What's Your Fantasy Rock 'n' Roll Band Line-Up?

Post categories:

Mark CooperMark Cooper|16:30 UK time, Monday, 10 May 2010

For the longest time our series exploring what it takes to make a great rock 'n' roll band from the floorboards up was called 'Fantasy Rock 'n' Roll Band'.

rockband_thomkiss.jpg

There was something about the notion of looking at the DNA of rock 'n' roll bands role by role - lead singer, guitarist, drummer, other one - the quiet one, the secret gel of the band be it bass, keyboards, dancer or whatever - that suggested that once you've taken the constituent parts of those roles apart and looked at what it takes to, say, be a lead singer ("Ego and insecurity" argues Lauren Laverne, "To be get laid, to get rich and to get famous" said Bob Geldof, "To have fun and change the world," says Bono), not only would you understand a whole lot more about every role in a rock 'n' roll band but, like any mad scientist, you'd then be free to recombine these elements to invent your own fantasy band.

But the more we looked into each role, the more we celebrated the great rock 'n' roll myths and the great practitioners of each discipline, the more we became fascinated by the extraordinary and singular fate that brings a great band together in a single place at the same time, to weave a singular magic that only those particular elements could hope to imagine.

The greatest magic of the bands we love is how they come from the same place at the same time and the journey they then go on together that is both the shape of their career with all its highs and lows and the music they make.

Imagine if Arctic Monkeys weren't all from Sheffield, if they hadn't known each other as teenagers, how could they have gone on the journey we've been enjoying these past few years? What brought John Cale from Wales and Nico from Germany to link up with Lou Reed in New York City and combine for that matchless first Velvet Underground album?

Rock 'n' roll bands are so often local affairs that begin in hitherto unheralded neighbourhoods and go on to write their local knowledge round the world; think what The Who did for the mods of Shepherd's Bush or what Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band did for Asbury Park? We'll be exploring this in particular detail in the fifth programme of series that is devoted to the journeys that bands go on together, to the understanding that a great band is also a great narrative, a story writ large. Even if they break up after one perfect album like The Sex Pistols.

Great bands come from somewhere and although I am as partial to the occasional supergroup as the next fan - if you count Cream and Them Crooked Vultures but pass on Velvet Revolver - it's the precise set of circumstances and the precise history which a band shares together that makes us love them.

BUT - and it's a big BUT, there's still something about breaking bands into their constituent parts that invites us to play with the heroes of rock 'n' roll like so many toy soldiers. So we'd like you to play the game. Ignore actuality, history, circumstances and accident and play God. Build your own Fantasy Rock 'n' Roll Bands like God was a manager and we might mention your line-up in the studio show that ends the series on Saturday 5 June. I'll have Richard Ashcroft on vocals, Johnny Marr on guitar, Ray Manzarek on keys and Martin Lamble of Fairport Convention on drums, even though he died in a car crash before the 60s were out, he's still my favourite skinsman. Over to you.

Very difficult to decide my lead singer. Could be Rob Halford, simply because of his vocal range.

On Drums, oh dear, a few here! Phil Collins, Ray Cooper, Neil Peart, Cozy Powell, Keith Moon, John Bonham...so, erm.... Neil Peart.

Lead guitar: Again very difficult, There are great guitarists, and there are great rock guitarists. Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame) is astonishing; but so is Clapton, Knopfler, Lofgrun, and the three in Explosions in the Sky.

    Mike Campbell then.

    Bass...Nathan East

    Keyboards... Rick Wakeman..(I think)

  • Comment number 2.

    Dave gilmour-Keith Moon-John Entwhistle-Jim Morrison

love the floyd love the who don't like the doors but morrison was a great front man.

    OR

    Johnny marr-paul heaton-Dave rowentree-Flea

loved the smiths and housemartins, paul has a great voice

Sorry, I'm still laughing at the 'Matt Bellamy made Prog respectable again' comment ... oh, now I love Prog & I like Muse, but really ... an awful lot of guitarists have been making Prog respectable for years, it's just that narrow-minded muso hacks and major national radio stations have been sniffy about it for years.

