Tip of The Week: Kirk Spencer & Marita - Gold

Kirk Spencer makes music that sounds like it's just got back from a gap year trekking around India and decided it needed to share it's enlightening cultural experiences with the world through the medium of electronic music. The result is a fusion of sounds, where bass heavy dubstep wobbles meet ancient Indian Tambura's caressed by Bollywood vocalists, all dancing round a camp fire on a deserted wild beach.

However, as for all good musical spiritual journeys, sometimes artists feel the need to go beyond the music to really express theirselves, so for his E.P 'Enter The Void' Kirk decided to release three music videos to accompany his songs, which were all beautifully shot on location in India. You should definitely check out the video for Raah if you want to inject 2:08 minutes of happiness into your day.

It's no wonder his singles Flying Through India, Hota Hai (another good video) and Enter the Void sound more at home on the BBC Asian Network than his local BBC Nottingham, but with Bobby Friction and Nihal both firmly on baord with Kirk's sound, Radio 1 have also sampled a slice of electronic India.

Not only is Kirk being added to the Radio 1 playlist this week, but he's also just played the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds 2011, bringing a unique electronic sound to traditionally rock n roll pastures.

See photos and videos of Kirk's performance at Reading right here.

This track Gold features the voice of Marita, an artist whose vocals have already been well recieved by the dubstep remixer elite of Skream, Kode9 and Shackleton, which could signal the next step up for Kirk's music. With the potential for some juicy remixes and collaborations, continued airplay from his many admirers, and with his BBC Introducing Stage perfomances and Radio 1 playlist slot behind him, you have to say things are looking bright for Kirk Spencer. Who knows where his music may take him, but wherever it leads, I'm sure at some point he'll find himself taking a brief stopover in India.

Discopolis are the first band to be plucked from the BBC Introducing Reading + Leeds 2011 line-up and thrusted into the limelight of the Radio 1 playlist. If you haven't seen the line-up yet, get yourself over to our Reading + Leeds website and have a little listen to see what takes your fancy. Remember, it all kicks off this Friday (26th August) so be sure to check back here for the very best videos and photos of all the wonderful bands, dj's, mc's, songwriters and 'lovers fighters dreamers seekers vagabonds rakes hellbound fakes steak eaters' that will be gracing our stage.

Discopolis will be playing:

7.55pm Saturday at Reading

7.45pm Sunday at Leeds

Both great times to perform; the beats, ciders and straw hats will be in full swing, the tent will be rockin' and hopefully nobody will have passed out and been carried back to their tent (yet).

Ok so before you all agree to go rushing off to our stage I suppose you're wondering who are these kids? Well, they're a young three-piece from Edinburgh who create electro indie house music using synthesizers, computers, guitars, drum machines and anything in between. The three schoolfriends formed in 2010 and began playing live in 2011, being selected for T in the Park's T Break initiative after just two gigs. This summer they've been honing their live act at summer festivals across Scotland, so expect them to be nice and warmed up for these two coming gigs.

This is their first single, Lofty Ambitions which has been released on digital label Eli and Oz. You can hear it here right now, all week on Radio 1, and I imagine at Reading and Leeds too.

Joseph JP Patterson was back on BBC Introducing in Scotland with Ally McCrae on Sunday, giving the lowdown on his favourite underground tracks this month...

3. Zeo Zeonardo Feat. Zoe – Back Into Time

My third track of the month comes from two of Wolverhampton’s finest, Zeo Zeonardo and Zoe. Zeo is an MC who has made a name for himself within the bassline music scene, as well as Zoe – who has sung on some of bassline’s most recognizable tracks. The two have teamed up on Back Into Time, a nice summery track about the good ol’ days!

2. Stormer – Cotton Buds

Stormer

Grime MC Stormer

My second track of the month comes from Stormer, who is an MC and member of well-known grime collective, OGz. On this Rude Kid-produced track, we see Stormer attack the hard-hitting beat, almost as if he’s battling against it.

