THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC PART II

All hail Ross Sellwood, the Music Supervisor of Being Human who's in charge of the commercial music used in the show. He's back to talk about the sounds of the second half of the series. Prepare to add a few tracks to your playlist...
For me, ep 6 has the best soundtrack (Bat For Lashes and Rebekka Karijord at the front are the highlights) but i'm not sure there's too much science behind why they work, so I'll drone on about some others that are a little more strange ...
Ep 7. Yes! / Colourmusic over George's werewolf transformation at Parents' Evening.
Normally George is ripping himself open in a dark basement/cage/dungeon and we have Richard's tortured score and fx over the top. So we have all the elements - the dark menacing setting, the tortured character tearing himself apart and the claustrophobic agonising score - working together. The compound effect of all these elements working in sync really powers the sequence home to an audience. And very well too.
But this time we used the music to work with the surroundings and not the character to really give weight to where this was happening to him (i.e., not in the woods/hospital basement/house etc), not just what was happening to him. The music and George are doing completely different things this time and this really works to emphasise both. For what it's worth, I think this is probably one of the best scenes from the series, just really confident and very clever.
I first heard the track on 6Music a few months ago. What a unique and vital source of new music that is.
Ep 7. Miserere - Jeremy Summerly & the Oxford Camerata (composer Allegri)
It's really death-or-glory to go with classical music over contemporary drama - obviously it ramps up the jeopardy and tension and it's always beautifully crafted music but if you edit it wrong, you can sound cheap, over-cooked and possibly lazy. But the haunting choral arrangement and the way James cut it into the episode hit the mark for me. I hope most of the audience agree... but I wouldn't be surprised if a few didn't. But that's music. We should get Richard a choir to work with on S 3 perhaps?
Ep 8. Saved - John Herald.
Brilliant track to open the last episode and it seems to be an audience favourite too. But didn't come from me - James or Charles dug that out of somewhere (I still don't know where) and laid it in while I was still working on a bunch of other ideas that never got a look in. In case you're interested... Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode, Save Me - Aretha Franklin (or the Nina Simone recording if that's your preference). Or Max Romeo "Chase the Devil"... chin-strokers out there will know it as the reggae anthem that gave the The Prodigy the massive sample in "Out of Space". Maybe next series?
But Saved stuck first time. It gave a bit of humour to things, before we start the gruelling murderous assault on the rest of the episode. It sends up the cult members without bludgeoning the point, and most importantly people wouldn't have been expecting the track at all. Good work, damn shame it wasn't mine.
Were there any tracks you wanted to use this series but weren't able to?
We tried to use the Beatles in the 60's episode, but there was more chance of a snowflake surviving a flamethrower than us getting that cleared. I really wanted Roxy Music "Virginia Plain" to open episode 6 (for the flashback to 70's Kemp) but it was felt to be a bit lightweight for the pictures (the idea was that it's playing on Kemps car stereo then continues over the death scenes) And Blur denied us using "Tender" for the suicide sequence in ep 2... bit of an own goal from Damon et al. Their one mistake in an otherwise faultless career. But we ended up with Sigh no More / Mumford and Sons so it's all good in the end.
Looking back on it as a complete work, how would you describe the music of Being Human series two?
It's a bit more serious (in a good way) and runs a bit deeper. It's edgier and I guess that's a reflection of the content and tone of the series overall. There isn't as much comedy (but still some humour) and less of the indy-pop sounds (the Coral, Arctic Monkeys, etc ). We got to introduce people to newer or less mainstream artists. I really love the sound of this series and it makes for an awesome playlist.

I simply love so much BH's soundtrack!! it's one of the things that made me fall in love with this show. I agree on the Bat for Lashes being a perfect choice for that parto of the episode, and Saved just turned the whole bible guys thing even more awkward, from my point of view..
we've been discussing ages on how Yes! fitted George's transformation scene so I won't add anything to that.
I'd be curious what would Ross think of our blogger's playlist!

