Ok, I've been living in the West Midlands for 11 years but hopefully, like Jarvis, haven't lost my Sheffield twang:

    1. "Isn't it warm?"
    2. "Please would you pass this/that to me?"
    3. "There's something unusual happening here."
    4. "Bon appetite!"
    5. "What's the matter with him?"
    6. "Has he given it to her?" I think this implies as to whether a male has copulated with a female...
    7. Pass
    8. "He has stated it does not belong to him but I strongly believe that it does."
    9. "How does he know?"
    10. "What is the matter with you?"

    Happy Yorkshire Day!

    Jaysus.

Hmmm well, as a Hully Gully or person from Hull originally, I should refer you to a tome 'Learn to Speak 'Ull', which is similar.

I agree with all of the above, cept for the following:

    7. He's not had it here OR it might be something to do with the cold ie Nesh
    9. A question - Haven't you got any ......

Yes yes, Owt Nowt Summat and Wot - Happy YD indeed.

Oooh, number 9 is possibly "Has he now?", what do you reckon Jaysus?

I'm stuck on number 7 too, come on then Mr. Cocker...what is it?

  • Comment number 4.

I reluctantly proclaim my born and bred Sheffield status for fear of getting these wrong. But here goes.

    1) Isn't it hot?
    2) Give it here
    3) Somethings up here
    4) Get it eaten
    5) Whats the matter with him?
    6) Has he given it to her?
    7) He's "neshed it" see you later - my immediate response is he's too cold?
    8) He says it its not, but I bet it is.
    9) How does he know?
    10)Whats up with you?

  • Comment number 5.

Yeah, good one selsley. The "sithee" in 7 is "see you later" but the first bit is flummuxing me!

  • Comment number 6.

is number 7 "he's never had so easy"?

btw, i was the oldest cub in the troop too. scouts looked too much like the army for my liking.

  • Comment number 7.

I think we need some clarification on the pronunciation of number 7. Is it 'Eesnesh'dit sithee' or is it 'Eesneshèdit sithee'? Though I've still got no idea, even as a Sheffield resident!

  • Comment number 8.

haha that's just made my day :) I would never have found out any of those. British accent rules! ;)

  • Comment number 9.

Gerritetten. My favourite ever. Though 'putwoodintoyle' is also very fine indeed... Oh aye. Happy Yorkshire Day everyone out there!

  • Comment number 10.

I am born and bred in Sheffield and number 7 translates to me as "he's bottled out, look!" Although the term "nesh" can translate as cold it can also mean "bottled out" ie. he neshed it means he bottled out. So adding "sithee" on the end means "you see" or "look"???? intereted to know if others agree.

  • Comment number 12.

Sorry, I was wrong. Number 4 is "Get it eaten" went back and re-read

  • Comment number 13.

The track list for the program is missing one of the more notable songs that Jarvis played today. It's "Night To Night And Day To Day" from the album Bestiola by Hidrogenesse, a Spanish duo that I had never heard before this, but quickly tracked down on the 'net. Hope this helps others similarly intrigued!