Thus, to reflect my Proggy tendencies, my band would be -

Neil Peart* ( Rush ) - drums and one-man orchestra

Geddy Lee ( Rush ) - bass guitar / vocals

Dave Gilmour ( Pink Floyd ) - guitar / vocals

John Petrucci ( Dream Theater ) - guitar

    Steve Hacket ( ex-Genesis ) - guitar / vocals

    Steve Hogarth ( Marillion ) - vocals / keyboards

I'd also like Bruce Dickinson in there too, but that would be too many vocalists, and would also spoil the Progness of my band.

Anyway, the guitarist list - IMHO - is a joke. So many great and influential guitarists not there, but hey - they don't play in bands everyone has heard of, and you can't expect viewers to be interested in things they can't immediately recognise.

*And if Neil Peart isn't mentioned in the next show I will be nay chuffed.

    Adios.

    :-)

Drummer and bassist would be Fito de la Parra and Larry Taylor from Canned Heat.On guitar,Mick Taylor and Rory Gallagher.

There can only be one vocalist in my fantasy band, the best singer these islands have ever produced, the one and only Frankie Miller.

  • Comment number 5.

For me personally there is so many possible line-ups(i listen to just about everything) but i feel this is the best

    Vocals/Bass-Sting(The Police)

    Guitar-The Edge(U2)

    Drums-Cozy Powell(Rainbow/Black Sabbath)

Mind you a close second would be

Vocals-Graham Bonnet(Rainbow)(This guy is seriously underrated)

    Guitar-Pete Townshend(The Who)

    Bass-John Paul Jones(Led Zeppelin)

    Drums-Stewart Copeland(The Police)

    My band would consist of...

Jack White (The White Stripes) - Vocals/Lead Guitar/ Piano

    Guy Garvey (Elbow) - Vocals

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) - Drums

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Bass Guitar

Probably my favourite musicians, but Jack White is my legend. I would have Kurt Cobain or Brendan Benson but i wouldn't have so many band members.

  • Comment number 7.

    Corey Taylor (Slipknot) - Vocals

Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) - Guitars

Mark Morton (Lamb Of God) - Guitars

As a child of the nineties I'm going to have to go with a modern selection:

    Singer: Jeff Buckley

Beautiful voice, beautiful guitar. Needs no introduction. Gone too soon.

Lead guitarist: Mike Einziger (of Incubus)

Amazingly skilled musician, not just on guitar. Can manipulate sound brilliantly and beautifully.

Rhythm guitarist: Aaron North (formerly of The Icarus Line, Nine Inch Nails now of Jubilee)

Fascinating to watch, and creates some brilliant noise.

Bassist: Michael Shuman (of Queens of the Stone Age)

Makes some fantastically dark noises and is a underappreciated musician.

Drummer: Josh Freese (of countless bands: Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Devo, Weezer, Sting, The Vandals...)

Possibly one of the greatest ever drummers, worked with so many ace musicians. You most probably own a record that he plays on.

  • Comment number 10.

my dream line up would be:

    bon scott vocals

    jimmy page guitar

    keith moon drums

    maybe Calvin harris on synthesiser

    hows about it/

  • Comment number 11.

Vocals - Sting , but as a front man you can't get better than Morrison

Lead - depends on musical style, but Marr/Clapton/Beck/Townshend/Gilmour

Bass - would have to be Entwistle/Hooky/McVie/Waters

Percussion - haven't the foggiest - Phil Collins?

If I HAD to choose, I would go for Morrison/Clapton/Hooky/and..er..Phil

OR, Sting/Marr/Hooky/and...er.. that Gorilla in the choccy ad

  • Comment number 12.

    Clapton or Hendrix on guitar

    Phil Collins drums

    John Taylor bass

  • Comment number 16.

Vocals, Rob halford (judas priest) easily the man is a god.. 4 octave range, still disgusted that a show that supposed to be about rock is full of pop idiots like morrisey.

Drums, Shaun Drover (Megadeth) / Kai hahto (wintersun). Hearing these two play is like jon bonham at times... not as good but god they make drumming sound good.

Bass, Roger waters (pink Floyd) Utter class, plus you need some floyd in here.

Guitar, Tony Iommi / Guilmor (sabbath/ floyd) These two men are just gods, yet the BBC shambles crew think johnny marr or some bloke from blur are better.. yeah because I value fearn cottons opinion in teh slightest?