On the special incidental music (will we get another blog on that?? please?) - I keep going back to the ep8 scene where Mitchell is on floor after Annie goes - the jarring music there just makes that scene. Terrific.

And Carl as he left referred to himself as just being admin or paperwork or something. All a bit conveniently wrapped up - but again terrific drama around the relationships - as you say "he might not have been kind"
It also fits with the verdict on the toasted vampires - being already dead they didnt have smoke in their lings from the fire - so no murders to investigate.

And the story of the piece also fits well with the episode - its having at one point been considered so sacred that its use was restricted to the Vatican only, with a penalty of excommunication for anyone else, relates, in my mind, to George and Annie in a way hoping to be 'excommunicated' from their supernatural natures by CenSSA. Don't know if that was part of your thinking, though or the usual over-analysis here!

I did't see anything to lead us to believe that Kemp is a ghost, ok he was slumped on the floor--but just exhaustion, defeated etc. Remember in BH world they don't follow the usual rules, and turn things upside down and inside out, so I think a live and kicking slimeball like Kemp could easily be taken through the door. Deadlysecret - I agree about Kemp not being a ghost, surely if this were the case there would have been more backstory and less guess work - if it had happened in the middle of the series and then we found out he had been a ghost in the finale than it would be different but I dont think they would wrap up a huge story like that and not say a thing if Kemp was a ghost. It seems that element of the story has been pretty much wrapped up and finished - though I have been known to have been really wrong before! Lol!
Also, I completely agree with comment about BH not following rules or logic and I have commented many times before about how there is no rulebook when it comes to this programme, which leads to exciting and very 'out-there' story lines. Anything is possible, which is what I think makes it great. It is not at all predictable, which is what makes everyone speculate, and love the show!

Also wondering what part Daisy might play in the threat in S3. What would Nina do if she met her? I think she'd recognise her because she could smell her on George that time. I bet there'd be a fight!
Oh and if they've brought back Herrick won't she want to try the same with Ivan?

Acidalia - I think there was some discussion over Herrick's return leaving an opening for Ivan's arrival a couple of weeks back, but I think that there will be repercussions of bringing Herrick back ie: he will be mentally unstable, or unable to be a 'proper' vampire or something like that. The reason I think this is purely because of the whole bringing Ivan back thing. If Daisy had known of a way to bring back a dead vampire surely she would have brought back Ivan before even considering bringing back Herrick if they come back to 'life' completely normal and returning to be as great as they one were?
Also, I think that if Daisy were to meet Nina, Nina would definitely notice the smell of Daisy's perfume. And am therefore guessing there probably would be something of a catfight - Nina will win - no contest :P

Acidalia welcome to the blog, I don't think I've seen you here before.
I agree I think Nina might just get a tad upset at meeting Daisy :-)
Also she's had her wicked way now both with George and Mitchell, interesting when you think of the mischief she could get up to if they all met up.
I don't think Ivan will come back sadly much as I'd like him to.

As to the music, what I'd like to know is, are we going to get the 'proper' tracks on the DVDs this time?

Whenever I listen to sympathy for the devil by The Rolling Stones ( god I'm old) I think of Mitchell dunno why I suppose the clue is in the title.

welcome to acidalia and salbish and also to anyone else who is on thats new.
oh well i guys guess me and ewan are on our own with the hope that kemp was a ghost thought but as we all know and have said, BH is not a story of logic it is of fantasy and the supernatural so we never know what Toby will surprise us with next no matter what the story line we are obviously very passionate and obsessed.
loved the idea of the werefish or maybe mitchell should come and get you back and turn you into a vampfish.

I've only recently discovered the blog and kicked myself for not finding it in time for the S2 launch event, that looked like a lot of fun. I just hope they do another one for S3 and I can get tickets.
I do love all the theorising about different aspects of it - as much as we'd all love to wave a magic wand and be watching the new series already, we'll enjoy it all the more for waiting.
