Talkin' 'bout my Guy

My encomium to the unlikely eventuality of a good movie from the former purveyor of Lock, Stock, Snatch, Revolver and RocknRoll has provoked nothing less than a torrent of comment from your good selves.

Might as well post here as anywhere else.

    Dear Dr Kermode,

Now that Jonathan Ross has decided to quit the BBC, is there any chance we may see you helming Film 2010 on BBC1 next year? Personally I've rarely been able to revisit what used to be one of my favourite programmes since Barry Norman was clumsily and pointlessly retired. Be nice to have some pith and insight back instead of Rosso's peculiarly shallow brand of filmic soft soap. Plus one always ends up waiting for him to drop a double-entendre bomb.

Keep up the good work, natch.

  • Comment number 2.

Poor old Mark. Lucky your skin is as thick as your quiff. I thought Sherlock Holmes was great fun but I was the only one laughing in the cinema.

  • Comment number 3.

If you take up the Film 2010 residency change the flippin' format. The review to camera is so mind-numbingly dull; get someone in to argue with, someone who really understands film. (not Mayo)

  • Comment number 4.

I liked it but I do wonder if it wasn't a cynical stab at an Oscar by releasing at this time in the awards season.

  • Comment number 5.

OK when are we going to see you hosting BBC1's Film Programme, now that Wossie has gone? I'd start watching it again if you were in the chair. I may not agree with all your views, but you know your stuff, make good telly and interact with the punters. Oh and you're not gratuitously filthy or as irritating as Jon boy.

  • Comment number 6.

Dr Mark, forget all this nonsense, there’s only one question on everyone’s lips this afternoon.

You are the UK's leading film critic â„¢.

‘Film 2010’ (2011, 2012 etc) is the UK’s favourite film review programme (I’m not including ‘Film 24’ as it’s not a programme as such).

The presenting job has just become available.

    So, the question is…

…will you be asking for £18 million over the next three years?

    Steve W

BLOODY HELL! The kids moaning prevented me from writing this question as quickly as I would otherwise have done, and someone else has got there first.

  • Comment number 7.

What did Guy Ritchie say or do that prompted At Home with my Guy? Did he offer freebies, spondoolies, invitations to his manor house, or worse?

    Love your blog!

  • Comment number 8.

The campaign has already started on BookFace.

    https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=263323440038&ref=mf

You know it makes sense for the UK's premier film critic to present what ought to be a premier piece of cultural output by the BBC. We all know it. But does Mark Thompson know it?

  • Comment number 9.

In the aftermath of the successful hate campaign by the tabloids, I'm hopeful the silver lining will be a proper film critic taking over Film 2010. Although I agree with your views less often than those of Barry Norman I have my fingers crossed for you.

  • Comment number 10.

dont be so ard on the doc. cant we all get along as its only a short life. im only 13 and i already feel like an old man. lets wait for the king to get on film 2010 to do some real proper reviews.

  • Comment number 11.

I dunno, I didnt mind that little skit so much. I mean it wasnt good, but it wasnt overly terrible. Just like (and I know i'l probably get a lot of abuse for this) The Transformers films.

  • Comment number 12.

Well, you did get slated, but I was only being honest(and I assume the others were too). And I'd rather be truthful than be a sycophant. At least you don't seem personally hurt by the comments and still said at the end something along the lines of 'You're wrong, toodles!' :D

If by any chance it's all a bravado, there's Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs coming out on DVD this month to help you feel-good again.

To add to the other topic of discussion - I'd be delighted if you presented The Film Programme too.

  • Comment number 13.

I personally though that video was absolutely hilarious.

  • Comment number 14.

agree Kermode would be great on film 2010, it would be great to have somebody who had knowlage and an opinon.

we need to start and lobby the BBC any idea who we write to

  • Comment number 15.

I too think that Dr K would be a good choice for Film 2010. However as it is currently, it would need a change in format. We still need those rantathons that Kermode is famous for, but I fear that Film 2010 will not be that sort of a programme.

  • Comment number 16.

'Opinions are like a**holes', my dad used to say, 'cause everybody has one.'

  • Comment number 17.

    I quite liked it.

  • Comment number 18.

correct...Dr. Max Headroom for Film 2010!...

  • Comment number 19.

