Why on earth is breastfeeding so hard?

Anne Diamond

Everyone’s talking today about the new government backed breastfeeding initiative. It's incentivising, or bribing (?) young mums up north to breastfeed rather than use bottles – by offering them shopping vouchers. But I tell you what, no amount of John Lewis vouchers would have made a jot of difference to me, when I was desperately trying to breastfeed my babies. All of them, frankly, would have died if they’d relied on me for food! I don’t think I have ever found anything so difficult, and so upsetting when I ultimately failed – again and again and again! If anyone had waved vouchers under my nose, it would have just upset me more. I find the idea appallingly patronising, insulting and I honestly cannot see it being effective. And yet still I have never been able to find an answer to the question that still nags me, over twenty years later, why oh why is it so hard for us humans to breastfeed our young?