Ryhtm guitarist, Dave mustaine (Megadeth) god this man is amazing, came back from paralysis and can still put most players to shame.

Ah well, let the BBC get more pop bands on and class them as rock.. Since when were oasis and stereophonics rock? Naw... just no they're pop bands.

  • Comment number 17.

I think this would make for an interesting line up

    Singer/front man - Freddie Mercury

    Guitarist - Carlos Santana

    Rhythm - Ron Wood

    Bass - John Paul Jones

Drums - Neil Peart - he can play anything

    ach perhaps not.

    This might kick a little harder though;

    Singer - Robert Plant

    Lead - Slash

    Rhythm - Izzy Stradlin

    Bass - Geddy Lee

Drums - Graham Lear - listen to Santana's Moonflower...

  • Comment number 18.

Vocals: David Lee Roth (Van Halen)

    Guitar: Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)

    Bass: Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big)

Drums: Steven Adler (Guns N' Roses)

Otherwise, I would agree with Chris: Led Zeppelin.

  • Comment number 19.

my fantasy band has got to be:

drums john bonham, lead vocals freddy mercury, rythem guitar james hetfield, and lead guitar got to be tom merello.

  • Comment number 20.

Am I right in thinking there's no keyboard programme planned? Shame in the BBC if so....what about Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, and most of the real rock n roll bands?

Some very odd choices to vote with too - The Smiths?!!!....so many other 'real' rock n roll bands to choose from...

    Anyway, rant over:

    Vocals - Freddie Mercury

    Keys - Jon Lord

    Guitar - Joe Satriani

    Bass - John Myung

    Drums - Ian Paice

  • Comment number 21.

    oh and flea on bass

  • Comment number 22.

Almost agree with Chris above, but would also suggest:

    Black Francis - vocals

    Joey Santiago - guitar

    Kim Deal - bass

    Dave Lovering - drums

  • Comment number 23.

    Top Choice

    Vocalist - Freddie Mercury

    Lead Guitarist- Mark Knopfler

    Drummer - Cozy Powell

    Bassist- Jack Bruce

    Second Choice

    Vocalist Graham Nash

    Lead Guitarist Eric Clapton

    Drummer John Bonham

    Bassist Roger Waters

    Third and Final

    Vocalist&lead Guitarist David Gilmour

    Drummer Ginger Baker

    Bassist John Ilsley

    Keyboard Steve Winwood

    Rythme Guitar David Knopfler

My Fantasy Rock Band would be:

Vocals: Wilson Picket and Maggie Bell (Stone The Crows)

Guitarists: Jeff Beck and Duane Allman

Steel Guitar: Glenn Ross Campbell (Juicy Lucy & The Misunderstood)

    Bass: Jack Bruce

    Drums: Billy Cobham

    Keyboards: Dave Greenfield (The Stranglers)

    Harmonica: Pat Ramsey

and me playing the Spoons and the Electric Triangle

  • Comment number 25.

    Vocals-Jim Morrison

    Bass Guitar/Back-up Vocals-Les Claypool

    Lead Guitar-Eric Clapton

    Rhythm Guitar-Kyle Gass

    Drums-Ginger Baker

    Key Board-Beethoven

-This is a fantasy band remember.

  • Comment number 26.

Drums: Neil Peart or Ian Paice

    Bass (+vocals): Geddy Lee

Guitar (+vocals): Donald (Buck Dharma) Roeser or Andrew Latimer

    Keyboards: Jon Lord

    Vocals: Rob Halford

In my opinion, Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult has been horribly underrated (perhaps because, by the time he became de facto band leader, they were well past their prime). Jon Lord is magnificent.

  • Comment number 27.

And Now for something completely different!-

    Jim Morrison: Vocals

    Frank Zappa: Lead Guitar

    Peter Hammill: Keys

    Jean Jacques Burnel: Bass

Guy Evans (Van Der Graaf Generator): Drums

    Tony Mcphee: Rhythm Guitar

    Captain Beefheart: Harmonica/Vocals

    Perfection.

  • Comment number 28.

