Creamfields: In search of David Guetta's Caviar

It's Saturday morning and we're currently mid-flight from Ibiza to Liverpool. Last night was a late one, DJing with Fatboy Slim, Jakwob & Tom Staar at Wonderland Vs Moda. For that very reason, we can't seem to string a coherent sentence together.

I've just taken delivery of two meals I didn't order, which has confused me somewhat. To my left, Andy's fast asleep against the window. He seems to have forgot to turn his phone off and has started receiving emails about discount viagra.

To my right, the previously vacant seat next to me is now being occupied by a pale faced women who appears to be on the verge of regurgitating her entire digestive system. I'm caught between a rock and hard place, but alas their is light at the end of this tunnel - and that light is the UK's biggest Dance Music festival Creamfields!

Two hours later and we're reunited with team R1 in the artist area of Creamfields, Vernon's in control of the music, whilst Andy and I are on the frontline, reporting from the thick of the action.

shed600.jpg

Rumour has it that the worlds smallest clubs has been erected somewhere on site, with a capacity of approximately seven averagely sized, non-agrophobic, humans. This seemed like an opportunity not be missed! Our expert detective skills (aka a phone call to the site Manager) soon lead us to what was effectively a silver garden shed. The owners of this micro-rave tell us the whole thing came from a random afterparty that lead to her and her friends (all dressed in 80's clothes) piling into her shed, for reasons we will never know. One thing lead to another and now they're set to be in the Guiness Book Of Records. Proper boss! *ahem*

Next on the agenda was a trip to the tattoo parlor. And by parlor, I mean bus, obviously. Few things could be more logically then getting a permanent drawing inked on your body, whilst semi-drunk at a festival. We chatted with some willing punters and attempted to convince Vernon to have the Family Fortunes logo embossed on his forehead. The latter was unsuccessful, but we made some new friends, so all good.

jaymoandyeating600.jpg

Our final excursion, before wrapping up the show and heading to our gig, was to infiltrate David Guetta's dressing. We informed Vernon and the rest of the posse in the studio of our plans, and set about our mission. Tension levels were high as we coyly blagged our way pass security and into the Gallic superstar DJ's backstage hideaway... What would we find? Oceans of champagne? Vats of caviar? A bucket of of shampoo?... Erm, no. All we found was a meagre selection of snack-sized confectionary, a fridge of Redbull and a free-standing mirror. Hardly the joie de vivre, Dave!

With our objectives achieved we headed back to base for a round of high-fives before we all headed into the night for yet another crazy Creamfields. And lets face it, when the lights go down the freaks come out!

Mission complete. Over and out.

Creamfields: That was AMAZING!

Vernon KayVernon Kay|21:08 UK time, Saturday, 28 August 2010

Well that was amazing. Listen to the show here and see the pics here.

We had Tongy, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Eddie Halliwell and of course own very own roving reporters Jaymo and Andy George wandering around the site as I span some dance tunes for an intimate crowd in the artist area.

vernonerick.JPGThat was that second year at Creamfields for Radio 1 and it was every bit as good as last year. Cream really know how to do it. They really do have the world's biggest DJs like Erick Prydz, Pete Tong, Tiesto, Annie Mac with her own arena, plus our very own Jaymo and Andy George. It's just brilliant.

One thing that I really like about this event is the demographic of the crowd. It goes right across the board with some old school ravers who were there back in '87 right through to your young whippersnappers who have grown up listening to Pete Tong on Radio 1. And there's something for everyone musically, from dubstep to trance to house to techno. It's all there. You'd struggle to not find something you'd like. It's a really stylish event to. The girls really dress up. I don't think I've ever seen so much fake tan in one place.

DSC_0299.JPG I'm off out to watch Jaymo and Andy George smash it in the Mixmag Arena now. Make sure you listen to the show and don't forget, we've got some brilliant shows coming up in the next few weeks recorded at the event. Make sure you catch them...

This week's show is a high-energy genre-defying two hours from the dynamic duo of Graeme Sinden and Joshua Harvey, aka The Count & Sinden.