1. TRACK OF THE MONTH: Discarda – Pleny Flows

My track of the month comes from Discarda, an east London-born MC who has been in and out of the grime scene for a few years now. Recently, though, Discarda has been getting back on his musical grind: performing at various live events and doing a lot more radio sets. On the DJ Myrikal-produced track, ‘Pleny Flows’, we see Discarda unleash that angry, hype flow – which he’s so notoriously known for.
SCOTTISH TRACK OF THE MONTH: Hector Bizerk - Fat Cat
The drum-heavy intro on Hector Bizerk's track, Fat Cat, won me over immediately. His delivery is extremely clear due to the nature of the production - which allows him to flow smoothly. The dubstep breakdown is also worthy of praise.

Tip of The Week: Two Wounded Birds - All We Wanna Do

I first came across Two Wounded Birds at Maida Vale where they were hand picked to play by Radio 1 and NME as part of BBC Introducing week on Radio 1. I filmed the band performing My Lonesome which immediately became my favourite song of theirs. That instantly deep groovy bassline, the punchy drum and cymbal loop, and of course the hazy guitar wobbles that made me think I was suddenly in Pulp Fiction, how could I resist? Add to that the somewhat haunting vocals of lead singer Johnny Danger and you've got yourself a track that sounds like it should have been made on the west coast sun-drenched beaches of California rather than the overcast east coast seaside of Margate.

The BBC Introducing family loved them so much they were invited to play Glastonbury 2011, where they put in an electrifying performance in front of a big crowd (especially for an early, hungover Sunday afternoon slot).

See videos and photos of Two Wounded Birds playing Glasto here.

This track All We Wanna Do should bring a touch of sunshine to the Radio 1 playlist, and we may even begin to believe we are actually in the middle of summer. Just ignore all the rain around us.

Tip of The Week: Worship - Collateral

Blog comments are currently unavailable. Find out more.

Dan LucasDan Lucas|11:58 UK time, Thursday, 4 August 2011

Dear aspiring musicians, if you want to make a compelling atmospheric entrance to your next gig, then watch this.

That's how Worship introduced themselves to Glastonbury 2011, and despite the crowd not being at it's fullest, I can assure you this performance made a big impression on the people who were there (Greg James even mentioned it during his BBC3 coverage). If you were unfortunate enough to miss out, fear not! For you can see more videos and photos of Worship performing at Glasto right here.

So who or what exactly are Worship and what do they do?

‘Worship make brilliantly moody, haunting music. Soaring vocals and tense, synth laden atmospherics give the band a genuine mystique and set them out as one of the most promising prospects to have come along in a good while.’

I've no idea who said that, but whoever did got it spot on! Because that's exactly what they do. Forming in 2010 they started off strong, playing gigs with bands like We Have Band, Pete & The Pirates, Esben & The Witch and Minotaur Shock, and being invited to perform a Maida Vale session for Rob Da Bank. However, not wanting to get ahead of themselves, in the Summer of 2010 they headed to Norway for a month to concentrate on writing, recording, producing and mixing all their tracks by themselves in a small residential studio.

Taking the time out obviously paid off, as they've since picked up support slots with the likes of Post War Years, A.N.R, Trophy Wife, and Does It Offend You Yeah? as well as playing Rockness, Glastonbury, Lounge On The Farm and Standon Calling.

This track Collateral is a dark, haunting experience, and is typical of Worship's sound. It might scare a few people off who have been casually bopping along to Fearne Cotton on Monday morning, but for those with a stronger stomach, this could take you into a dream within a dream within a dream type state for the the next 3 minutes 30. Just be careful you don't slip into limbo...

Please note: if you've no idea what I'm talking about here, watch Inception, although you still may have no idea what I'm talking about.

Gabrielle Aplin - Maida Vale Session

Blog comments are currently unavailable. Find out more.

Dan LucasDan Lucas|10:45 UK time, Monday, 1 August 2011

You may remember some time last October when we introduced you to Gabrielle Aplin, a 17-year-old singer songwriter from Bath who had built herself a remarkable following through videos she posted on Youtube.

Well, she's been keeping herself very busy since then, at the tender age of 18 she's released two E.P's, has played to a packed out acoustic tent at Glastonbury, played a series of sold out gigs all over the U.K, and all without the help of a record label. She's impressed us so much with her DIY approach, we decided to invite her to the world famous Maida Vale studios to record four tracks. We filmed her performances, and you can watch them all right here.