    Gotta be:

    Freddie Mercury (Queen) - Vocals

Matt Bellamy (Muse) - Lead Guitar/Vocals

John Frusciante (RHCP) - Rhythm Guitar

Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) - Bass

Shannon Leto (30 Seconds To Mars) - Drums

I know it looks odd but i think that would be such a line up

  • Comment number 29.

Can't believe the guitarists didn't include Tony Iommi - the man virtually invented heavy metal. And what about Michael Schenker - the original mad axman? Also singers...Morrisey?? Bonio?? Jarvis C?? Rock?? You cannot possibly be serious. Since at least one of the selection criteria appears to be longevity then ok, how about: Ronnie James Dio (going for ages and still one of the best voices in rock); Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, Rob Halford from Judas Priest and the very underrated Phil Mogg from UFO?

Strongly suspect that what the panel define as "rock" and what I define it as are two very different beasts, the former being a largely sedated hamster vs. the latter - a huge, angry, psychotic rhino....on steroids.

Anyway with that off my chest, fantasy band

Vox: Rob Halford with backing from Simone Simons (Epica) and Liv Kristine (Leaves Eyes)

Guitar 1: Michael Romeo (Symphony X - musical and technical brilliance)

Guitar 2: Joe Satriani - nuff said, no one knows more about the guitar

Guitar 3: Alex Lifeson (Rush - fantastic, musical chord voicings)

Bass: Geddy Lee (Rush), Lemmy (Motorhead) both greats

Drums: Neil Peart (Rush) - acknowledged the best rock drummer in the world, but with Casey Grillo (Kamelot) or Nico McBrain (Iron Maiden) as good alternatives

    And finally:

Olli Vanska (violin) and Netta Skog (accordian(!)) both from Turisas for a bit of Scandinavian flavour. How prog is that!!

  • Comment number 30.

Freddie Mercury on Vocals - can double up on piano when the need arises.

Angus Young on Lead Guitar - sadly under-rated blues guitar player due to obvious clothing malfunctions but this band is all about entertainment.

Keef Richards on Rivvum Guitar - a higher power bestowed the gift of groove on Keef.

Keith Moon on Drums - Hugely talented as well as being as crazy as a box of frogs. The driving force of the band.

Gene Simmons on Bass - Fire-breathing demon bass player.

No stage has ever been built that would hold this band.

  • Comment number 31.

Ok am only 17 so might not have all the knowledge of the old band but I love Rock and Roll music expecially some the the oldies so my fantasy rock band would be:

    Vocals: Liam Gallagher (Oasis)

    Guitar: Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)

    Guitar: Angus Young (AC/DC)

Bassist: Cliff Burton (Metallica) - maybe a bit heavy for a rock band but he was amazing!

    Drummer: Keith Moon (The Who)

  • Comment number 32.

Difficult choice for singer, Jagger, Bowie, Daltry... But. Have to pick.

Vocals - Steve Marriot (small faces)

Lead Guitar - Brian May (Queen)

Rhythm Guitar - Keith Ricahrds (The Rolling Stones)

Bass - John Entwistle (The Who)

Drums - John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

  • Comment number 33.

There are loads of unsung talented muso's, but for me the following are pretty good:

Drummer - well, obviously, Neil Peart (Rush), but Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) for being able to hit the skins with relish. Any program about drumming that doesn't include Neil Peart just hasn't been researched enough.

Guitarist - Angus Young (ACDC)/Stevie Ray Vaughan for presence and feel, Van Halen/Richie Blakmore(Rainbow) for technicality, Alex Lifeson(Rush)/Matt Bellamy(Muse) for amazing musicality and Rory Gallagher for raw talent.

Bass - Dave Allen(shriekback)/Mark King(Level 42) for funkyness, Pino Paladino.

Vocals Matt Bellamy, Freddie Mercury, Geddy Lee

  • Comment number 34.

The trouble with the whole concept is if you'd like to do different genres; for rock:

    Vocals; Dave Grohl

    Guitar 1: Jimmy Page

    Guitar 2 : Jeff beck

    Bass: Flea

    Drums: John Bonham

but I'd be just as thrilled with other variants for other syles like:

    Vocals: Tom Petty

    Guitar: Lindsay Buckingham

    Bass: John Paul Jones

    Drums: Bill Bruford

you could go on for ages

  • Comment number 35.