They've been producing together for three years and have struck on a sound that draws on a diverse range of influences such as house, hip hop, ragga and rave.

This Essential Mix is no exception, journeying through Afrobeat, Carnival, Disco, House and Techno.

They are just about to release their debut album 'Mega Mega Mega' on Domino Records, features collaborations from The Mystery Jets, Bashy and Katy B.

He's one of our most accomplished house producers in the UK who made his Essential Mix debut three years ago when he was riding high with 'Changes'. Since then he's gone from strength to strength, conquering America as a DJ, nurturing his label Rising Music into its 5th year and landing the first Essential New Tune of the decade for his collaboration with Deadmau5 on 'I Said'.. Last Thursday night fellow producer Joe Gardner and I headed down to Space to record Zane Lowe and Mark Ronson back to back and the legend Grandmaster Flash for the Essential Mix. It was an amazing event put on by Come Together (the same people who do Carl Cox's night at Space). I dragged Zane & Ronson up onto the roof before they went on and asked them to talk about their annual back to back session'

Jaymo and Andy part 2

Jaymo and Andy GeorgeJaymo and Andy George|13:46 UK time, Wednesday, 11 August 2010

Jaymo:
I am currently sat amongst the crime scene formerly known as my bedroom. Think post-apocalyse Ikea meets abandoned launderette, and you're about there.

I'm trying to piece together the evidence from what has been a rather large weekend. Amongst the numerous congeries littering the floor, a selection of club wristbands, an empty bottle of vodka, and a flyer, for what appears to be a swingers club, seem the most curious. A visual analogy that appropriately sums up the preceding craziness, that has probably left many other bedrooms in a similar state.

Friday's Ibiza Rocks party was a roadblock. Nicola Bear kicked off proceedings, with Zane, Doorly and us following suit - between us I don't think we left one genre of music untouched. But Radio 1 is a family affair, and as Toddla T was in the building he made an impromptu guest performance - badman MC business!

Once Annie and Pete took control, to broadcast their shows live, things went from nuts to Nutella. As you would expect, The Swedish House mafia got mad love, their track 'One' is dominating dance-floors at the moment. For me, though, it was all about Aeroplane and Riva Starr, two of my favourite DJ's who've both helped pioneer the Disco and House music resurgence that has exploded in recent months.

We travel abroad quite a lot, and one thing people regularly say is how amazing it is that we have a radio station that supports cutting-edge music, rather than just commercial stuff. You kinda take it for granted, but events like this, with artists like this, shows to the world that the UK is still at the epicenter of forward thinking new music. And for that I am proud! Later that night we hit Wonderland at Eden, where we host Room Two each week. Yet another awesome party, and potentially where this bottle of vodka came from. In fact, it's definitely where this bottle of vodka came from.

Which reminds me, I need to tidy my room.

Andy:
i'll be honest, i'm currently sat on the beach at Sands (right opposite Space), with just a Macbook covering my incredibly white thighs, which, thanks to my extra long swimming shorts, haven't seen an ounce of sun all summer! This weekend has been mind-glowingly good, i'll pick up where Jay left off... (I think he's actually STILL in his room, 24 hours later!)

Saturday night was the turn of the world's biggest club, Privilege, to continue the party, and quite rightly take things to the next level. We arrived at about 1am with Annie Mac and our friends Lucy, Doorly & Nicola (after eating an unquantifiable amount of seabass & asparagus at one of our favourite restaurants Aura). Pete Tong was in full swing, broadcasting to the world via the Essential Mix, in front of the biggest LED screen i had ever seen - it was truly spectacular!

We we're due to start at 3am, right after Alex Metric, in the Coco Loco room, which is an amazing space right next to the main room (there's tree's growing inside and everything!). After a mad dash replacing CDJ's we began, and it was the fastest 1 hour 30 minutes of our entire life!

There was such a good vibe in there, and we could have quite easily played for another few hours! Shouts to everyone that made that gig so good, and sorry to those who couldn't squeeze in! (maybe also a slap on the wrist to the sound engineer who unplugged a CDJ on our second to last track!)