Good on you, Mark! And I'm another one hoping you might be let loose on Film 2010. I might start watching it again if that happened. Sadly, I doubt your paymasters at the BEEB have either the imagination or the wit to invite you to take the reins. Alas.

  • Comment number 20.

Have you seen what's coming out this year?

This looks like the year of the Cage. Nic Cage, your favourite actor of all time, is in no less than 3 potentially bad movies!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice, is a a live action re-imagining of the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment in Disney's Fantasia, Nic Cage and his young apprentice protect the city of New York from lots of exploding CGI effects.

Kick-Ass, is about an 11 year old vigilante that swears alot (says the C word in the unrated trailer), whilst killing bad guys in a very violent Matrix slo mow way, and Nic plays her vigilante father.

Season of the Witch, Nic plays a 14th century Crusader, who transports an accused witch to a remote abbey to perform a ritual to end the plague that's devastated the country, and all CGI hell breaks loose.

I will be looking forward to your rants on all three films this year.

  • Comment number 21.

Dr. Kermode for Film 2010/11/12 etc!!

  • Comment number 22.

Paddy Power already has Doctor Kermode at odds of 1/3 as the new host of F201X; Graham Norton randomly at 9/4; and Barry Norman at 18/1 ...

  • Comment number 23.

I would love to see Doctor Mark Kermode at the front of Film 2010. It would need a slight tweak in format to accommodate Mark's passionate stylings but the show would benefit greatly from Mark's insight.

I loved J Ross, but it didn't make me seek the programme out and tune in. A new Kermode emblazoned show would!

  • Comment number 24.

I don't get what all the fuss is about, I thought it was quite funny...

  • Comment number 25.

Surely Film '10 (haven't we got over the 2000 thing yet?) is too straight laced for Kermode? He'd have to reign in everything we like about his opinions.

Now, if you were to change it to a three-man panel discussion/argument about each film we may have a plan. However BBC1 will want the standard clip-interview-criticism programme as it's the starting point of film-programme output – it is supposed to be a simple weekly review piece after all, not in-depth discussion of film.

Ross always managed it pretty well, in fact his serious disregard for some films was more powerful because you expected his sycophant-pervert persona from other shows to creep in – your problem, not his.

Whatever the format surely they've got realise it can't take breaks during the year. More reason to get in four or five rotating hosts, three on a programme every week being irritated by each others opinions. There are enough film reviewists mooching across the multiverse of BBC's output, make use of them.

By the way, loving the way we're regularly ignoring what Mark decides to talk about on these blogs and going our own way. He'll catch up eventually...

  • Comment number 26.

I also found it quite good. The good doctor always delivers, in my opinion, and these last few months have been been quite the treat. The (ironic) Dan Brown dialogue delivery was spot on!

Perhaps it was just too soon after the brilliant "A Transformers Christmas Doohicky" to warrant a fair review? Or there's my theory that most people are, well, dimwitted. Just about any Top Ten Films of the Week list supports this theory...

  • Comment number 27.

If Dr Kermode doesn't get the film 2010 job, the BBC have offically gone down hill.

    It makes perfect sense.

  • Comment number 28.

I liked it, acting wise it reminded me of a little film me and my sister made when we were 7 and 4 which put a nice big smile on my face. It was really rather amusing generally too.

  • Comment number 29.

Thanks for name checking me on your blog and saying you admire my insult. I was so happy when it came up I sent this link to all my friends. They told me to get out of the house more.

Anyway, seeing as the BBC have, unwisely, failed to contact me about the opportunity to host Film 2010 and have therefore lost my gargantuan knowledge of film trivia and journalistic experience (I used to edit my university paper's entertainment section and we had a readership of at least 17 people), then I will be happy to have Dr K host the show. Just as long as he doesn't try any more Guy Richie gags again.

  • Comment number 30.

Good God man...you actually used my opinion first in your fight back and you totally creased me up with laughter....you have totally redeemed yourself!

    Looking forward to Film 2010/11.

  • Comment number 31.

The format of Film 10 is kind of boring. They should hire DR K and another critic and go for an At The Movies style show.

  • Comment number 32.

I think that Adrian Chiles should present it.

  • Comment number 33.

So you make a blog that makes a cheeky sideswipe at Nicolas Cage, one of the best actors of his generation, on the poor guys birthday?! That is a bit low! Is the real reason for your disliking of the guy because you feel he butchered Elvis in Wild at Heart? I thought he did a pretty good job to be honest!