I wish to register a complaint!

These messages that I read not half an hour ago. What's wrong with them? I'll tell you what's wromg with them: they all purport to come from 'Rock' fans.

Any true rock fan can only come to ONE decision when choosing their guitarist: the late great James Marshall Hendrix, the original and still the best.

    The rest of my line-up:

    Drums = Neil Peart (Rush)

    Bass = Mark King (Level 42) - now there's a leftfield choice!

Vocals = Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)

If, as some of you already have, we are including other musicians to form a supergroup, are are a few to consider:

Keyboards = Richard Christopher Wakeman (Yes)

Synthesizer = Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno (Roxy Music)

Saxophone/Clarinet = John Anthony Helliwell (Supertramp)

  • Comment number 36.

I have a series of "fantasy bands" that differ from genre to genre and since i have such a broad range of musical taste, i'd like to offer a rock 'n' roll band, a metal band and a technical/prog band

    first off, rock 'n' roll:

Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin - vocals

    Jimi Hendrix - lead guitar

Pete Townshend - The Who - rhythm guitar

Les Claypool - Primus - Bass Guitar

    Dave Grohl - Nirvana/Foo Fighters - Drums

    Metal:

Glen Benton - Deicide - Vocals

    King Diamond - Vocals

Marty Friedman - Megadeth - Lead Guitar

Silenoz - Dimmu Borgir - Rhythm Guitar

Cliff Burton - Metallica - Bass Guitar

Romain Goulon - Necrophagist - Drums

    Technical/Prog:

Mike Patton - Faith No More - Vocals

John Petrucci - Dream Theater - Lead Guitar

Yngwie J Malmsteen - Lead Guitar

Michael Romeo - Symphony X - Rhythm Guitar

Jordan Rudess - Dream Theater - Keyboards

Stephan Fimmers - Necrophagist - Bass Guitar

George Kollias - Nile - Drums

If you've never heard of any of these people / bands, i highly suggest popping onto youtube and having a look, especially in the technical/prog line up.

    They will blow your mind.

  • Comment number 37.

Picking a fantasy rock band is a hard choice to make but my band would be

Vocals- Steve Perry (Journey) Amazing Voice

    Guitar/Vocals- Eric Clapton (Cream/Yardbirds)

Rhythm guitar/Vocals- Ronnie Wood (Jeff Beck Group/Faces/Rolling Stones)

Bass/Vocals- Sir Paul McCartney (The Beatles/Wings)

Drums- Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters/Them Crooked Vultures)

Piano/Organ/Vocals- Benmout Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)

There is alot of vocalists here but thet can mean some sweet harmonies

  • Comment number 38.

I'm a sucker for a good rock show so this is going to be interesting.

Vocals would have to be Alice Cooper, no doubt about it.

Lead Guitar, that's tougher. Dimebag Darrell has got to be somewhere on the list, Ace Frehley as well.

Bass has got to be Gene Simmons or Steve Harris, possibly both because Steve Harris isn't a bassist, he's a wizard.

Drummer. There are many to choose from, I'm tempted by Rick Allen as with one arm he is still better than most. Though Joey Jordison, if he could bring his spinning drum kit would be a brilliant choice.

    So final line up:

    Alice Cooper (Alice Cooper) vocals

    "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (Pantera) guitar

    Ace Frehley (KISS) guitar

    Gene Simmons (KISS) vocals/bass

    Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) bass

    Joey Jordison (Slipknot) drums

(2 bassists may be unorthodox, but you can't call either of them just bassists)

  • Comment number 39.

Brian May on lead guitar - better than Clapton, IMHO

John Lennon on rhythm guitar - you've got to have a beatle in your band

Trevor Bolder on bass - Spiders, Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heap

Phill Collins on drums - none better

Rick Wakeman on keyboards - no-one else compares

Freddie Murcury on vocals - the power of the man's voice!

I play bass, so if Trevor wants to pull out ... ;-)

  • Comment number 40.

