Today's Memory Tape comes from Andrew Galvin in Portsmouth who made this mix for friend Camilla to make her feel better as she went through her treatment. It's an incredible story and a gorgeous tape for a beautiful person. Here he is in his own words:
"I feel compelled to send a memory tape in for the first time after attending the funeral for my dear, dear friend Camilla Dickens a coule of weeks ago. Three years ago she was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer at the age of just 22, and following lots of therapy and despite very briefly going into remission, she was given a terminal diagnosis last summer.
These songs were one of several playlists I made for her, this one around the time of her terminal diagnosis, gathering together a set of songs I thought she would enjoy and might just help make her feel better when she needed it. She really was a wonderful person. Everybody came before her, and it was often impossible to find out how she was doing with her treatment, because all she would ever do was ask about you, and make you feel like the most important person in the world. Cam spread warmth to every person she met and touched the lives of so many people in her tragically short life. If you need proof of this, during the funeral the church became so overcrowded that a marquee had to be set up in the grounds where the service was piped out through a speaker. In the end we estimated that about 700 of her friends, family, colleagues and those whose lives she'd affected turned out, which must have been something of a comfort to the family.
Obviously, now many of these songs are now loaded with meaning that wasn’t really there when you listened at the time – All Things Must Pass, The Masterplan, Do You Realize??). She was also a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, and it was wonderful that she chose Everywhere to be played as we were all taking our seats."
