Digital careers at BBC North: Recruitment event 23 March
Chris Condron
General Manager – BBC Digital, Sport & Children’s
Update: Please be advised that this session has been cancelled but events will take place later this year. In the meantime please visit the BBC Careers Hub.
BBC Digital is now the largest team at BBC North, with 650 staff working across MediaCityUK in Salford. General Manager for Sport and Children’s products, Chris Condron, reflects on how the department has developed over the last few years and explains why BBC North is a great place for technically talented people.
BBC North opened its doors in May 2011 with an ambition to make the site a digital hub in the North West of England. By April 2012, there were almost 200 Digital staff on site, working on things like the BBC Homepage and our TV and mobile platforms. In July and August of 2012, we delivered the digital services for the London Olympics, the first Games available across four screens - mobile, tablet, desktop and connected TV. We now have many more technology teams based in Salford, delivering products and services that millions of people love to use every day.
What we do
Digital teams work alongside the major content creating teams based here in the North. Working with BBC Sport, we deliver the Sport websites and app, which reach over 20 million people every week, while our Children’s products include the hugely popular Playtime and Storytime apps.
Teams here design, develop and deliver flagship BBC Digital products that people care about and use in their daily lives, things like the BBC iPlayer and iPlayer Radio apps. The BBC micro:bit, the pocket-sized, codeable computer for kids that will be given to one million Year 7 schoolchildren was born in Salford, and in the coming weeks we’ll also see a brand new iPlayer Kids app.
MediaCityUK is also home to the BBC’s Research & Development (R&D) North Lab, where colleagues are working on exciting and innovative projects like testing the capabilities of immersive video and audio and investigating the creative possibilities the internet allows for programme makers and audiences. R&D colleagues in the North also look after BBC Taster, the home of new ideas from the BBC, and BBC Connected Studio.

Our culture is dynamic, collaborative, creative and fun. We look to deliver high quality software, products and services that millions of people love to use, and we’re constantly looking to improve the way we work together.
I’ve been part of BBC Digital in Salford from the very early days. I’m hugely proud of how far we’ve come, that we sit firmly at the heart of the thriving digital sector in the North West, and that the next five years are going to be even more exciting and rewarding than the five that have just flown by.