With me it must be as such:-

Drums: Without a question - Mikki Dee from Motorhead. Best Drummer Ever. I cannot believe he was ignored in I'm in a Rock and Roll Band, otherwise brilliant series. Also he has a brilliant drum solo (which he hates the idea of drum solos), you roll with and then get lost in the beat during the live version of In The Name Travesty.

Guitar: Of course Jimmi Hendrix. Swapping mike duties with...

Bassist: The Man, The Legend. Lemmy, from Motorhead.

With the odd song sung by either Alice Cooper or Rodger Daltry.

  • Comment number 41.

The ultimate rock band would simply be:

    Vocals - Freddie Mercury (Queen)

    Lead Guitar - Jimi Hendrix

Bass Guitar - Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age)

Drums - Keith Moon (The Who)

Freddie has the the vocal range with the showmanship required from the front man, mix that with Jimi's ability to make the electric guitar produce rifts which shouldn't be possible, Nick Oliveri's dark and moody bass and Keith Moons energetic drum rolls (and slightly mad nature) and you would have rock perfection!

  • Comment number 42.

Vocals, I know it sounds different, but Hayley Williams from Paramore, I love her voice and shes new and fresh.

Lead Guitar, Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother, great guitarist, got great rhythms, and just my favorite.

Rhythm guitar Matt Bellamy of Muse, would be great if we needed a pianist as well.

Bass Mark King from Level 42, I have never heard such great bass, he can do awesome solos, and totally show any other band member up.

Drums would be either Phil Collins from Genesis or Dave Grohl from Nirvana. Nuff said.

  • Comment number 43.

So they've just thrown up the list of the top ten, mostly predictable...but no Neil Peart? Hello? Has anyone heard of him in the BBC?

  • Comment number 44.

well that's a tough one but this could be interesting...

    Drums : Neil Peart

    Bass: Les Claypool

    Guitar: Alex Lifeson

    Guitar: Jeff beck

    Vocals: Steven Wilson

    Keyboards: Bernie Worrell

  • Comment number 45.

    Vocals..Freddie Mercury

    Guitar..Ritchie Blackmore

    Guitar..Eddie Van Halen

    Bass...Chris Squire

    Drums...John Bonham

    Keyboards...Jon Lord

Already perfect fantasy bands that are real...Lifeson, Lee, Peart (Rush)

    Plant,Page, Bonham, Jones..(Zeppelin)

  • Comment number 46.

in fantasy land, my best group ever wld be cozy powell drums, guitar, slash,[guns and roses], [bass]mark king,[level 42]. eric clapton, just because, vocals freddy mercury

  • Comment number 47.

In regard to the series, I'm in a rock..., the notion appears absurd to suggest that different fovarate band members could be cobled together to make a great band. From options given so far I had chosen Freddie Mercury (Front Men/Singers), Jack White (Guitarists), and Dave Groal (Drummers), though clearly together these people's styles could never work.

Having said the above...I realise the series is just light entertaiment and not to be taken seriously.

Furthly I wish to make a few notes regarding what I feel were notable omisions from the voting categories.

from singers, no Michael Stipe (R.E.M.).

from guitarests, no John Frusciante (ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers) despite him coming top of recent BBC poll regarding him as the greatest of his generation.

from drummers, no Meg White (The White Stripes), despite her image being used in the programmes title graphics and Jack being in the guitar category - surely his playing cannot be assessed without considering it in balance to the other member of band from within which he has done his greatest work.

Further to this, it appears odd that Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers, is not included, and no Reni (The Stone Roses), whose drumming I feel created the best drum grooves of the 80's, and without whom his group could not have sounded nearly as distinctive.

  • Comment number 48.

I am amazed that the choice of best drummers does not include Christian Vander, the founder of the superlative Magma. Without doubt he is the most skillful and powerful drummer ever. I saw him perform live back in 1975, and he is still the best now, even at 62 years of age!

Im gonna go for a kinda Maiden style Band!! ------

Vocals - Freddie Mercury[Queen] (is there really any need to explain this??)

Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vox 1 - Billie Joe Armstrong [Green Day] (Raw Power and energy! and just such a flipin good live performer!)

Lead Guitar and Backing Vox 2 - Eric Clapton [Cream, Derick and the Dominoes...etc.] (sooo many riffs its unbelieveable and a really good voice...too good to be left out!)

