Assistant Producer

Today’s MPFree comes from the remaining two-thirds of Doves, the Williams brothers Jez and Andy. And it feels like the brothers are revisiting their days as Sub Sub.

Following the success of Kingdom of Rust, the band decided to take a break; Jimi Goodwin went solo, guitarist Jez plunged himself into electronic music and drummer Andy formed a new band with some friends. Jez said about Black Rivers: ““Some bands are rooted in the reality of the here and now,” says Jez. “I suppose we’ve always been about escapism: searching for something. That’s the link, but I wouldn’t want to think we sound too much like Doves. The exciting thing about Black Rivers is that we had the freedom to go wherever we wanted.” There’s no news of an album yet, but this is a great sign of things to come. Doves are still in the mix somewhere, with a little Sub Sub thrown in, crossing with a seafaring Nick Drake and Portishead’s 'The Rip'. They’ll soon be making their live debut with two warm-up shows at Gullivers in Manchester on July 31st and Liverpool’s The Shipping Forecast 1st August, before heading to Kendal Calling on 2nd Aug and Belsonic festivals 18th August.
