MEMORY TAPES: 5TH OCTOBER 2012
This week's guest on Memory Tapes is Jamie Roberts in Manchester whose tape tells the tale of a trip...He writes...
"I'm submitting this not only because it's my last remaining Minidisc, but because it provided an awesome soundtrack to an awesome summer.
"My friend Dave (a long-time 6 Music listener) has always made great mixtapes and CDs and given them as gifts. Sometimes it'll be post-punk, sometimes rockabilly but almost without exception, it's new to me and gives me a new set of bands and singers to follow. He also never provides tracklists, so it took a while to find out who any of the artists were...
"In 2003 I packed up my stuff and went off to work at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, near the Pocono Mountains. It was hectic, inspiring, amazing but very tiring. What little time I had to myself, I tended to pop the earphones in and play one of my many Minidiscs whilst wandering the grounds. One of them was a mixtape made by the aforementioned Dave, scribbled on the disc was the name 'Tonka Speedway' for some reason. Almost everything was fresh to my ears and combined with the new surroundings, it meant that those songs were now an inseparable part of the experience."