Lead Guitar 2 - Jimmy Page [Led Zepplin] (solo to the max :D)

Bassist - Flea [Red Hot Chilli Peppers] (one of the best bassists around today)

Drummer - Travis Barker [Blink 182] (strangely overlooked in the programe which is a shame seeing as i think he is one of the best drummers still alive)

Other stuff eg.Keys,Sax,Trumpet etc. - Jason Frees [Green Day] (one of the most versatile musicians around!! can play nearly anything and although there are probably that can play their individual instruments better i doubt none can play all of them to an extraordiany level!!)

If only Freddie Mercury was still alive this would all be possible!! :-(

I've had so many discussions with friends about this topic, and the one thing we all agree on; the frontman.

    Freddie Mercury

For everything else we argued, but here's my lineup for the perfect rock band.

    Freddie Mercury, Lead singer

    Yngwie Malmsteen, Lead Guitar

Jimi Hendrix, Lead guitar, backing vocals

James Hetfield, Rhythm Guitar, backing vocals (hey, Maiden has 3 guitarists and they sound awesome)

    Nikki Sixx, Bass

    John Lord, Keyboards

    Neil Peart, Drums

It's an odd mix, I know, but the combo of Malmsteen's ability to write incredibly beautiful songs, his insane shredding solos and arpeggios played at ridiculous speeds, mixed with Hendrix's equally good but different songwriting ability, showmanship and skill with a guitar would be an incredible match for me. Add Hetfield, the steadiest, hardest rocking rhythm guitarist ever, who has written most of metal's anthems, and you've got a sweet guitar setup to die for.

Nikki Sixx on bass, for me, is a choice not because of pure skill, but again, because he puts on a show, he has the look, he's written some of my favourite songs, and he is the quintissential rocker. The man has been clinically dead twice. He's indestructable.

John Lord adds psychadellic keyboard lines and the true classic rock sound of the keys (listen to Deep Purple), and Neil Peart on drums is an easy decision. Definitely the best prog drummer of all time, if not the best dummer of all time hands down, and his skill as a lyricist is unparallelled in my opinion. Add Freddie Mercury and his incredible voice, the greatest frontman ever, the crowd pleaser, to all this, and you have my ultimate rock band.

Everyones bands soo far seem a bit mainstream... I think I may go for a bit of modern musical talent! and im a bit of a drummer myself ;)

Vocals: Josh Homme (rhythm guitar, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures)

Lead Guitar: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars volta)

Bass: Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)

    OKKK I'd Sayy

Robert Plant (The might Led Zep) - Vocals

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Guitar

Jared Followill (Kings of Leon) - Bass

Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) - Drums

Two old, two new. I think that balances it out :)

And if you're laughing about the last two, check:

Kings of Leon - Frontier City

A live version of Broken Boy Soldier by The Raconteurs...

This isn't breaking house rules is it? :S

Vocals - Damon Albarn. Shows good versatility performing several different genres and is a terrific lyricist.

Guitar - Buckethead. Amazing guitarist, it's a crime he wasn't on the shortlist.

Bass - Les Claypool. My idol as a bassist. If he isn't on the bassist shortlist then this show is void.

Drums - Dave Grohl. Simple really, doens't need explanation.

  • Comment number 55.

Freddie Mercury (Queen) - A totally under-rated singer; try singing We are the Champions and hitting THAT note. Charisma and the ability to hold 250,000 people in the palm of his hand. He had it all.

Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) - He invented rock guitar. The first and still the best.

Neil Peart (Rush) - Whether it is 4/4, 3/4, 5/8 or 23/16 he makes it sound natural. Along with Geddy Lee he forms the tightest rhythm section I've ever heard.

Geddy Lee (Rush) - See above. Not a bad singer either.

Led Zeppelin - As a rock band they were the blueprint. Ask the musicians in the top ten lists who they'd vote for.

Reserves - Steven Tyler: singer (Aerosmith), Brian May: guitarist (Queen), Dave Grohl: drummer/guitarist (Nirvana/Foo Fighters), Flea: bassist (RHCP)

There are many innovative and influential drummers in the list - but the main man is missing - NEIL PEART. Maybe not mainstream enough but the daddy of the drum solo and the master of poly rythms.