I don't know why you don't like the guy, he really has been in some great films:

    Peggy Sue Got Married

    Raising Arizona

    Wild at Heart

    It Could Happen to You

    Leaving Las Vegas

Con Air (its a comedy and he delivers a great comedic performance!)

    Face/Off

The Family Man (not a great film but his performance was excellent)

    Adaptation

    Matchstick Men

Lord of War (a severely under-rated film in my opinion)

Yes he has been in a few (ok a lot) of bad films lately, but he is a pretty diverse actor who gets an unfair amount of bad press.

  • Comment number 34.

I thought it was funny, not as hell, but it did what it was intended to do (if that makes any sense)

On the topic of Film Review 2010.

The problem with the program was the format, not the host.

Wossy is a clever guy, he plays his 'kidult' persona on TV. But the problem with the show was the format, someone talking to camera about movies with the need of 'expensive' promotional clips forces one to reduce the level of criticism.

I work for a publisher, in order to get content you make deals.

I would still love to see more of Kermode on TV, but it needs to be on a format more adequate to his banter.

Perhaps, maybe, just if... who am I to say anything?

  • Comment number 35.

Have to agree with all the sentiments. BRITAIN NEEDS YOU Dr Kermode to tell us about the great and wonderful movies being released each and every week, at a silly time in the evening. Film 2010 could be great if only it had a inteligent and thoughtful presenter who knew about movies (and I am not thinking about Paul Ross takig over here).

P.s. You didn't bring the funny.

  • Comment number 36.

Good evening Dr K, and all K-Bloggers.

I've never posted before, only perused, but I couldn't resist this time as it's just too exciting - Wossie's providential departure makes it your time to go centre-stage, Dr K. Do let us know what you think.

I do agree with the comments above though, the format needs a revamp. I like HrolfKraki's idea of it covering the whole year with no breaks - maybe something like Match Of The Day, with Dr K as Gary Lineker surrounded by rotating cinema pundits?

Just as long as it's not at the expense of this blog though - if it was one or the other, I'd pick the blog. Unless, there could be some marvellous amalgamation of the two... Wow, now I'm excited!

Needless to say Dr K, I'll be following you wherever you are. I just have to ask though, have you gone back and seen The Big Lebowski yet, as promised? That's probably my biggest bone of contention with you - one of my all time top 20 films and surely Jeff Bridges' BEST performance!

Cheers and keep up the good work - laters, Rick

  • Comment number 37.

Nooooooooo, I really did like that performance! Gah. Skit or not, I thought you were funny and absurd to an almost lynchian degree, even if that wasn't your intention. The whole Nicholas Cage thing was merely a joke I thought you would appreciate (and did!). Respond to humor with humor, right? Alas, it completely backfired, since I didn't take a look at the context and the other comments.

Nicholas Cage aside, I think you really SHOULD do more cameos, since you obviously are able to and have a terrific deadpan sensibility. Maybe have a word with Simon Pegg and let him write you into the third Cornetto movie? :D I would very much enjoy seeing you being eaten by zombies on screen whilst reviewing a comedy. (Yes, the last sentence was a joke. But the rest was not.)

  • Comment number 38.

The sketch was fine - not the funniest ever from Dr K, but not cerainly not worth the amount of blog space so far afforded it.

    I agree - Dr K for Film 2010 etc. with a change of format . . .

Where can I sign the petition?

  • Comment number 39.

I can't see the good Doctor doing Film (insert year here) for a few reasons, he should be first choice but its a profitable world we live in.

The BBC manage to get interviews with major stars and directors for its flagship film show because Jonathan Ross became well trained in how to ask questions without getting up publicists noses. The same was true of Friday Night With, Tom Cruise for example was never going to appear on that show unless his PR people knew Ross was only going to ask very boring questions.

For the very reasons I watch the Doctor he will not fit into this mould, in that I suspect he has too much of an urge to ask interesting and probing questions in interviews. Also, I have only seen the Doctor interview directors or actors he genuinely likes.

Imagine The Doctor vs Michael Bay, alas the Hollywood PR machine would never allow it.

  • Comment number 40.

