Is money corrupting churches?

BBC Africa HYS Team|12:32 UK time, Thursday, 1 September 2011

church congregation

Forbes magazine recently revealed that there are pastors in Nigeria who are so wealthy they have not one private jet, but two or more. These church leaders are amongst the richest men in the country.

There are many charismatic churches in Africa that attract congregations of thousands and have amassed great wealth: is it a problem that the individuals who head them appear to be enjoying such material luxury?

Do you think there is any contradiction between being a man of God and having a lot of money?

How should churches raise money to support their activities and pay their staff? How should churches use their wealth? What rules should apply when it comes to churches and money?

Yes. Money can corrupt any institution not just churches. I don't know about Europe, but the world's most Mega churches and multimillionaire pastors are in the U.S. - Nigeria's obvious role model. 1/2

I'm for prosperity churches as long as the wealth is been shared by the members and the community at large. These pastors don't need private jets when flying first class on commercial airline would do. They shouldn't be living lavishly at their congregations expense. 2/2

The bible underscores the importance of donating one-tenth of one’s earnings (e.g. Malachi 3:10) after which blessings will flow. As long as members of the congregation donate genuine money and are not persuaded to donate beyond their wish and means that is fine. Yet, pastors should ensure that part of the tithes must be used to help widows and orphans as that is a biblical policy.

The Churches have stepped in where government have failed. They have built schools, created wealth and created jobs. WHAT ABOUT THAT?.

  • Comment number 5.

Churches today are income generating activities and their leaders have come short of the glory of God.Jesus disciples all abandon their riches to follow him, but today, it's the contrary; people carry their riches to follow God

Money is the source of evil both in and out church. You can get money through different means, and the church is just one. It's high time government start taxing churches

Why are we criticising people who have endured untold poverty? Their prosperity now should be celebrated. All those rich Pastors have stories of poverty to tell if you care to listen. They are worth every penny they now have as they have paid the price. Learn to appreciate success.

Jesus gives a pointed synopsis on the "church" of His day, and its leadership in Matthew 23. God's Words for then and for today....it takes very little money to obey the commandment to "go into your neighborhood and share the good news with others (Mark 16:15) and for that matter very little money to fellowship with other believers.

As I read this and other stories about Africa, what strikes me is that there are some economies here, some countries, that can do well and to the collective benefit of their people if the people can stop their leaders from stealing their money and refrain themselves from willingly giving their own money to these Fraudsters who obviously are deceiving the congregation to enrich themselves.

Money can not corrupt the truth church of God but those who use it unwisely and out of God purpose corrupt themselves but the Church of God move on according to his purpose, For the Bible borely say the gate of hell can not / shall not prevail against the church!

Money corrupts every body the difference is only the amount

  • Comment number 12.

Yes, in my view money is corrupting churches
but I don’t think in any way it Should be a surprise for Christians and other nonbelievers because the bible let us to know that in the last days men will be lover of money and will put their interest above God’s words.

It is written that a rich man asked how he could be a follower of Jesus, and that Jesus replied for him to leave all of his riches behind and follow. The man could not leave his riches and went his way.

What is wrong with Churches or Church leaders swimming in wealth? Do you want for Pastors to go around begging. GOD the ALMIGHTY is the owner of wealth and do you expect his servants or sons to be poor? Even the members of the congregation if they obey are growing in wealth as well.

Corruption is at the heart of all Africa's problems .... just because its not a politician, but rather a 'religious' person, its still corruption. Many of these 'mega' churces that rely on getting 'donations' for salvation, are (much like many of the US versions), little more than con schemes. As usual, its the poor that pay for the priviliges of the few.

Are you suppose to be poor becuase you serve the creator of heaven and earth? Eccle. 5 vs 9, "Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field".