All in all, an amazing finale to another ground-breaking Radio 1 Ibiza weekend... We're going to be reliving some of the best moments from Ibiza Rocks when we cover for Pete Tong this Friday night from 9pm on Radio 1, so get involved! Catch you then :-)

Back at my desk...

studioedit.jpg ... in Central London and I'm still reeling after such an awesome weekend. In my opinion, the shows on Friday from Ibiza Rocks were the best ever start to Radio 1 in Ibiza in all it's 15 years of broadcasting from the island.

I got down to Ibiza Rocks at midday on Friday as we had to soundcheck some of the artists performing to ensure they sounded as good as possible live on the shows later that night. Then there was a few other bits to start while waiting for the show to begin. About an hour before we started my nerves were really jangling with anticipation and excitement but as soon as we pressed play on the opening track they disappeared and I just so enjoyed myself. As the producer of Annie & Pete's shows I'm in charge of smooth running of the whole show - that's the presenters, guests, running order and team. I was so proud of the eclectic line up we had in place that represented such a wide spectrum of music and really showed what a strong place dance music is in right now. On Annie's show Tinchy Stryder kicked things off brilliantly, Chase & Status ft Mali & MC Rage were amazing, Katy B was fantastic, Riva Starr brought the boompty house then Mark Ronson and band did an awesome 2 track performance including a medley of Groovejet's 'If This Ain't Love' & Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You'. Pete then started and the Swedish House Mafia were his first guests and as he said on air, I have never seen such a reaction for any guest at Radio 1 in Ibiza. During the last breakdown of 'ONE' they let off a confetti cannon and being on that stage looking out through the confetti to thousands of hands in the air is an image I wont forget for a very long time! Aeroplane had a tough job to follow on from that but he did amazingly well, as did Dirty South ft Rudy and finally Afrojack to finish.

Saturday night and I was producing Trevor Nelson's show at Mambo. We had slight CD issues before we went on air but thankfully managed to sort it out! After that the show went pretty smoothly before Judge Jules took over at 9pm and I went downstairs for a bit of food and a beer. Then via a very quick trip to Ibiza Town and Pacha I headed to Privilege for the Essential Mix. I wasn't working there so just spent some time in all the different rooms checking out the DJs. It's the biggest club in the world and so took some time getting around as the venue was full of around 9000 very happy people! I had never seen Underworld live and really enjoyed their set - Karl Hyde has got the moves!! Then a few of us including Annie, Jaymo & Andy ended up in the garden upstairs having a drink in the open air.

Sunday came and that was a day off so after a lovely long lie in the Radio 1 crew headed to Judge Jules' beautiful villa where he and his wife Amanda put on the yearly BBQ with the most gorgeous food and cocktails. We go each year and it's so kind of them as they tend not to get a lot of conversation from many of us (certainly not me!) as we're all shattered from the previous few days. Then I just went for a long walk and enjoyed the sunset before coming back home on Monday.

So what an amazing weekend - it went by in a flash but I so enjoyed it all. I cant wait to see all the videos and the full photos of Radio 1 in Ibiza 2010. Now I'm back sorting out my shows for this week and planning ahead for Annie Nightingale's big event in September.

I'm currently sat at Ibiza Airport...

... waiting for our flight home as the 15th Radio 1 Ibiza weekend is over. Friday at Ibiza Rocks was awesome; I really enjoyed Afrojack's set in Pete Tong's show, he guy really knows how to get a crowd going (He's also the tallest man I've ever met).

On Saturday I produced Judge Jules' show from the Cafe Mambo radio studios, which was a lot of fun. It's always a little stressful doing a radio show from a unfamiliar studio, but it all went smoothly. Doorly kicked off the show with a fun little Ibiza Cut & Paste mix. We had a guided tour of San Antonio from a great taxi driver. Tony from Above & Beyond was on the phone for DJ Relay. And then for the last hour of the (3 hour) show we did a one off special called 'In Ibiza DJs We Trust'. We had 12 of Ibiza's biggest resident DJs on the phone picking their biggest anthem of the summer: Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Paul van Dyk, Funkagenda, Erick Morillo, David Guetta, Matthias Tanzmann & many more. Make sure you listen again to that if you didn't hear it. It's a great insight into the big tunes you can expect to be hearing this autumn on the radio.