Personally I'd favour a kind of visual scrapbook format which includes reports like the ones Dr K does for The Culture Show, reviews films and edited in directly from Five Live with Mr Mayo, and pieces about the business in the style of Moving Pictures/Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and excerpts from this blog, something free-wheeling and imperfect like a new wave film. Alas I think Mark's tastes, sense of humour aren't going to work in what's supposed to be the flagship Film show. Though frankly I've no idea who else they'll get. Probably Paul Ross.

  • Comment number 41.

I thought the Guy Ritchie thing was funny...

  • Comment number 42.

And also that first comment is right, you should beat your way onto Film 2010, WIT' FISTS!

  • Comment number 43.

Let's have the holy trinity for the new film show; the dream team: Paul Ross, James King and Chris Tookey.

  • Comment number 44.

WA-HEY! Newsflash : Jonathan Ross is finally sodding off from the BBC - he's not renewing his contract apparently. That means Kermode can finally take his rightful place on the 2010 throne soon - if he wants the job of course, and they'd be mad not to offer it to him, while he'd be a damn fool not to take it.

  • Comment number 45.

    Dr K for Film 2010, 11, 12....!!!!

(Jonathan Ross ruined this programme with his amateur reviews. Stick to insulting people, Jonathan, as that's what you're best at.)

  • Comment number 46.

Must agree with everything Jules Wright said (blog comment at 2:14pm on 07 Jan 2010). Would be excellent to see you helm Film 2010 (and beyond) Dr K, now Wossy is going. And don't listen to those silly people who complained about your Guy Ritchie skit. Yes, the skit was painful to watch, but we forgive you for that skit because we love you.

Keep up the (mostly) great work, and best wishes for 2010.

    Ad.

  • Comment number 47.

Well, what better way for me to start off the New Year than seeing the Good Doctor reading out my Kermodian rant of his own skit? Glad you took it in jest, as it was intended. I must, however, fully endorse you for Film 2010, I cannot think of anyone better suited for the role, because it's about time that it was reclaimed by a decent film critic for film fans everywhere. All the best for 2010, looking forward to today's reviews.

  • Comment number 48.

    Hi Mark,

I can't believe I'm saying this, but on Wednesday I braved the blizzards, ignored all weather warnings and risked life and limb to get to the cinema - to see a Guy Ritchie film!!

What's more, I actually enjoyed it. Fast-paced, gripping from start to finish... and a half-decent performance from Jude Law! Perhaps global warming is messing up more than just our climate?

By the way, if you're looking for a "Bride Wars Challenge" part two, I've already spotted an early contender for worst film of the year. It pains me to say it (as I too believe she's a wasted talent) but it's the new Sandra Bullock film, All about Steve (which could also take home the title of worst film title of the year). Eccentric crossword compiler falls in love with handsome camera man... BLEURGGH!! I have a feeling that all of the film's laughs are in the trailer... never a good sign: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnqowdktyLU

Lots to be excited about in 2010 though... Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland being top of my list of must-sees. Which films are the rest of you most looking forward to this year?

  • Comment number 49.

Hey, nobody liked Morny Stannit, either. Can't all be winners.

  • Comment number 51.

I think we'll let you off this time Mark, due to all the other fantastic work you've done. I do hope you get the Film 2010 job, just try and adjust the format of it, with another critic or film buff for you to banter with.

To ikonos44: that's yours, or someone else's, profile page, not the Facebook group.

  • Comment number 52.

    Dear Dr K,

Allow me to leap to your defence, for the simple reason that I got a mention for my Anchorman obsession last time I posted!

Your Guy Ritchie homage was witty, insightful, elegantly performed and lavishly filmed.

I eagerly await your follow up performances in "McG and Me" and "On Michael Bay", the latter marking a new collaberative partnership with the great Doris Day.

On a side issue, I also echo the sentiments of a lot of people who want you take the reins on the Film programme now "Wossy" is steppong down.

    Do not disappoint us please!

  • Comment number 53.

Email BBC1 rather than just posting here to promote Kermode for film 2010. The Beeb have turned their cultural shows on tv and radio into a marketing corner for Hollywood in the last few years. If Mark could shift us back into appreciation of film (including smaller pics), that would be great.

I want to see another year of Kermode's short version of the Oscars, with Grayson Perry commenting on the frocks. Entertaining and right on the button.

  • Comment number 54.

