Our Memory Taper this week decided to make a mixtape for their colleague who was a real music lover, support and mentor to them. Emily Crawford spent a lot time getting the flow right and introducing tracks that her colleague might not have known. Some lovely choices in there!
“This was the first ever mix tape I made and it was a part farewell, part thank you present for a colleague who not only loved music too, but who'd been a real support and mentor. I spent ages choosing the tracks and getting the flow right and trying to balance what I thought he'd like and what I thought he should be educated about!
A bit on why I chose some of the tracks -
- Avalanches was the sound of summer 2004 for me
- "Stuck on repeat" is from such a great album, and excellent driving beat for getting you moving if you're at the gym or running late
- When 'Siki siki baba' came on at our wedding (playlist by my husband to be), Everyone charged onto the dance floor for a bit of traditional Serbian kolo dancing (hand in hand in a circle) as my new in-laws are from there. One of my happiest memories of the day
- The Go Betweens, excellent band, wonderfully jangly spacey guitars. They have now named a bridge in Brisbane (their home town) after them.
- Ed Keupper's "The Way I made you feel" was a must because of the atmospheric sounds and how he tells a story and you want to find out what happens. He was also the driving force behind the Laughing Clowns.
- A Forest by The Cure was the first song / album I got into as a 14 year old learning about music. I still love how moody it is
- 'Wide open road' was a definite choice because that is the sound of homesickness for me, the feeling of driving through big Australian spaces in the heat and glare. And the opening drums and chords are so dramatic!
My First Ever Mixtape
Frontier Psychiatrist by the Avalanches
Stuck on Repeat by Little Boots
Psycho Killer by Talking Heads
Siki siki Baba by Kocani Orkestar
Os Passistas by Caetano Veloso
Candela by Buena Vista Social Club
Jolene by Dolly Parton
Cattle and Cane by The Go Betweens
The Way I Made You Feel by Ed Keupper
Wide Open Road by The Triffids
In return, he made one for me that featured a lot of nineties dance type stuff, including 'Voodoo Ray' by A Guy Called Gerald...which I misunderstood and thought he actually meant it was a track by a mate of his called Gerald. I had no idea it was a classic!"