After the show it was straight off to Privilege to work on the Essential Mix at the massive Radio 1 party, which was immense. I was in charge of filming the event for the website - the film should be up shortly on the blog if it's not up already - and then I had to record Judge Jules' closing set from the main room which we'll be broadcasting part of on Jules' show this Friday. It was a long day, but I'm definitely not complaining; I loved every minute of it. And now they're calling my flight. Adios, Ibiza.

Hi from Trevor Nelson

It was another beautiful sunset at Café Mambo, a sight that I never get tired of. It's really special watching something as natural as that amongst a few thousand like-minded people. I did a running commentary during my show for everyone back home, I hope you all weren't too jealous.

I thought the show was pretty hot, my recent deputy, Roll Deep's DJ Target popped by with Princess Nyah who was on her 1st Ibiza trip. My breakfast show co-host also staggered in, Gemma Cairney-style, a bit worse for wear after a big night with me at Pacha. Jaguar Skills was on top form with 2 holiday mixes and my favourite song on the show was Nu Yorican soul 'Black Gold Of The Sun'.

To be honest the wweekend was so hectic that it was hard to take it all in. The Radio 1 party at Privilege was huge with Underworld. I caught a bit of Annie Mac's set as well, hung out with Jag and checked Defected and Bob Sinclar back at Pacha.

Day 3 was crazy. Changed hotels from the old town to san antonio. Then jumped on a speedboat to get to the Lovedough boat party. Then whizzed back like Bond to dj at Mambo for sunset. Got a 2 hr break and headed to Es Paradis for my party with Semtex, Target, Ms Dynamite, Tempa T, Aggro Santos, Faith SX and Princess Nyah. It was pretty big.

I havent been this wrecked for a while

swedishhouse.jpg ...as the BBC Radio 1 Weekend in Ibiza draws to a close.

Planning for the event started months ago but the real action started on Friday as the doors opened to the Ibiza Rocks hotel and the pool area where our stage is located was full by lunchtime! (the first live show wasn't due til 8pm!!)

I spent the afternoon planning the show and working on a mix and some edits. I arrived just before Annie Mac kicked things off with the sun still in the sky and the place went bonkers. It's the first time Annie and I had done this show with her kicking things off and it was nice to be able to walk around meeting the audience and chatting with the acts on the VIP balcony. We definitely missed Vernon Kaye this year. His enthusiasm is very infectious but his Tri-athalon sacrifice is for a great cause.

Got a shock bumping into Mark Ronson who has dyed his hair blond no doubt in homage to Duran Duran who he's been producing!! He had a great live performance with his band to close Annie's set.

I took over from 10 with the moon now rising and the atmosphere electric in expectation for my first guests. The Swedish House Mafia's star has been rising so rapidly this summer that you would have been forgiven for thinking Lady Gaga was about to walk out and sing Show Me Love naked such was the excitement. Some might ask why we didn't put the boys on for closing but such is their crazy schedule they had to catch a private jet to Cannes so we were happy with 10.10pm (local time). I can honestly say I don't think I have seen a bigger reaction in the 15 years of hosting this prestigious event. Utter madness !! Following them was a challenge but the crowd settled themselves down with some essential new tunes and then the guests kept coming, Aeroplane dropped some beautiful future disco, Dirty South and Rudi sung PHAZING with the masses and Afrojack proved that the likes of the David Guetta and SHM might have some competition real soon. He's large in more ways than one!

Just time for a San An pizza and we took most of the gang onto WONDERLAND @ Eden for an amazing party which finished at 7am.... long day!