Nic Cage isn't terrible. When he's on (as in Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Leaving Las Vegas) he can be really great. Actually, even when he's hammy and terrible (like in The Wicker Man) he can still be fun to watch.

I wonder if Nicolas Cage's over-the-top, downright bizarre and very funny performance in Werner Herzog's "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" will change the Good Doctor's opinion of Cage. Have you seen that yet, Dr. K?

  • Comment number 55.

    To Whittingham_42:

'All About Steve' got absolutely hideous reviews in the United States. It was surely one of the worst reviewed films of last year and will probably be sweeping the Razzie Awards in March. I feel sorry for Dr. K and wouldn't be surprised if this year we got 'The All About Steve Challenge'

"Which films are the rest of you most looking forward to this year?"

    Christopher Nolan's 'Inception'

    Roman Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer'

Terrence Malick's 'The Tree of Life'

    Martin Scorsese's 'Shutter Island'

    David Fincher's 'The Social Network'

David O. Russell's 'The Fighter' (starring Christian Bale in what I hope will be the performance where the Academy will finally acknowledge his existence)

    Michel Gondry's 'The Green Hornet'

    Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'

    Ben Affleck's 'The Town'

Other that interest me are 'Toy Story 3', 'Iron Man 2', and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I'

  • Comment number 56.

I've just filled out the BBC suggestion form recommending that the Good Doctor become Jonathan Ross's replacement on Film 2010.

For others out there that wish to do it, go to:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/feedback/

    I did the following steps:

Step 1: Feedback type: Make a suggestion

    Step 2: About: Television

Step 3: TV channel: BBC One; Programme Name: Film 2010

Then just leave your comments, finish step 4 by adding your details (if you want), and there we go.

  • Comment number 57.

...actually rather liked his love-in with Mr Ritchie, though I think that Dr K's interpretation of Kate Winslet at the Golden Globes was much better..

  • Comment number 58.

    Name first

    Video subject matter later

    Just like Morrissey

  • Comment number 59.

Chris Tookey should take over the helm of Film 2010. We need an understanding, broad minded and not so politically correct man to present it.

  • Comment number 60.

I think it's mildly ironic that a member called burn hollywood burn seems to want the BBC to adopt a Siskel and Ebert format.

If Film 2010 is to adopt a new format it should be more akin to the culture show, using a number of film writers and journos to report on films with a single face anchoring the show and delivering reviews. It always struck me as odd that Ross would have an interview piece in which he would be very positive with the film's stars before panning the film as derivative in a review directly afterwards.

  • Comment number 61.

The good Doctor has a nice little agenda for himself, from his Friday slot with Simon to The Culture Show segments, so if he were to host Film (insert year) it may set him on the course to selling out his critical soul. But wait! This is the man who actually likes the Twilight saga films! Nevertheless, despite this glaring example of hypocrisy I can't think of a better choice. If Alex Zane, for example, is signed on by the Beeb, then I may never tune into or visit the website of the BBC ever again. Why did I even mention his name?

  • Comment number 62.

I thought your At Holmes with My Guy video was infact highly amusing. I found it highly enjoyable, and it seems as if the people who watched it somehow had the illusion you were trying to be sincere; I thought the British understood "dry" wit.

  • Comment number 63.

I think it's mildly ironic that a member called burn hollywood burn seems to want the BBC to adopt a Siskel and Ebert format.

Why is that mildly ironic? And what have Siskel and Ebert got to do with anything? Do they have copyright on the two critic review format?

  • Comment number 64.

I don't know what this witch-hunt is about, I thoroughly enjoyed "At Holmes with My Guy" and would be more than pleased to view it again. But then again, I also enjoyed "Burn After Reading"...

On the side note of Nicolas Cage, or as the good Doctor recalls to him, "Horseface". I agree that "Horseface" is a terrible actor of Roland Emmerich disaster proportions, but this is the question I would like an answer to, if the only "Horseface" films you had seen were Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, Adaptation and Lord of War, would you class him as a good actor?

  • Comment number 65.

Mark, do you own Moon on DVD? If so, have you experienced the same trouble many people have had with the release: that the audio commentary from Duncan Jones et al always plays over the movie?

  • Comment number 66.

    Mark,

We have endured your blog on the worst 10 movies of 2009 (no doubt the cause of all the recent inclement weather), as a preview to the Kermodes can you do a blog of the top 10 to balance out all the negative chi?

