanski's Carnage, Wuthering Heights, Werner Herzog's Into The Abyss and Martha Marcy May Marlene, and the latter half of this year seems to be shaping up to be fantastic for cinema.

I can't help but crack up when I see Muriel Strepsel in the Iron Lady trailer - surely not the reaction they're after. Not to mention poor use of the Moon soundtrack. And not much of Scorcese's previous work leads me to believe he's any better placed than anyone else to make a go of 3D.

  • Comment number 89.

The new Alien movie, "Prometheus". "John Carter"; indeed it would be good if they could make a film version of "The Night Land"!

  • Comment number 90.

Just watched the new trailer for 'The Muppets'. Looks hilarious! Although, I was ever so slightly disturbed by that scene in the back of the limo with the hideous Gonzo all powder blue, blonde-rinsed, pearls and scary lipstick... wait a minute. I take that back. Apparently it's 'The Iron Lady'.

  • Comment number 91.

Take Shelter will knock you out, one of the year's best definitely. Shannon is great and Chastain is, if anything, even greater. However the trailer shows you far too much of the movie (and is, like most trailers, misleading).

  • Comment number 92.

This is EXCLUDING films coming out after December, bearing in mind that there are several bigguns coming out next year...

Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows (v surprized how enjoyable last one was, as a Ritchie-hater; WHY IS STEPHEN FRY NOT IN THE TRAILER??!!)

A Dangerous Method (release date?) - shame about Ikea!

We Need To Talk About Kevin

The Woman in Black (more curiosity than anything - play TERRIFYING; will either be fantastic or extremely mediocre)

MI4: Ghost Protocol (film could be fun or mediocre and noisy, but great cast including the brilliant Simon Pegg)

Another Earth (think I heard some interesting discussion about it)

    Dream House

The Deep Blue Sea (not sure but Mark did love his last works)

We Were Here (documentary about arrival and rise of AIDS in San Francisco - could be interesting but as long as not too 'hollywood emotional struggle')

Resistance (includes Michael Sheen! also Andrea Risebrough who is a fantastic actress)

Take Shelter (Shannon and CHastain together shoudl be good)

    50/50 (maybe, maybe not)

Moneyball - again, good cast but risks being bit typical - the low, the steady rise, the problem event, the build-up, the win - NOT A SPOILER IV NO REAL IDEA OF ENDING but just potential flaw.

My Week With Marilyn (great cast - could be interesting viewing)

    Snowtown

(Loved Animal Kingdom, and this looks in a similar vane, so will be interesting to compare)

    Die verlorene Zeit

Black Pond (don't know much about it yet)

The Awakening (Rebeccah Hall, Imelda STaunton etc)

Also some new ones you already mentioned: Dragon Tattoo (N.B. I am an Asperger's sufferer and the Lisbeth character means a lot to me as does trilogy, and the FIRST of the last film trilogy was incredible so I was dubious, but hate to say I got excited seeing the trailer), Wuthering Heights, Breaking Dawn Part 1 (lots of 'dodgy ground' in previous ones but Eclipse w David Slade at helm was huge leap up, so shame he's not there but trailer looks 'cinematically' quite exciting, though hopefully they tone down the language n book - not swearing but it SO PAINFULLY TEEN-LITERAL IT MAKES YOUR SKIN CRAWL!), TIN TIN (Just look at the technology, the amazing cast ensemble and the people behind it - just hope it's not another 'Alice in Wonderland' i.e. promise of something truly great but crushing disappointment in the end)

  • Comment number 93.

shocked at the lack of people not mentioning 'Prometheus'

and i thought this was a film blog

    come on guys

  • Comment number 94.

as for before christmas - take shelter, war horse and in time are the only ones that touch my curiosity

    can timberlake do an eminem?

  • Comment number 95.

See Le Havre. If you haven't seen an Aki Kaurismäki film, it's just brilliantly directed with a style that is textbook Kaurismäki. Lots of detail. No (?) camera movement, just changes shot. Unusually, it is in French. Hopefully it will win an Oscar. The Man without a Past (2002) should have won. As Jim Jarmusch said "Kaurismäki puts the dead in deadpan".

  • Comment number 96.

Agreed- the best films are the ones that surprise you, and the ones you don't see coming. With that in mind, all of the upcoming films I really want to see are out right at the end of the year- Fincher's Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes 2 and Mission Impossible 4. The latter is largely for Brad Bird, making his live-action debut, and having quite liked MI3. Surprised that Sherlock 2 isn't on your radar, after the first one.

Oh, and I'm hoping that Tintin will be good- love Spielberg when he's on form, and the script ought to be amazing, between Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish and Steven Moffat.

  • Comment number 97.

Excuse me, Dr, but I am very surprised that, given your admiration for the man, you have not mentioned Cronenberg's forthcoming 'A Dangersou Method'. I detect a Top 5 entry personally, but we shall see. Regardless, it's good to see cinema looking up after such a sad summer, don't you think?

  • Comment number 98.

three musketeers will be the worst of the year

  • Comment number 99.

So far I am probably most looking forward to The Artist, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, A Dangerous Method (the new Cronenberg!), The Descendants (the new Alexander Payne!), Tin Tin, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. And I am vaguely curious about Ides of March, and the new Polanski film Carnage.

  • Comment number 100.

Great blog post. I recently saw a trailer for a spanish film called The Last Circus. It looked visually amazing and reminded me of photographs by Hanspeter Schneider of modern day side show performers.

I hope it doesn't disapoint and see it at my locat art house, the Warwick Art centre.