Saturday and the fun continues. I managed to spend the afternoon at a friends villa in the far north of the island for a beautiful late lunch and then prepare for Privilege and Radio 1's Saturday night extravaganza. I had to start the live Essential Mix broadcast at 1pm local time which is very early for the clubs here. I was also perched on a platform about 40 feet above the dancefloor and stage floating infront of the huge screen. There were probably only 200 people in a venue that easily holds 8000! Respect to those that came and jumped around on the dancefloor from the off. I'm not sure how but then another 6000+ people (lost count !!) arrived inside 90 minutes. Pretty staggering.... After playing some of the seasons cooler house I pressed the crank up button for the final half hour before UNDERWORLD hit the stage.

Underworld are a seminal band for me. Part of the electronic/dance music story for a very long time. They have just made a vital new album that shows they have still got it and it was a real pleasure to have them play for us. Carl Hyde is pure electricity on stage.

Above and Beyond followed with a big reaction and then I confess it was bed for me before Jules wound things up. Room two was a riot with Zane, Annie Mac and Andy and Jaymo.

Another great weekend.

Of course the season continues here until the beginning of October and I'm sure there will be many more great parties to come but the memories of the past few days will resonate for a long time!

Sunday night and I was off to Vagabondos with Luciano to celebrate!

...I lost count of the number of people at Radio 1's showcase Privilege event, which is hardly surprising since there must have been over 8000 deranged clubbers in the house. I played the final set in the main room from 5-7am. Having been a little worried that I could persuade people to stay 'til so late, any concerns evaporated as Privilege remained rammed right up to the last tune.

Earlier in the evening I'd done my Radio 1 show from the studios above Mambo, with a direct hotline to listeners' shouts back in the UK... At Radio 1 in Ibiza it's always important to be mindful of the fact that listeners back home are in UK weather and not necessarily on holiday, so rubbing in just how much fun everyone is having in the balmy Mediterranean has to be toned down a little.

Today (Sunday) as a kinda 'wrap' party, all the Radio 1 folks came round to my house in Ibiza for some drinks and a poolside BBQ, unwinding before most fly home early on Monday morning. Later on I'm headed over to my weekly shindig Judgement Sundays at Eden, where I'll be playing two separate sets. I've stuck to soft drinks all day to pace myself for another monster Ibiza night!

Radio 1's weekend is the stuff of legends - hugely important to the local Ibiza economy and the showcase event for the world's party capital. Roll on 2011...

Have a listen to my show on Friday night from 11-1pm, when I'll spin highlights of my Privilege set and check back for photos here on the blog.

So Saturday on the White Isle...the morning (well afternoon) after! All of the Radio 1 crew are down at Mambo for Trevor's show. He's just gone on air after a small panic before the show when none of the CDs worked! So it was a quick burning session from our USB key and we're all good to go. Never an OB without a minor panic! Princess Nyah and Target from 1Xtra rolled into the show and all went without a hitch.

Everyone's feeling really happy about how last night went for Pete and Annie's show from Ibiza Rocks...from our end it went as smoothly as possible. My personal highlight...Swedish House Mafia, they smashed it. The crowd there were brilliant but goodness knows how they stayed out all day in the sun, they were queuing from 10am! But hopefully they enjoyed it as much as we all did and all you guys that listened. It was a long day and my feet are killing but it's on with day 2. So we have Trevor's show now, then Jules takes over from Mambo. Quick dinner and snooze before hitting Privilege for the big show tonight.

I'm producing Annie for the Essential Mix tonight between 0230-0430am, which I always love doing. So make sure to listen live if not listen again online!!

Right, back to Ibiza...

I'm Rhys, an Executive Producer for Radio 1 overseeing the shows coming from the White Isle.

Annie Mac and Pete Tong smashed it at Ibiza Rocks last night. Highlights for me were Chase & Status, a very blonde Mark Ronson and Swedish House Mafia complete with confetti canons and a cameo from Tinie Tempah. Great crowd too - well up for it.

It's BBC Radio 1's 15th year in Ibiza and this place still has the magic and the madness, where else in the world can a DJ drop dubstep into AC/DC and the crowd go crazy?