    Rob (Macclesfield)

  • Comment number 67.

I'm somewhat surprised by the negative feedback! I would assume some of these people are just enjoying sending these comments for the giggle on the understanding it wasn't to be taken seriously, but all of them?? Seriously, it's quite clear it was not supposed to be an acting masterpiece, was ironically hilarious I thought! Well done, Mark!

On the point of 2010, my main excitement on the notion of you taking the helm would be at not having to watch any more butt-kissing and hypocrysy. Rather, we would have somebody who gives honest opinion and is willing to call artists out on things! I may not always agree with everything you say, but I am eternally applauding your balls.....ahem!

  • Comment number 68.

@Dominic Okey: I own the Moon DVD, don't have that problem myself.

I don't suppose they do. Although they have copyrighted the "Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down" feature :-). They also had a "Wagging finger of shame" feature for those films that declined to have a pre-release for press review. That doesn't sound very pro Hollywood, does it?

The show has gone through a number of changes, most notably personnel changes dues to the death of one host and the illness of the other. The one constant seemed to be that the regular reviewers were almost exclusively film critics from the two main Chicago newspapers. I am not sure what that has to do with "Hollywood".

  • Comment number 70.

If Kermode is going to take over from Ross, he's going to have to get off his duff and start going to see all box office films instead of being selective about.

Not being able to offer an opinion on a top 10 box office film will not be acceptable (I hated Ross but at least he approached it professionally).

  • Comment number 71.

So professionally he had 6 weeks off in the summer and other breaks.

  • Comment number 72.

Wondered if you'd seen this on the New York Times website.

Good to know everyone seems to hate Bride Wars!

Really enjoyed the new 2 hour 5 live show.

    Dan.

  • Comment number 73.

Well the good Doctor gets my vote for taking over from Ross. They'll need a stronger desk through, for all that fist thumping he does.

  • Comment number 74.

I nearly commented on the previous blog, not because of the performance mind, no, it was going to be about how ridiculous I found all the pretentious criticisms of Dr.K's performance.

I mean really, someone actually compared it to real films and compared the performances to real acting! I love the way the good Doctor manages to surreptitiously stick in the old adage of opinions being like a certain passage of excremental discharge as there is often quite a lot of vacuous discharge on this blog.

As far as I'm concerned, any post is better than no post, and thanks Dr. K for taking the time out of YOUR Christmas to try and bring a little bit of joy to others. Maybe if other people were in the Christmas spirit they wouldn't feel the need to dump all over something just to fill their stocking with familiar warm negativity, like some hungry desperate animal that feeds off its own smug farts.

Please people, don't turn the comments sections of this blog into a youtube-ish F-you fest. People who are deliberately contentious (yes I do realise the irony but to make this point I feel I need to become one of you) just want to draw attention to their own puffed up opinion. Whoever asked Dr. K to leave and called him a "bequiffed bag of opinions" needs to just stop visiting this site!

Just so we're clear, anyone who thought it was not funny and said so, fair enough, but anyone who took it and themselves seriously enough to critique the performance should have a strong word with themselves.

Anyway, that's the end of that rant/apple for teacher. Slip me that tenner in the pub later Mark.

I thought the Guy Ritchie post was funny anyway :)

Will you be taking over Film 2010 now?

  • Comment number 76.

It seems a bit lame to spend the entire 4 minutes of your video bloggy thing by just reading out comments we could all read anyway! Had you got nothing prepared? Anyway, at least you read the comments which is nice!

I saw Sherlock yesterday, thought it was a bit poor, there are enough boring super action hero films out there already without turning Sherlock Homes into one! Maybe your expectations were just really very low.

Anyway, if you wish to read my comment out, i want hold it against you!

@holyhackjackson: I think you missed the point. I think the vast majority of comments were done in jest, and simply weren't meant to be taken seriously. Can definitely say that with regards to mine - I just wrote it because I knew it would be funny, not because I seriously believed that his video should be compared to real films and real acting. I doubt anyone on here genuinely wants the Good Doctor to leave our TV screens; most of us have great affection for the guy, because he's honest, opinionated, and - let's face it - right about film 99% of the time. You can see when he reads out his favourite comments, he's having a great chuckle himself. So, perhaps it's you who shouldn't be taking it so seriously. I think everyone was just poking some fun at ol' Big Hands, and it shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

@Craig: Thank-you for assuming my lack of intelligence as I quite obviously have no concept of irony...