How on earth can you have a telly program about Rock drummers and not mention Neil Peart of Rush- the professor on the drum kit and a man who can make a drum solo intresting!!

Mind you I'm shocked that there is no mention of Rush anywere, but looking at some of the selections from the experts it makes me wonder if they know what rock is?

Still here's my ultimate dream group.

Tbh it's impossible to come up with one general fantasy band so it's probably best to have one for a particular genre. Even then it's hard to choose one so here are my suggestions...

(rock/metal) Drums. Chris Adler (lamb of god)Or Tomas Haake (meshuggah) not just because they are metal drummers but because they are so technically amazing and mind blowing

Lead guitar. Dimebag (pantera)/Slash (GnR)/Eddie Van Halen. dimebags riffs are epic and slash and Eddie are facemelting

Vocals. James Hetfield (metallica) or Brian Johnson (AC/DC)for the corse sounding vocals

    bass. Rob Trujillo (metallica)

    (everything else)

    drums Phil Collins/ Chad smith

    guitar/vocals Hendrix/ Bellamy/ grohl/ Santana

  • Comment number 75.

Fantasy band eh? Well, here goes:

Singer - Tough one this but I'm gonna go for Geoff Tate from Queensryche. His vocal range and delivery are superb.

Drummer - Neil Peart. And it is shocking that this man isn't on the official shortlist.

Bassist - Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. Great bass player.

Keyboards - Mark Stanway of Magnum. A hugely under-rated band (why guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin hasn't been recognised for the body of work he has achieved is one of the great rock scandals). Mark can be as OTT as anyone and easily can play it atmospherically simple. A superb keyboard player.

Guitarist - I'm gonna pick two, one for essentially rhythm work and the other for the flashy stuff. For the rhythm section I'd select James hetfield of Metallica. For the flashy stuff I'd pick Joe Satriani.

There are many worthy people I've left off the list but that combination I think would make a fantastic band capable of any style of rock thrown at it.

  • Comment number 76.

Roger Daltrey - Jimi Hendrix - Keith Moon - Jack Bruce - Rick Wakeman

Don't know how well they would work together but if they could it would be one hell of a group.

Bass; Lemmy (because his Rickenbacker sound), John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Phil Lynott

    Hammond; Jon Lord!

    ROBERT PLANT – Lead vocals

[good range – from rock vocals full of originality and flare, to slow ballads. Also the right attitude and charisma]

    FRANK ZAPPA – Lead Guitar

[really musical. Could play long solos that weren’t indulgent or dull. His subversive personality always in the background, keeping the band on their toes]

    JAMES JAMERSON – Bass

[a strong musical personality and sheer ability. The bassists’ bassist]

    JOHNNY MARR – Rhythm Guitar

[in The Smiths he had to perform both lead and rhythm roles. As a rhythm guitarist, he would have the licks, the drive, the love of music, all going at the same time]

    DONALD FAGAN – Keyboards, Vocals

[fantastic musical personality and knowledge. A good second vocalist]

    JAKI LIEBEZEIT – Drums

[little known guy from krautrockers Can. He has technical precision, cut his chops in jazz, and was full of musical ideas]

Sorry but can't see how a program on this subject managed to ignore so may talented drummers in favour of the blindingly obvious or easy to track down for an interview.

Neil Peart, Tommy Aldridge, Brian Downey, Barry Barlow all deserved a mention. I suppose that's the penalty for being good at what you do but not fashionable enough.

    Rhythm guitar: Dave Mustaine

    Bass: Cliff Burton

    Drums: Rick Allen

Personally, I think the beeb should stop acting like rock ended in the '80s. Perhaps if they were to mention some of the amazing bands that are technically way better than some of the classics, as well as actually still recording new albums as opposed to releasing 'remastered' versions of the same thing. (AC/DC's Iron Man ring any bells?). Nile, Machine Head, Dream Theater, RATM, Trivium, Lamb of God, Chimaira... I could honestly go on for hours. Perhaps a programme at the end looking at where rock/metal has moved on to, as opposed to always just looking back. Is Matt Bellamy the only truly 'modern' guitar player on the list? Also, why are half the musicians featured on the programme not listed on the site?