In all my years of coming to the White Isle it's still as vibrant as ever, it just needs more taxis!!! It's the big one tonight - Underworld, Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Above and Beyond live from Privilege, listen to the show and catch the photos here.

I'm off now to try and find the Leeds Utd game on the telly before Trevor Nelson's Mambo show..Adios

Essential Mix show day

Post categories:

Huw OwenHuw Owen|17:08 UK time, Saturday, 7 August 2010

creamibiza.jpg Hi I'm Huw and I'm the Executive Producer for Radio 1's Essential Mix.

A few hours to go until the live show tonight at Privilege! It's the biggest show of the year for the Essential Mix team and the one that gets the butterflies going as soon as you wake up on show day.

The plan of action today is to head down to the club in the afternoon for a soundcheck. Underworld are playing live tonight so it's vital that we hear their run through so that we can make sure it sounds suitably amazing on air. I'll check that the BBC OB engineers are happy and plugged in and that the all important ISDN lines are working! Then it's a case of grabbing a bite to eat and going back to Privilege before the doors open around 10pm.

When we get to the club, the first thing we do is get the all important AAA passes. Joe, one of the Essential Mix producers, will go and interview clubbers in the queue and edit together a package to play out in the show (have you ever been 'vox popped' in Ibiza?). I'll check with the promoters (Cream) that all the DJs are on the island or en route. Above & Beyond are flying in from Barcelona tonight, so for peace of mind we'll want to make sure that they took off on time. A few years ago, our opening DJ got delayed flying into Ibiza, so I had to play the first record!

Pete is on first tonight, so he'll arrive about an hour before we go on air. I'll meet him backstage and we'll go over the start of the show. Then we'll head onstage with about 15 minutes to go. I usually set up just to the side of the DJ booth with a small mixer and CD players to play out our jingles ('essential, essential essential...'). I'll also have a pair of headphones with Radio 1 on them, so I can hear the end of Judge Jules' show and know when to go on air!

And then second hand ticks round... 57,58,59. I press the button. And off we go...

Listen to the show tonight from midnight

Producer Tom gets set for tonight's show

I'm Tom, and I produce Judge Jules & In New DJs We Trust on Radio 1.
Getting ready to do live shows (or OBs, as we call them - OB stands for Outside Broadcast) from a foreign location is always stressful. You've got to burn off all your show jingles to CD (and Jules has about 200+ jingles), print out all scripts, make sure you've packed blank CDs, CD pens, all your recording equipment, and sort out last minute guests for the show. But I think I'm ready finally for tonight... Or at least I hope I am. Tune in to the show to find out!
This is my 7th year out in Ibiza producing shows for Radio 1, and the excitement I get still hasn't diminished. There's really something magical about the White Isle. Let's hope it lives up to previous years (not that I have any doubt it will). Tom

Hi from Jules

Judge JulesJudge Jules|15:13 UK time, Saturday, 7 August 2010

Judge Jules here... I arrived at Ibiza Rocks hotel last night and had to negotiate a humongous queue outside. Believe you me, I'm the last one to drop a 'don't you know who I am' bombshell on the door, but without that approach I would have remained outside with the locked-out masses. I played Thursday night in Tenerife, came off the decks at 4.30am and jumped straight onto a flight back to Ibiza via Madrid at an unearthly 6am. Not a pretty or pleasant experience for fellow passengers having an unshaven and snoring DJ slumped next to you, but I had to race back for THE weekend of the Ibiza season - Radio Uno. Yesterday I was at Ibiza Rocks Hotel in 'supporting cast' capacity, as my role in R1 in Ibiza doesn't kick off till tonight, when I do especially extended show from Cafe Mambo between 9pm & midnight.Following that, all roads lead to the world's biggest club Privilege, fora shindig featuring my Radio 1 buddies plus Underworld and Above & Beyond, who I follow on the decks for the closing set. As someone who plays every week in Ibiza throughout the 15 week summer season, let me tell you that the Radio 1 weekend is THE special one. It's the 48 hour period during which we all collect our finest summer tunes and think hardest about what we'll play to the musically clued-up masses.Once tonight is out the way, I'm having a BBQ at my house here inIbiza for all Radio 1 folk, and then (personally) the weekend concludes with my night Judgement Sundays at Eden. So, pacing myself is the order of the weekend, but it's not something that anybody here in Ibiza finds very easy... So wish me luck!