I understand that most of the comments were in jest, and I like seeing Mark's response to people who disagree with his opinions.

My previous post wasn't just in response to that particular blog, just triggered by it. I just get tired of people being deliberately contentious so they can breath hot intellectual air on the blog of a renowned critic. There are only a handful of people who are guilty and I was referring to them, I won't directly address them as I fear that it would contravene the house rules. Also, I'm not interested in having an argument.

Intelligent debate is one thing, but consistently playing the devil's advocate is just annoying and counterproductive.

Anyway enough of this, I'm not bothered anymore as I know that everyone who reads this will care as much about my opinion as I do about theirs, which is as much or as little as rings true to themselves, res ipsa loquitur my brothers.

    No hard feelings eh?

    To holyhackjackson

I can't help but feel that my comment comparing the last video to Revolver was what you'd call a pretentious criticism. And yes, yes it was. However it was also in the spirit of fun and not to be taken too seriously, which was reflected in Dr K's tongue in cheek response video.

I enjoy 99% of the videos that are posted on this blog and Dr K is one of my favourite critics (even though I think I only agree with him about 10% of the time). However, just like Mark is critical of films when they don't live up to expectations, I think it's our duty to him to let him know when we think he's heading in the wrong directions with this blog.

From this comments page it seems that a lot of people also enjoyed the Guy Richie skit and that's cool because it's important that we all have our own opinions here and we also respect the opinions of others. Like you said it's important that we don't turn this place into one of those childish comments page on youtube videos in which illiterate idiots swear mindlessly at each other.

Anyway, just thought I'd post to clear up any misunderstandings.

@holyhackjackson: Sorry if it came across as if I thought you were stupid or something. I really didn't assume you had a lack of intelligence, was just giving an alternate viewpoint. If I didn't care about your opinion I wouldn't have responded. I didn't have any hard feelings in the first place, so no worries there :)

Doctor K for Film 2010!!! PLEASE LORD!!

  • Comment number 83.

I live in Vancouver, Canada. And recently saw Sherlock Holmes, which was an unexpected pleasure to watch. However in the theater, I was the only one laughing...I thought it might be just me, but according to my UK friend in Toronto...Downey Jr's english is incomprehensible to some westeners. I did not have this problem, but then again I understood HALF of what Pitt's caravan loving charachter in Snatch said.

The fact that Dr.K's little performance triggered this much of a panic, then i want to see another one!

I have exams tomorrow so the post is small....and i need to study :(

  • Comment number 85.

Kudos for a) still welcoming comment, favourable or otherwise and b) facing it and posting in it again. Personally I thought it was great - love it! :)

    Dr K for Film 2010!

  • Comment number 86.

I haven't seen Sherlock Holmes yet but as this board seems to have been hijacked in the name of promoting the good Mr Kermode to Film 2010, I thought I'd add that I agree with most comments here.

Personally, I think Jonathan Ross did a good job with the show and I've always enjoyed his reviews (even when I had no interest in the particular film). However, Mark would certainly give Film the kind of respectability it has been lacking since the days of Barry Norman.

  • Comment number 87.

To Mark and everyone else, you should check Danny Dyer's response to the impersonations Mark made in his rocknrolla review. It's up on youtube.

  • Comment number 88.

Guessing I'm the only one in the world who cracked up watching the previous blog then? Well, that makes me feel extra-special.

  • Comment number 89.

Well, I enjoyed the previous blog. I thought it was supposed to be an ironic look at the "show business world of loyalty and chumminess" and that the stilted acting was all a part of it. Surely it wasn't supposed to be "HaHa" funny.

Perhaps your critics should get a sense of humour for once and stop taking everything you say at face value.

Just wanted to post my support for the heir apparent for film 2010. Was a big fan of jonathan ross and thought the whole russell brand thing was ott. However, the ross is gone, long live Dr K. Someone who is such an authority on movies and clearly has had a life long love of film must get this job. Also refreshing to have a critic that you disagree with as much as you agree.

ps. another reason is the recently acknowledged flappy hands need to be unleashed on TV. Radio just doesn't do them justice!
