In session for BBC Radio Scotland: Babe

Vic Galloway with Babe

Based between Glasgow, London, Bordeaux and Brussels, Babe are a relatively new proposition and have recently signed to the Moshi Moshi label, releasing what will almost certainly be one of my albums of 2014 in Volery Flighty.

The music is joyous and free, with an emphasis on Gerard Black's angelic, falsetto vocals and the afro-beat and funk inspired syncopation of the underlying guitar, bass and drums. Drop in a soupcon of electronica, a few acoustic textures here and there, and a certain Lauren of Chvrches on backing vocals and you have an LP chock full of ideas, melodies, rhythms and grooves... sounding unlike anything else out there right now.

Babe - Aerialist Barbette

Dropping into Glasgow's Pacific Quay BBC Studios to record a BBC Introducing session for me on Monday 31st March, the chaps were on fine form and very well-rehearsed, being current tour support to the aforementioned Francois just now.

Babe - Sunchyme (Dario G cover)

Using the traditional bass, drums, guitar, keys band set-up with help of a trusty laptop, they played 2 stand-out tracks from the album, Aerialist Barbette and the pop-tastic Tilt, as well as a rather absurd but brilliant cover of Dario G's Sunchyme... I love it when bands make the effort with a daft cover version; and this one suited them too! A charming, relaxed, inspired bunch of people, the session was a joy as you can see and hear for yourself. Search out the album - you won't be disappointed!