annieblog.jpg ... I am exhausted after a whirlwind two hours on stage at Ibiza Rocks. It was amazing! Tinchy smashed it, Chase and Status tore the roof off and new girl Katy B made everyone fall in love with her with her tune 'On A Mission'. Riva Starr kept it bouncing with a wicked party house set and then Mark Ronson (the only man who can rock pink baby slacks) and his band ended the show covering Spiller's Groovejet and Stardust's Music Sounds Better With You. Alex Greenwald from the band got crowdsurfed all the way into the pool!

Time for some pizza before my set at Wonderland later. It's gonna be a long night! See ya x

Hi from Producer Alistair

¡Hola! Welcome to the Radio 1 Dance Blog, kicking off its brand new shiny life by bringing you all the action from the 15th annual Radio 1 weekend in Ibiza. I work on the interactive team at Radio 1 and have been lucky enough to be sent over here to cover our shows over the weekend and to manage this blog. As an interactive team we go along to events to bring you online content in new and interesting ways, whether that's via this blog, social media coverage, photo galleries, or other new web technologies. Keep checking back on this blog for more updates from other producers and our DJs over the weekend, as well as links to shows, photo galleries from our events and some other exciting stuff. In the meantime, for anyone heading over to Ibiza or a music event in any spanish-speaking country this summer, here's a very handy list of phrases and sayings that will help you get by in quite a few situations, (even when it's all gone a bit Pete Tong!) courtesy of our friends at bbc.co.uk/languages :: Fiesta phrases :: Cool phrases

Hi from Producer Rachel

So the Radio 1 working teams have descended on the island for the Ibiza weekend 2010. That's production, press, sound engineers, website and live event teams. It's a tight ship with everyone working across the whole weekend. Becci (Assistant Producer), Rhys (Executive Producer) and I got the super-early flight from London this morning (Thursday) - wow it was tough getting up at 3.40am, I wasn't built for early mornings! Then today has been spent doing production meetings at various venues across the island including one just now at the Ibiza Rocks hotel, where we will be broadcasting Annie & Pete's shows from tomorrow night. We caught up with security, production, sound engineers and the venue manager to make sure everyone was happy with all the details, we also walked through the artist entrance to see how we are going to get people in and out of the venue tomorrow evening as we're expecting a huge turn out. The day before a big event such as this is always full of those tiny last minute details which we need to sort but as I write this I'm feeling hugely excited about Radio 1 in Ibiza 2010. I've been lucky enough to work at Radio 1's Ibiza events for the last 6 years and each time I get the same feeling of excitement with a few nerves thrown in too as it is literally the biggest and best weekend of the season. I feel very honoured to be involved. I'm already looking forward to that special 7pm moment when we press the start button on track 1 of the show tomorrow night and start Radio 1 in Ibiza 2010 as well as the weekend all around the world. Right now I'm going to watch the sunset before a chilled dinner and an earlyish night (always tricky in Ibiza!) as its a big big day tomorrow and I want to be on top form. Salut, here's to another year!

Kutski gets set for Ibiza

So it's the mid point of the week, the time I usually start thinking about music for the weekend ahead's gigs!! And I have to think extra hard this week as it's quite a big occasion being Radio 1's Ibiza weekend and i'm playing at super club Privilege this Saturday. I'm absolutely buzzing about this because if you know much about the music in Ibiza, and the music I play, you will probably realise they don't traditionally go hand in hand! But like a toddler determined to force a square peg into a round hole, I'm pretty confident I can hammer it home... The only question on my mind is do I play it safe and go with the oldskool anthems everyone will know and love, or do I give the dancefloor a music slap in the face with some 200bpm+ industrial hardcore beats? Do you think Ibiza is ready for the Terrorcore? What is the hardest record you have every heard played in Ibiza, and do you think I can set a new record??

Jaymo and Andy in Ibiza

Jaymo: I am writing to you triumphant. Triumphant in a battle! A battle which pitted me against several hundred tiny red ants, in a small dark room, in our house, just outside of San Antonio, Ibiza. Yup, it's safe to say we've aclimatised to life on the White Isle, even if this does entail frontline conflict with creatures that can carry 50 times their own body weight. We have a hose pipe, and dammit, we'll use it!

Having been here five weeks we've seen the island get busier by the day, but never before has the influx of holiday makers and general party people been so evident as it has this past week. Things are poppin' off and all roads lead to the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend. It's a staple part of the Ibiza clubbing calendar and everyone is gearing up for it!

Ibiza Rocks has put on some amazing gigs already this year, The Prodigy, Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal have all seen the venue sell-out completely, so add the Radio 1 X-factor to the equation and it becomes abundantly clear we're in for a big one on Friday!

We're DJ-ing just before Annie Mac goes live on air, so we're expecting it to be pretty nuts.

Then it's the biggie on Saturday. Last year saw Radio 1 return to the world's biggest club, Privilege, and man was it good! Previously home to the legendary Manumission, this club literally oozes heritage. It has an amazing sound system, incredible lighting and loads of places to general mess about and have a lot of fun! We're playing in our favourite room in the club, Coco Loco. It's a proper party in there, so will be ace!

Andy: It's been a long few days, throwing the best of what must be over 20 years of dance music into one pocket sized mixtape, but i think we've just about managed it! Ok ok... maybe we've missed one or two (i REALLY wanted to put in Southside Spinners "Luvstruck" circa Kevin & Perry "Go Large", but didn't quite manage it!) but that's not for the want of trying!

We were probably still learning to ride skateboards when the first chunk of these tracks we're going off to thousands of ravers on the White Isle, but that's not to say some of them don't have a place in our hearts! There's some absolute corkers in there that'll put whistles in your mouths, hands in the air and hopefully send a shiver down your spine - fear not though, Radio 1 in Ibiza is about to serve up a whole load more anthems this weekend, and maybe we'll do another mix in 15 years time!

Pete Tong, Mambo show - Ibiza

Post categories:

Becci AbbottBecci Abbott|13:43 UK time, Monday, 2 August 2010

mambo.jpgSo our 3rd show from Ibiza this summer went really well...I love going there...it's like a family. Familiar faces and places...plus with the sun shining it's not a bad place to work! Ibiza was noticeably busier than previous weeks - be warned if you're heading out I had to queue for over an hour to get a cab from the airport when I landed (tip - one of you run out and get in the taxi queue as soon as you land!!)

So we broadcast Pete's show from above Café Mambo in a studio that looks out over the famous sunset. If you have never been to Ibiza make sure you head down to Mambo before 9pm and watch the sun set... it's got to be done! When we broadcast over there it's just Pete, a producer (which was myself on this occasion) and a BBC engineer so it's a small affair, and because we have been broadcasting from there for many years now it always runs very smoothly.

:: Check out the show

After the show I went down to Wonderland at Eden to celebrate Pete's birthday which was great fun...Radio 1's very own Jaymo and Andy were also playing so it was nice to hang out with those boys. There was a definite buzz on the island for Radio 1 in Ibiza weekend...can't believe it's less than a week away now! Myself and my producer Rachel have a very hectic week ahead preparing but I can't wait!

Essential Mix - Nick Curly

nickcurly.jpgThe quality continues on the Essential Mix as we hand a debut cap to one of Germany's hottest underground djs, he's the man behind Cécille Records, home to Markus Fix and more - he's a regular at clubs like Watergate in Berlin and Circus in Liverpool and he's landed himself a Space residency in Ibiza this summer alongside Booka Shade and Tiefschwarz.
